A discussion thread for those of us with no self control at all, who have finished OITNB S4.

What was your favourite moment from the series?

What are you most looking forward to from season 5?

OP posts:
MissBattleaxe · 28/06/2016 08:17

The actress who played young Lolly was excellent. She had the physical nuances and everything.

I remember Lori Petty in Point Break and A League of Their Own. She was great in both. Stunning eyes.

Ifiwasabadger · 28/06/2016 10:03

Finished it last night. Was a little disappointed although very moved.

I thought it still had a lot of humour, others have said there was none. I laughed a lot.

I feel it has lost its edge a bit and is on a slow downhill spiral of negativity if it doesn't address some of the issues in the next series.

00100001 · 28/06/2016 10:20

it does all seem to be taking a darker turn inside the prison - more violent etc, especially as this is a minimum security prison.

MissBattleaxe · 29/06/2016 16:12

I finished it last night at 1am.

I HATED Piscatella by the end. I loved that Fig had given Caputo some dirt on him to get him to go home. I just hope he gets discredited and permanently sacked. It wasn't clear if he would come back, but it was clear Caputo had the upper hand by the end.

I hadn't realised how little Poussey was. A couple of times they said she was 92 pounds. that's 6.5 stone! In the NYC flashback scenes, you could see how tiny she was.

I agree with ifiwasabdger. they really need some light after all this shade. It was tough going at times, which you expect with a prison drama, but it was gruelling in places.

Some highlights for me were:

Norma singing to poor SoSo,
Seeing Morello really lose it- that was only ever alluded to in previous seasons, but we saw her dark side at her worst.
Seeing Taystee really shine
Seeing Piscatella get blackmailed by Caputo.
Watching Piper go full circle from badass to humble.
Any scene with Red in
Lori Petty
All the acting. Without exception.

TobleroneBoo · 29/06/2016 16:53

Having finished series 4, I have just started re-watching series one. I forgot how scary red was and how crazy crazy eyes actually was at the start.

00100001 · 29/06/2016 16:55

Red is the BEST

NowWhat1983 · 30/06/2016 14:06

Haven't read the thread so apologies if it's been said.

I originally felt sorry for Lolly at them all abandoning her and her taking the full blame for the killing.

But then again she did rush in and stomp him multiple times on the neck and then happily ask Alex if she is going to the lake.

Then in season 3 she stalked Alex for a while, looking in her bunk, keeping a diary of her movements and then keeping a large shard of glass and attacking alex with it.

Lolly was actually dangerous and psych was where she belonged.

BifsWif · 01/07/2016 22:57

Just finished it and I am in bits. My favourite series so far. I loved poussey. Sad

The writers did a good job addressing the recent stories in America and black people being killed by law enforcement. Really well done.

VelvetSpoon · 01/07/2016 23:27

Just starting the final episode of the series. Have tried not to read too much of the thread.

Am feeling heartbroken about Poussey Sad. Not sure a TV death has ever made me feel quite this sad. She was my favourite character. I didn't see it coming, stupidly I thought their protest was actually going to work and get rid of that arsehole guard.

NKFell · 02/07/2016 21:13

I'm going to watch from season 1 again.

Love Red
Hate Piper
Poussey dying is heartbreaking!

HeyMacWey · 03/07/2016 09:56

Just finished :o

A dark, chilling season that appears to be reflecting what's happening outside the prison walls in wider American society.

Desperately sad, interjected with dark humor and pure horror. Piper's branding made me take a break for a day to fully absorb it. Amazingly directed - you could feel the tension and her fear through the screen.

The threesome was brilliant - pure dark comedy.

May have to rematch series 1-3.

TobleroneBoo · 05/07/2016 17:40

It's interesting how everyone loved Poussey and Taystee in series 4, but in series 2 Taystee was really horrible to Poussey! It was because of Vee but still, glad she went

Brekekekex · 06/07/2016 07:22

I love how the writers contrasted the treatment of Bayley and Poussey - both caught trespassing and in possession of a small amount of pot. Dumb, directionless white kid gets let off with a laugh, smart, full-of-potential black kid gets sent to prison.

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 06/07/2016 07:29

Oh man you're right, I hadn't spotted that. They were a similar age and the same crime. They even showed them both partying in New York at the same time to draw more parallel between them.

MissBattleaxe · 06/07/2016 08:00

Brek- you're so right- they did the same crime and had wildly contrasting treatment. Good spot.

Poussey was from a respectable family- and a lot of people, including SoSo and Judy king, were all too ready to assume she was born in the ghetto.

White boy trespasses and smokes pot and the police play a joke on them and say "boys will be boys."

Scarydinosaurs · 06/07/2016 09:35

Yes brek excellent compare and contrast with Bailey and Poussey.

TheUnsullied · 08/07/2016 00:24

Seasons 2 and 3 were so tepid that I hadn't actually planned on watching 4 but they've really upped their game so I'm glad I did. It needed the darkness. I've always applauded the fact that they keep it very real, even down to being one of the few programs to show all body shapes in a confident way, but you can't keep that level of realism and not offset the comedy with the real aspects and issues of prison life.

Lolly definitely needs to be in psych, albeit a nicer version if possible. She's not stable enough to be in with the rest of the prison population. I think that realisation has broken Healey...couldn't help his mum, couldn't help Lolly either. It's dragged up a lot he thought he'd dealt with.

I think next season is when Sophia's story really gets some swing...in the aftermath of Poussey's death, someone will hilight her experience with the conditions in the prison to the press. Probably her wife.

Hating Nicki in this season. She's gone from being a bit of a cow sometimes to outright sexual assault. And the storyline with Dogget and the guard is upsetting me too. I know that people do forgive these things but it's a hard and upsetting line for me nowadays.

Agreed about the comparisons drawn between Poussey and Bayley. That really stood out to me too.

Caputo infuriated me in the last 2 episodes. He wants to do right by the women, I've always gotten that from the character. But he won't properly stick his neck out to do the right thing. Piscatella should have been fired when he started telling Caputo what he was going to do. He had plenty of reason. And he should have called the police immediately when he realised it hadn't already been done, not checked it was alright. He's lacked the backbone to really do good for ages now (letting the women be fed slop, not insisting on books, guard training, etc) but I was really hoping he'd stand up when it was really necessary, and not just to save the neck of an unfortunate white man while failing to focus on the black woman who died.

Daya. She's rebelling but I really wouldn't put pulling the trigger past her. Even if it's just to hit back at an attempt from Gloria to stop her. She's always struck me as really immature and easily led.

Morello/Muchio should probably take a little trip to psych too. She's completely harmless until her jealousy takes over but then she gets abusive and delusional.

Weirdly, I couldn't give two shits about Piper or Alex this season. I admittedly have never liked Piper but Alex used to intrigue me at least. Now their screen time bores me.

NowWhat1983 · 08/07/2016 10:59

I didn't find season 2 tepid.

Beginning with Piper being flown away to a max prison and we didnt know why.

Then the story arc in 2 was Vee. Culminating in Poussey having the living shit beaten out of her by Crazy Eyes for standing up to Vee...that was horrible to watch.

Season 3 was very tepid but now I think it has gone too far. EVERY single guard being nasty and treating the women like dirt. Really? There are surely some who treat it like the job that it is and just dont get so personally involved.

NowWhat1983 · 08/07/2016 11:11

Also now that Cesar has got 10 years for his crimes, why on earth hasnt anyone spoken up.

Aleida and Daya took fall for him. Now Aleida got out for good behaviour. I dont see Daya getting in trouble in the first 3 series. Shes always at work, doesn't fight with other inmates. She got "raped" by a prison guard.
I dont get why she doesnt come out and say i took the heat for Cesar ive been a model inmate , I had a baby, etc.

Poussey too. Well liked. Works hard in the library. No one knows about the hooch so that wouldn't count against her.

Possesion of barely half an ounce and she has 6 years of a sentence. She should have been eligible for early release.

The time is so slow moving. Daya got.knocked up in series 1 and gave birth at the end of season 3.

TheUnsullied · 08/07/2016 11:14

I think they've been quite diverse with the ways in which the guards are a danger to the women actually and wouldn't say they're all nasty. Yes, there's the sadist (Humps?) who's been getting them to fight, eat mice etc. And there's Piscatella who's strict, militant and pack minded. But Bayley's only negligence really is his lack of training and subservience. Luschek isn't cruel, just essentially self serving. Healey is a bit unhinged, sexist, homophobic and racist but he does believe he's acting in the women's interests most of the time. Many of the other guards, including the woman vet, are just failing to step up and stop what they suspect/know is going on. It's a poor state of affairs but it goes to highlight how poor a decision it was to not put a bit of money into finding and training high quality guards instead of hiring vets and kids barely out of school and paying them all a pittance.

TheDropBear · 08/07/2016 11:45

Some of the guards weren't being directly nasty to the inmates but were letting the treatment continue by being passive and not speaking up. I can definitely believe that would happen. Plus I think the situation was made worse by lots of the new guards being ex army. There was a real brotherhood thing going on. And you can totally imagine MCG not doing thorough enough psych evaluations. I thought the guard stuff was great, very Stanford prison experiment.

So sick of Piper now, she's either annoying or boring. Spent the first half of the season hoping they would kill her off.

Really liked Freida this season. Possibly one of the most dangerous in there but find her so funny.

Has anyone watched Weeds? Same creator and it's on Netflix so considering giving it a go.

Andylion · 08/07/2016 18:16

Ok I'm late to the party but I've just finished S4.

What an amazing programme!

So, what do we think will happen?

Will Diaz shoot?
What will Judy King do?
How will Healey's story end?
Will Alex go completely bonkers?

I can't believe I've got to wait 11 months!
