At the end of Book 5 Stannis is still alive and Davos is sent to rally troops.
A bargain is struck with the Northern houses that if Davos can find Rickon and the direwolf as proof they will lend Stannis their support. So.... Davos' whole storyline for Book 6 is : The Onion Knight And The Search For Shaggy Dog.

I imagine in this case it will be the same but Jon Snow sending Davos on the mission not Stannis.

Rickon is supposedly on Skagos, a scary island no-one ever goes to what has unicorns n shit. Hope we see the unicorns.
