A discussion thread for those of us with no self control at all, who have finished OITNB S4.

What was your favourite moment from the series?

What are you most looking forward to from season 5?

OP posts:
AndYourBirdCanSing · 22/06/2016 20:03

Agree with whoever said about Nicky's behaviour with Lorna- awful and predatory. She makes my skin crawl.

MissBattleaxe · 22/06/2016 20:09

Lorna is one of my favourite characters. A hopelessly romantic bunny boiler.

honeysucklejasmine · 22/06/2016 20:11

Sorry MissBattleaxe Blush

Yes! Nicky perving on Lorna was straight up sexual harassment.

OP posts:
gaggiagirl · 22/06/2016 21:51

That threesome. Urgh luschek is VILE

Scarydinosaurs · 22/06/2016 22:16

Nicky was dreadful! And she is one of my favourites. An attempt to show how much drug withdrawal got to her??

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 22/06/2016 22:44

Nicky is an addict. I think the Lorna stuff was to show that she's addicted to sex/attention and will go after it as aggressively as she goes after drugs.

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/06/2016 22:47

I stayed away from the thread until I'd watched the whole of S4, as I wanted to avoid spoilers. I managed to make 13 episodes last six days, so quite proud of my self-control!

These are my first thoughts, and then I'll go back and read the thread...

There are too many large white male bearded guards. It's starting to get slightly confusing. However, I love watching any scene with Piscatella, especially when he is asked to demonstrate 'soft skills' e.g. facilitating an ice-breaker session.

That new guard Humphrey is a bit worrying; I wonder how high he'd score in those online 'Am I a psychopath?' quizzes.

The dead body plot was jumping the shark and I was getting a bit concerned that the show might have run its course. The storywriters seemed desperate enough that I was almost expecting Whitehill's time machine to actually work. But then episode 11 (People Persons) was amazing; the one with Suzanne's backstory and the overnight lockdown. Piscatella vs Red was very watchable, and I found the end (the transfer to the psychiatric unit) very moving.

As for the ending, not all of the little slips of paper were burned before the bin was kicked over, so the name written on them might surface next season.

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/06/2016 23:31

I found it quite poignant that Poussey & Bayley walked past each other on the street in her flashback. Two young people out having fun, with no idea of how their lives would collide in the future...

MassiveStrumpet · 22/06/2016 23:36

I didn't see that! Or if I did I've forgotten it somehow.

Bollard · 23/06/2016 08:23

I'm regretting bingeing on OITNB! Heartbreaking about Poussey, such a lovely character. I loved her courage in standing up to Vee in Season 2, and loved her friendship with Taystee. The scene where she realises that Brooke doesn't see past the colour of her skin is beautifully acted. I'm really miss her.

I wasn't sure about Pensatucky's story arc. She seems to be an entirely different character to the bigotted meth-head we met in Season 1. Not just a character who has changed and developed, but been re-written. Still haven't decided about her. Love her friendship with Boo.

Suzanne's back story was so terribly sad. She's a wonderful character.

I enjoy the backstories and I think that the writers pitch it beautifully, just giving us enough information to get an idea without labouring the point.

Did anyone else notice the Mooncup-a -likey sellers/stand promoting reusable menstruation cups for use in prisons at the conference Caputo went to?

I thought of MN Grin

NKFell · 23/06/2016 15:42

Watched Piper smoke crack last night Shock

Yes, Pensatucky has COMPLETELY changed.

Scarydinosaurs · 23/06/2016 15:44

boll I like the way they developed her, it was really interesting to see her backstory too.

MissBattleaxe · 23/06/2016 15:45

HisName- YES! and I thought of Mumsnet too. They'd be a great idea in prisons.

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 23/06/2016 16:28

Pensatucky changed but at the same time it wasn't rewriting a character completely differently, it was a clear development/maturation and seeing things differently. She had terrible parenting. It was almost like Boo was raising her again.

MissBattleaxe · 23/06/2016 16:35

I agree LadyStark. Pennsatuckiy has grown.

Also Piper has changed dramatically, but it's been a natural story arc.

ThatsMyStapler · 23/06/2016 20:48

oh thats sooo sad... just watched the last 2 episodes

I welled up

Bollard · 23/06/2016 20:54

Ladystarck that's interesting. Yes, that explains a lot about how Pensatucky has developed and how Boo reacts to the rape.
I loved Piper being such a crappy gangsta "with an A"! She got a brutal comeuppance didn't she.
Morello seems like someone better off in prison than in the real world. She's so warm and sweet but then descends into scary bunny boiler.

PinkyofPie · 24/06/2016 01:33

NRTFT as I've only just watched the penultimate episode. The show is definitely back on form after a mediocre series 3. I'm in tears at the treatment of the inmates and at Poussey. I've actually found it very difficult to watch, but that's what makes it so wonderful. Will miss it for another year.

00100001 · 24/06/2016 22:17

disappointed about Sophia's return :( so much build up and then... nada

CherryPicking · 25/06/2016 10:20

Just finished this season. Cried my heart out when Poussey died. What a beautiful human being, and what an awful way to go. And where are the fucking police?! It's just all so unjust! Angry

redexpat · 25/06/2016 23:09

Surely the whole point was that Piper was a rubbish gangsta? I think the actress played Piper acting badly brilliantly, if you follow that v unclear sentence.

I think the actress playing Suzanne is superb.

So many loose ends. Healey, the nun, omg is Judy king going to get hurt in the crossfire when she has "already been Released?" The papers with the dead man's name on them. Why would you try and burn the inside? Rip them up and flush down the loo.

starry0ne · 25/06/2016 23:20

It took me till Monday afternoon to watch the series..I loved it..I lughed so much and cried so much when poussey died.. I had seen it on another thread before MN deleted it ..But it didn't stop me sobbing..
Daya's mum is going to come back in.. she is happier on the inside.

I agree whoever said Sophia's return was a bit of a let down.

tribpot · 25/06/2016 23:34

Does anyone know where on earth Laverne Cox was whilst the show was being filmed? I assume they wrote her out because she was unavailable. I can't see anything on IMDB that would explain the absence.

Scarydinosaurs · 26/06/2016 07:33

I agree red Piper was superb in those scenes. Just the right mixture of bling arrogance and cringe.

Sophia's return may have been anticlimactic, but the way they broke her out was superb.

Daya's mum will commit a crime to rejoin Daya in prison when she inevitably gets sent to max following the gun incident??
