They've been picked because the producers thought they'd make more entertaining viewing than the other applicants.

I thought it was terrible, Thatwaslulu, that he was playing that for laughs - were there any consequences for him? Did they get to re-submit the coursework? He should be ashamed of himself, not acting like a dick about it.
