I thought it was a great episode. Poor asha. She really tried didn't she - I think sadly that indicates that the umbers gave rickon in good faith, otherwise there would have been a better plan than 'try to shag Ramsay and stab him at the same time' - I think that was just her desperation and spirit trying to take him down with her before she was killed.

Oh yes sorry she's osha- asha is yara in the book.

pyrowall · 16/05/2016 09:16

JonSnowsBeard - forgive me it was 5.30 when I was watching it after a sleepless night!

ElspethFlashman · 16/05/2016 09:34

The AV Club review had a great point:

"Danaerys knows how to conquer - Tyrion knows how to rule"

They need each other cos just one or the other doesnt work. DREAM TEAM!

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 16/05/2016 09:37

Finally Dany did something! Though the lack of screaming was a bit of a washout.
And yay to Jon and Sansa being reunited!

ElspethFlashman · 16/05/2016 09:37

Loved the way Thormund was appreciatively sizing up Brienne. Who seems to have gotten even heftier if possible - why does she look plump? I'm pretty sure thats not how she looks in real life. I was wondering where she got all that food on her endless trek North!

I know Theon wont have a big part to play in the coming storyline as he's not fit for much - but he's still the character that affects me the most. I almost got teary eyed when Yara was shouting at him! Leave him alone! Angry

ElspethFlashman · 16/05/2016 09:41

My predictions: Margery is going to pretend to be converted and be a good little Septa.

And she'll be so good at it we'll all be wondering if its real.

But then.....BAM! She'll stab the High Sparrow!

Btw, the High Sparrow may be the character I hate most right now. But Jonathan Pryce is fantastic. That tight shot on his face as he was telling his story........he never blinked once.

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 16/05/2016 11:20

Brienne looked larger around the middle, either bulky clothes to de feminise her appearance or maybe the actress is pregnant?
I wonder if tyrion and daenarys might get married and name Jon as their heir - since daenarys can't have children and probably tyrion might not want to anyway for fear of passing on dwarfism (I have actually no idea whether it is hereditary but tyrion may believe it is regardless)
They are a good match politically and intellectually. It would unite the targaryans, the Lannister faction and the stark faction. Sansa will rule winterfell and be an honoured Royal sister type person, arya will die (after achieving something totally badass) bran will be a tree person and rickon I have no idea about.

ElspethFlashman · 16/05/2016 12:16

In real life its a 50/50chance depending on who you take after. Peter Dinklage is married to an average sized person and their daughter is average sized after her mother. But this is fantasy, so the normal rules may not apply!

I think Rickon is toast. His character isnt developed enough to be anything other than a painful sacrifice.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 16/05/2016 12:57

I thought it was an excellent episode for this stage in the series; it wasn’t a knock out OMG episode all the way through like we’ve with some others, but it’s setting everything up nicely to go forward. It did have quite the badass ending with Dany taking the khals out – I’m glad she did it herself (with presumably a little help from Jorah and Dario) rather than Drogon sweeping in to save her again.

I had something in my eye when Jon and Sansa reunited, and Margaery and Loras for that matter. Genuinely emotional moments. Margaery is going to do whatever it takes to get them out of there and the 7 Gods will be of no use to the High Sparrow against the might of her and Lady Olenna Grin

I loved the bit where Jon read the letter and Sansa was the driving force behind going back to Winterfell. She’s one of my favourites as she has been taught how to play the game by the best and now she’s playing it. The girl has real steel beneath the silk. That letter is apparently in the books but it’s delivered to Jon before he dies and it’s what makes him want to leave The Wall, leading to the Brothers stabbing him. I liked that they brought it in to the show, albeit in a different way. Presumably Littlefinger’s army is going to join up with Jon’s, seeing as LF is on his way to Winterfell anyway.

I also loved Thormund’s O-O at Breinne; you could almost hear him thinking ‘What a woman!’. Interestingly Brienne confirms she killed Stannis here, but I still don’t believe it for some reason. I’m firmly in the camp of never believe they’re dead until you see the body and, seeing as we’ve seen the deaths of the other Baraetheon men (Renly, Robert, Joffrey), it’s really odd they’re not showing us Stannis. Davos is almost at the point where he’s found out about Shireen and I wonder what he’ll do. He’s a practical, cool customer, but will this be a step too far?

I'd already written Osha off as a dead woman walking tbh. Fair play to her for having a go at killing Ramsey, though, feisty to the end. You know you're watching GOT when you think 'Oh thank the gods she's just bleeding to death and not being flayed alive'!

TheNorthRemembers · 16/05/2016 13:03

I can't wait to see it.

ZacharyQuack · 16/05/2016 13:15

Rickon's in great danger from both Ramsay and Littlefinger. Aside from Ramsay's great love of torturing, both men want Sansa as their bride (I'm assuming Littlefinger is planning on Ramsay's death in the war) as she is heir to Winterfell and her husband will rule the north. But if Rickon is alive, then he's the heir, not Sansa. And it'll be harder to marry and control a male heir.

ElspethFlashman · 16/05/2016 13:18

Davos might end up killing Melisandre over Shireen. I'm not sure what use she is anymore now she's brought back Jon anyway.

WestleyAndButtockUp · 16/05/2016 13:20

I wonder how you get an annulment of a marriage in Westeros?

Littlefinger seemed to state that because Sansa was a virgin (Tyrion never slept with her), her marriage to Tyrion Lannister was invalid.

If now-non-virgin Sansa wanted to get married again while Ramsay was still alive, how would she do that? Maesters?

Sansa and Tyrion got married in a new-gods ceremony (The Seven), right? Do the Faith Militant run that, thoughout the whole of Westeros?

And Sansa and Ramsay got married in an old-gods ceremony, didn't they? Who's in charge of that? Three-eyed Raven?

WestleyAndButtockUp · 16/05/2016 13:30

I suppose it's all just like the real world - a legal marriage is supported by the state, and whatever religious ceremony you want to conduct it under is separate.

No matter what religion they did it under, Warden of the North Bolton is sworn to support the state run from King's Landing.

emilybohemia · 16/05/2016 13:31

Thormund likes Brienne, love it.

Poor Osha.

When they were discussing the troops and how many wildlings they had, I was thinking, but you have a giant!

looking forward to Ramsay getting moidered.

So Dany is kind of a like a flame proof goddess now, hope the story speeds up now.

Did anyone see 'Greyworm' on Graham Norton? He has an album out.

TheNorthRemembers · 16/05/2016 13:45

Westley Marriages in Westeros can be annulled by the High Septon, e.g. Tyrion 's marriage to Tysha was annulled.

Not being consummated is not really a legal reason in Westeros. Even Roose admitted Santa's marriage to Tyrion was valid, when he said to Ramsay that he went into open rebellion with the Crown to secure Sansa Stark and the North for him.

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 16/05/2016 13:46

Jon has 2000 wildlings and a giant but how many will the eyrie supply? Also there is the neck and the crannogmen, they don't usually go to war but they might for the right cause. There must be other northern houses apart from the umbers and karstarks. Are the Frey bannermen fighting for the boltons?

ElspethFlashman · 16/05/2016 13:53

Yeah, in the books (which have ended now so god knows if these events are going to be in the next book or not) Littlefinger didn't even suggest an annulment as only the High Septon could do it and since the new one was this High Sparrow bloke it was not bloody likely since Sansa was strongly rumoured to have been aware of the plot to kill the King, and her husband was actually convicted of it!

Lots of sins there!

Also it couldn't be done by post anyway! You can't just write "We never shagged. Annulment please! Thx"

WestleyAndButtockUp · 16/05/2016 13:56

So, either the High Septon HAS annulled her first marriage to Tyrion.

Or she's married to two different blokes?

ElspethFlashman · 16/05/2016 14:03

I think it's a bit more likely LF lied in the hope Tyrion wouldn't survive whatever hole he was hiding in, as he's on the run from the law so to speak. There's a bounty on his head for Joffreys death.

Whereas it was more expedient to get a bit of control of the North, get Sansa knocked up with a Northern wonder child, and worry about the petty details like a pre-existing marriage afterwards.

It makes more sense to me than this High Sparrow oh so helpfully annulling it by post!

But then who knows what the producers want us to believe.

Next week Sansa meets LF again and asks him some uncomfortable questions which I'm looking forward to, but I don't think he'll be inclined to be truthful. Not his style.

One things for sure, the whole annulment thing was glossed over far too quickly for any viewer satisfaction.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 16/05/2016 15:42

Marking my place.

MagratsFlyawayHair · 16/05/2016 16:26

I really enjoyed last night. Sansa meeting Jon laid foundations for some good stuff to come. And goodness knows What Cersei has up her sleeve.

I like the Dany bit. She's free of running s country with buildings that ties her down and has an army of experienced warriors now if she can retain command of all the Dothraki. I found it an interesting development.

CaroleService · 16/05/2016 16:27

I reckon Ramsay will display Rickon to the Jon/Sansa armies and demand that Sansa return, and if she does he'll give Rickon up (which he wouldn't).

Sansa will refuse and Rickon will get it ...

I'm trying to recall, the prophecy about Daenerys and children - thinking maybe the solution is that her son didn't die after all??
