Love Julie Walters, she was brilliant tonight.

It's lacking pace though; kept getting a bit bored and going on my phone instead (a good tv programme has me glued).

Also feel it's a bit style over substance.

Wingedharpy · 27/09/2016 22:22

I was bored with tonight's episode sadly.
My feelings are, based on nothing, is that he is possibly innocent of all charges BUT, he probably has sexually assaulted/abused his daughter.
JW's character came across as quite ruthless tonight, I felt.

southeastdweller · 27/09/2016 22:26

Didn't like the flashbacks tonight - they felt clunky and unnecessary.

JW was superb, especially in the scene with Andrea Riseborough in the bedroom.

Merrylegs · 27/09/2016 22:54

JW was good in that scene wasn't she? I mean I like Andrea's performance too but in that scene I really felt like she wanted to do a little aside to the camera 'look! Look how lucky am I to be in the same scene as her!' It felt like she was watching a masterclass.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/09/2016 23:44

I 'm hooked.

Hate to be a lone voice but I don't like JW's accent, finding it unconvincing and distracting.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 27/09/2016 23:57

Agree, JW's accent is all over the place, not convincing at all.

NoahVale · 28/09/2016 06:34

the policeut woman put the idea into daughter;s head. but i dont understand if he raped some women how they could put two and two together and say he raped his daughter Hmm

it isnt holding my attention either. but i do want to see it through.

The80sweregreat · 28/09/2016 07:12

its very 'arty' isn't it? JW is good, but her accent tends to wander. I think making her speak without an accent ( home counties) might have worked better ( considering she hasn't lived in Ireland for a long time)
the actor playing young Paul does look a bit like Robbie Coltrane!
having Victoria Derbyshire do the radio interview was good - made it a bit more real. Although I don't recall the ones that have been put in prison already ( Rolf harris, stuart hall) being allowed to do this? I would have thought the police would have advised against It somehow. I feel sad that Saville died before he was put in prison for his crimes - he really did get away with it. So sad for the victims.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/09/2016 07:20

Ireland? I thought it was meant to be a Scottish accent?

AlasEarwax · 28/09/2016 20:35

The80s I think Paul was advised not to do the radio interview but he went ahead and did it anyway because he thought it would help.

Did anyone pick up a weird vibe from Paul's friend when he was talking to Julie Walters in the kitchen? I suddenly shouted at the TV, it's HIM! I don't know where it came from. I just have a strange feeling that Paul's friend could have done these things instead.

Of course I could be talking out of my arse, I really have no evidence Hmm I think there will be a huge twist.

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2016 22:53

I think the friend too

notangelinajolie · 28/09/2016 23:00

Another vote for the 'friend'.

Wingedharpy · 29/09/2016 00:51

I think JW's accent is meant to be Scottish but it does meander into Irish because she does Irish better, thanks to her Mum. 😀

annandale · 29/09/2016 01:30

I was gripped. DH found it too disturbing, has said he doesn't want to watch it any more, so I'll be disturbed solo for the last episodes.

Asheth · 29/09/2016 09:17

I thought the friend was acting strangely as well. Even if it turns out that Paul attacked the other women, I think it will be the friend that abused the daughter.

AlasEarwax · 29/09/2016 09:48

Phew, I'm glad to see others agree about the friend (who I refer to as Percy as I love him in Blackadder Grin ). I thought it was just me that saw something weird there.

It could be something more simple though... There was some kind of odd chemistry between him and JW in the kitchen. Maybe they're having an affair.

Lottapianos · 29/09/2016 10:00

JW was so brilliant in the scene with Dee. I wanted to rewind it and watch it all over again as soon as it finished. I feel so sorry for Dee - it seems like she's been expected to be a 'good girl' and think about everyone else's feelings all her life, even at her own birthday party! Her mother offering her money to 'make him happy' at her own party was pretty sickening. I found the birthday song and his speech really inappropriate and quite chilling, no wonder she had to get out of there

I agree about JW's accent but the rest of her performance is so brilliant that I don't find it distracting

Friend was deeply sinister this week, and something very odd between him and JW in the kitchen

Its a really disturbing program, really gets under your skin. Absolutely no idea what he's guilty of at this point

CurrerBell · 29/09/2016 10:01

I struggled to follow it a bit last night (it is very good though). It got very surreal when Paul started chasing his younger self (I think?). I wasn't sure what happened at the end... was the crash real?!

I didn't like the way Paul was playfighting with his daughter and pulling her around in the flashback. Why did they leave her with a babysitter not much older than her? In that scene in the bedroom Marie was so unloving towards her daughter it took my breath away... She was more concerned with keeping up appearances (the party) than her daughter's wellbeing.

I am also watching the friend very closely...

mintthins · 29/09/2016 10:03

I found it very disturbing last night, especially that birthday song. I cannot imagine much less appropriate in the circumstances.

Lottapianos · 29/09/2016 10:08

I know mint! I really did shudder at that. Everyone but Dee was so invested in keeping up appearances. I thought it was really inappropriate to have a big party with loads of people when she was so unwell anyway, it just seemed like showing off, not celebrating her.

And then his speech, which was all about him and his terribly sad situation etc etc. He's a very unsettling character, as is his friend, and JW's character was so cold and scathing towards her very vulnerable and unwell daughter. She basically called her a liar and loser and a waste of space. Horrifying.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 29/09/2016 10:49

I picked up the friend vibe too, to me it came across as that he'd been up to exactly the same sort of things as Paul allegedly has and honestly believes neither of them has done anything wrong.

JW telling Dee she needs to be there for her Dad without any acknowledgement of her fears was chilling, and as for the birthday song, just awful, no wonder poor Dee has issues even if she hasn't been sexually abused.

AlasEarwax · 29/09/2016 17:39

Another reason I suspect the friend rather than Paul is the flashback showing Paul coming into his daughter's room. I'm pretty sure a lot of us saw him entering that room and instantly thought something sinister was going to happen. All he did was say something nice to her I can't remember what then pretty much tucked her in and said good night. Nothing at all sinister. If I remember correctly, we saw dee in the car after that scene. I think she was remembering that event for the first time and she suddenly realised he didn't do anything to her. But I do think her memory loss shows that something traumatic did happen. She just can't remember what...yet.

I'm good at rambling so I hope that makes some kind of sense. Confused
