Anyone watching? All British actors appearing here...

OP posts:
LovePGtipsMonkey · 03/02/2016 13:43

yes, Kitty, the Napoleon actor is the master or subtle but clear expression. I loved the very first appearance with a silent/subtle smug smirk. He also conveys power and mania when he speaks, somehow.
Thanks, Cee.

Comtess · 03/02/2016 18:16

Totally agree with carobos Tom Burke as Dolokhov steals the show for me. He's just terrific in the part, pathos and passion.

Also loved Kitty's conment about Pierre as owl Grin.

Agree with Obs it's a fantastic production.

KurriKurri · 03/02/2016 18:37

Oh yes Tom Burke is wonderful. The casting I think is by and large brilliant.

Comtess · 03/02/2016 18:45

Yes I agree Kurri - the guy who is Denisov is also superb.

LovePGtipsMonkey · 03/02/2016 19:12

Dolokhov/Burke comes through as the most 'Russian' of the male characters, for sure! Well, also Broadbent.

Paul Dano is very talented, though Pierre in the book is nothing like as expressive facially. He's a bit of a grump there but yes, a kind genuine soul (as with Paul's version).

MamaMary · 03/02/2016 20:15

I think one thing the series has missed is the comparison between Pierre's ineffectual attempts to make life better for his serfs and Andrei's quieter but more effective actions. It seems a bit odd as that's a theme running through the book but I suppose not as exciting as the bits they have chosen.

I'd love to hear more about this. I'm a huge fan of Russian history.

KittyWindbag · 04/02/2016 04:01

lovepg agree about Dolokhov seeming the most Russian! I remember seeing that actor when he was very young in the bbc3 Casanova series. He has really come into his own and blossomed as an actor. I love Dolokhov.

Angelto5 · 04/02/2016 12:52

Was just checking out Tom Burke on IMDb & it says his God-father was the late ,great Alan Rickman!

Comtess · 04/02/2016 19:44

Yes Angel bless him Star.

Tom Burke was also in a brilliant version of Cyrano de Bergerac on Radio 4 last year. Was superb. His voice is amazing.

WickedWenchOfTheNorth · 04/02/2016 20:04

If you like Tom Burke you really should check out The Musketeers, where he plays Athos. He's brilliant!

KurriKurri · 06/02/2016 13:20

Paul Dano in a film tonight on Channel 4 - 9 pm called Prisoners. Also has Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in it. A thriller I think - looks quite good.

Travelledtheworld · 06/02/2016 20:20

Thanks for the reminder KurriKurri will be watching that.

Igneococcus · 06/02/2016 21:04

I have finally managed to catch up and I'm now a blubbing mess.

NoahVale · 07/02/2016 00:06

yes, thanks for the tip about the film, was good.

Obs2016 · 07/02/2016 02:01

Thanks Comtess!!
Hi WW!

Christ on a bike! Are we up to the last episode already? How did that happen?
Agree with lots that has been said: they've missed out Andrei's work with serfs, and they should have the epilogue or else it won't all make sense.
But I fear they can't. They haven't actually covered very much in some of the previous episodes, and now they've simply got too much to fit in. Maybe they should have gone for the 8 episodes instead of 6, as was the original idea?

Gruach · 07/02/2016 14:08

Oh. Look. It's Sunday.

However did that happen?

StarGrinStarGrinStar

regenerationfez · 07/02/2016 15:19

It's 20 minutes longer tonight, so maybe they can whip through the epilogue in 10 minutes at the end. You could probably get the gist of what has happened by visuals, but you won't get the nuanced character development, like what has happened to Natasha and how and why she has become who she is at the end, but its been that all the way through.

carabos Sonya is playing Charlotte Lucas in the new Pride and Prejudice and Zombies film!!

carabos · 07/02/2016 17:20

regenerationfez we should start up a casting agency Wink.

regenerationfez · 07/02/2016 17:37

Yes, 'Period Dramas R us'Grin

Comtess · 07/02/2016 20:40

Trouble is... I'd cast Tom Burke is all the roles. Just because... of all the reasons....

Waiting in anticipation of Paul Dano's chilly-beard.

Gruach · 07/02/2016 21:00

When I'm head of world casting Paul Dano will have all the roles. No auditions needed.

ThomasRichard · 07/02/2016 21:40

Oh gosh, properly crying over Andrei.

FairNotFair · 07/02/2016 21:41

It was beautifully done, Thomas

ThomasRichard · 07/02/2016 21:53

Yes but still

The countess' death was also beautifully done.

FairNotFair · 07/02/2016 21:57

W&P has been a slow burn for me. Wasn't sure at the start; now don't want it to end.
