A discussion thread for those of us with no self control at all, who have finished OITNB S4.

What was your favourite moment from the series?

What are you most looking forward to from season 5?

There was some criticism of last season, that not much happened. They really made up for it with this season!

The guards of this season were horrific. Because we saw bits and pieces of the former guards throughout the show I assumed that Caputo would eventually call them in to save the day... Sad

I half want Daya to kill that piece of shit, but that would mean she'd be stuck behind bars forever - and I suppose Bennett isn't going to make an appearance and take care of their child.

honeysucklejasmine · 19/06/2016 02:50

God, yes. Bennet! We still don't know what happened there.

"Humps" is an absolute monster. He would deserve it if Daya did kill him, but I also would be sad to see her throw her life away.

We'd covered a lot of Suzanne's back story but not her actual crime until now. Same for a lot of them. Like Cindy... if I recall, we can guess it's prob theft that landed her in there, but we haven't actually had that confirmed.

I think Danielle Brookes, who plays Taystee, was incredible this season. Top notch acting.

I can't get the NY scenes out of my head. Her joy, and wonder... poor Poussey.

I think Benett asked for too much cash. It was a low budget show at that point.

honeysucklejasmine · 19/06/2016 07:18

He's on "How to get away with murder" now instead.

I had some strange dreams last night.

I know it's not real but I feel sad about poussey. She was defending Suzanne who beat her up in the last series. Of all the characters I think she was the least antagonistic it really made me think.

motheroreily · 19/06/2016 07:35

And healey in psych. Shock

MassiveStrumpet · 19/06/2016 08:49

This season was just so dark. The Neo Nazi stuff was just so disturbing and I had to stop watching for a day when Piper was getting branded because that was just so WTF.

The last two seasons had happier final scenes. Even though we thought Voss was done for the emphasis was on the joy in the lake. And the previous season Vee getting taken out by the cancer lady.

I really cared about Diaz and waiting a year to see what happens to her will be so hard.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 19/06/2016 09:49

It was very dark this season. It's set up that next season might be darker still. After the riot the gangs will still be there, and the guards will be worse (unless they get rid and bring back the old ones).

I laughed when the phone fell out of the nun, and the dodgy threesome was funny too though.

MissBattleaxe · 19/06/2016 15:32

The strength of S1, which I consider the best, was that the heavy was interjected with shots of humour.

There were some light moments ( albeit grisly) in the first few eps of S4, but now I'm on ep4, the darkness is a bit relentless.

LaBelleOtero · 19/06/2016 18:21

They tried going lighter last season, with the dirty underwear scam, the love stories, and the daft cult storyline and it wasn't really well received.

Did anyone notice that they borrowed from Bad Girls for a scene - stuffing toilet paper in someone's mouth to kill them? It could be a coincidence, but I wouldn't be surprised if writers of a prison drama watch other prison dramas for ideas after a certain point.

Caputo turned out to be borderline incompetent (a very irritating scene was watching him walk past a menstrual cup stand at the prison convention with no interest when we know some inmates had to resort to dangerous methods for sanitary protection, like leaving a tampon in all day) and the guards were sadistic, and aside from the female guard the only non-sadistic one managed to murder an inmate. I get the impression they'll all still be installed next season, so things will be very tense

MissBattleaxe · 19/06/2016 19:00

The season I didn;t like was S2. I think Vee over dominated it all.

honeysucklejasmine · 19/06/2016 20:06

Ah yes, Sister really needs to work on her pelvic floor.

Soooo glad that Caputo helped Danny though. I was getting super annoyed with him for being so incompetent and spineless.

Fuck
Fuck fuck fuck
Poussay :(
I'm so sad. Truly devastated about poussay and disturbed by the whole darkness of the series. This series has been bloody good but so dark.
I enjoyed the Vee storyline in series 2, less keen on the humour of series 3 but this one could have lightened up a little.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 19/06/2016 20:31

She was a great character. I'll miss her in the next series. I warmed a bit more to her girlfriend this series, couldn't stand her in series 3.

minatiae · 19/06/2016 21:36

I think she was known to be a huge favourite, I suppose it's brave of the writers to kill someone so popular off and especially one that's probably the least harmful person in the prison. Highlights injustice in the system. But still, So sad. I haven't been this sad about a TV show since they killed off CJ's boyfriend in the West Wing.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 19/06/2016 21:43

I wished they had killed off piper Grin

WanHeda · 19/06/2016 22:21

Holy shit this season was dark. Poussey was one of my faves! As was Nicky, but she seems to be just a bitch now. Sophia looks haunted. The nun is still in the shu. Lolly didnt actually kill the guy, her being carted off to psych broke my heart. Donuts guy is still a fucking rapist and its only a matter of time til he does it again. SO many injustices, at every turn. It was a difficult watch.

WanHeda · 19/06/2016 22:22

Yeah, I could not care less about Piper, she is a whining cowbag.

honeysucklejasmine · 19/06/2016 22:48

Lolly's back story was really interesting. The actress they got to play young Lolly absolutely nailed the voice.

Stuckey is fast becoming one of my favourites. Compared to season 1, she's a totally different person!

OP posts:
ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 19/06/2016 23:08

Wasn't in the same actress?

She was one of my favourites this season, hopefully she comes back again.

Quite a few of the ones I disliked in the first couple of seasons are my favourites now.

Wasn't sure what to make of the famous cook woman (I'm rubbish with names) I didn't warm to her but she had some funny moments.

ArrestedDevelopment · 20/06/2016 00:02

I know it's a TV show but 2 things really were unbelievable this series

  1. why didn't no one notice a guard (fake guard/hitman) was missing?
  2. pipers 'gangsta' moments were cringeworthy. Would she really be that stupid?

Other than that loved the series. Poussey was one of my favourites. What did she do to go in prison? Have I missed that flashback?

I really love the friendships between the ladies
Sophia and the sister
Pentucky and boo
Poussey looking out for Suzanne

minatiae · 20/06/2016 00:30

I do love what they've done with Pennsatucky. I like that she is still a Christian and goes to her Bible for things without being the fire and brimstone bible bashing type she was in season 1. And that she's friends with Boo. It's nice to see the good side of Christianity and the way Christians should be acting shown that way especially from a character who got it all so wrong early on.

tribpot · 20/06/2016 00:47

My favourite character too - I can understand why the actor wanted to do something different after four seasons in prison.

I think the fake guard wasn't actually there officially, he'd slipped in dressed as a guard. How else could they not have noticed how he didn't clock off at the end of the shift? I do think they still might have wondered how a guard had apparently been murdered without anyone noticing when his body was discovered.

Why so little of Sophia, though? I wonder if Laverne Cox wasn't available.

Very glad that Nicky was back - she is great.

Overall it really was very dark, and you could see how the violence is set to spiral. I really thought Taystee was going to bust in to the press conference to set the record straight. I don't understand why Caputo is still complying with the Overlords, esp with the threat of another x00 inmates in the near future.

SoThatHappened · 20/06/2016 02:04

You know I watched loads of this whilst half asleep in the wee hours.

I was semi asleep through an episode or two.

I was thinking what a weird ass dream I had that Red finished off branding Piper. Until I watched it again.

Daya disappointed me. She was the one pulling her mothers ass into shape and telling her she had been a bad and irresponsible mother.
But hr first steps in motherhood are to act like a teenager as soon as she is alone in prison and not think for a single second about her child being without her for life if she gets caught up in prison gang activity,

SoThatHappened · 20/06/2016 02:07

Pousseys reason for being in prison was discussed by the MCC guys.
She was trespassing and in possession of less than an ounce of soft drugs.

This is where it lost all credibility. Aleida gets out early for being a model prisoner when she covered up for her bf and was running a heroin factory out of her flat but Poussey was never ever assessed or released early when she was undoubtedly a model prisoner and in prison on such a minor crime.
