Just saw we were dangerously close to filling the last thread so have taken the liberty as starting this one.

Ah yes, Christopher Plummer as the Captain does things to me too.

Ida - Those pictures are amazing! He looks better out of his dog collar!

I was in hospital a lot as a kid met nurses usually ward sisters like nurse crane no nonsense but lovely

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 06/03/2016 10:01

I think if it's SMJ it would be a cop out. Too obvious.

Isn't Nurse Crane in the picture? Thought it was her in the right corner with her back against the lamp post.

MrsJayy · 06/03/2016 10:03

Maybe fred or mrs fred they are big in the community and have a huge proper funeral

ppeatfruit · 06/03/2016 11:00

Alfie I haven't read the books yet would you recommend them? Is there any order to them? (thanks for your background knowledge btw Flowers) Grin

MrsJayy · 06/03/2016 11:36

Get the books they are really good yes there is an order but you can buy the set

ppeatfruit · 06/03/2016 12:15

Thanks Mrs Jayy I will get the set, will they make me cry more than the telly or less ? Grin

NeedACleverNN · 06/03/2016 12:17

The books made me cry...

Especially the story of the lady who was in the workhouse and her children died and the brother and sister who were in the workhouse. The brother died of cancer and the sister committed suicide if you can remember from the program

DiscordiaVanDiemen · 06/03/2016 12:59

Need That episode with the brother and sister upset me so much I was welling up for days afterwards. I so wanted them to be together and have a happy ending.

When I read the books and recognised their story in one of them (with all the background about their childhood) I couldn't continue to read it at all, I had to abandon it. The same book had the story about the elderly man that had the insects (cockroaches?) in his flat. I'm miserable now thinking of it.
I wish I'd never opened the book to be honest, both those stories will haunt me forever…Sad

Alfieisnoisy · 06/03/2016 13:15

I definitely recommend the books. :-)

OldCrowMedicineShow · 06/03/2016 13:30

I like to think that Nurse Crane would be one of those formidable women who still drive their Morris Minor and glare stonily over their glasses at rudeness in supermarkets. Women like Nurse Crane are bomb proof.

I hope the bereavement tonight is not a gory one and wish they hadn't scripted it in at all as we will all howl for days.

ppeatfruit · 06/03/2016 13:49

Oh yes the elderly brother and sister that was a sad story Sad Thanks everyone I'm now in 2 minds about the books!

DiscordiaVanDiemen · 06/03/2016 14:22

ppeatfruit The books ARE good, it's just that some of the incidents are so distressing that they stay with you long after reading about them 😥

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 06/03/2016 14:28

I reckon it is SMJ. They've made her likeable this series...

AnneEyhtMeyer · 06/03/2016 14:36

The books are amazing, and a lot less sanitised than the TV version.

MrsJayy · 06/03/2016 14:36

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 06/03/2016 14:53

What was The Child Migrant Scheme?

Watching an old episode, three children have been sent to Oz as part of it.

I don't really have patience today to read Wikipaedia pages (not taken my meds as I needed to get stuff done) but would like to know the basics...

NeedACleverNN · 06/03/2016 14:55

Too many children in homes and were then sent to oz to make room in the U.K.

They were promised sunshine and a good life but were treated like slaves instead and were expected to work heavily for their keep. Which was poor in itself anyway

IdaJones · 06/03/2016 15:00

The children were told they would have new families in oz, but when they got there they were used as slave labour and abused and didn't have proper education. There's a good film about it called Oranges and Sunshine.

Lj8893 · 06/03/2016 15:28

Not Tom and Barbara getting married tonight, I've seen a photo of the wedding and Tom is there as the vicar.

NeedACleverNN · 06/03/2016 15:39

No it's a random family and looks like the bride has an unexpected surprise.

Me too.

Is it somewhat unsavoury? Does Sister Judgypants have 'a past'?

Woodhill · 06/03/2016 16:11

I read the first book and it was excellent. not too upsetting but not a light read itms.
