Choirmaster Gareth Malone is a man on a mission. He believes Britain's schools are bursting with untapped singing talent and he's determined to prove it by starting a competitive choir from scratch in a school that's never had one before. But there's a twist. He wants to get them good enough to compete in the World Choir Games in China by the end of the school year.

Gareth's choice of school is Northolt High an everyday comp and the auditions are an exhausting affair. From wannabe R&B divas to timid 11-year-olds singing nursery rhymes, Gareth sees 160 kids from which he needs 30. There are some real gems, including 15-year-old Chelsea Campbell. But it soon becomes apparent behind the slick voice is a dubious school record. She's being transferred to another school because of 'behaviour issues'.

For the lucky few there are ecstatic scenes when they are given the news they've made it through auditions. But then the real work begins. The group have just four weeks to produce singing good enough to qualify for the World Choir Games. Gareth battles poor attendance, lack of commitment and some terrible singing by the boys in his bid to realise his dream. Has he bitten off more then he can chew? [AD,S]

oh, totally loved it - although cried through most of it (am pg and hormonal wreck). Thought the headmaster was a twat (am I allowed to say that?!). Can't stand watching teenagers being sent to fail - the girl who wasn't allowed in - Chelsea? Give her a chance ffs See - hormones!

7swansaswimmingup · 05/12/2006 08:25

I loved it too. I could huge little Enoch and that girl Chloe's transformation from horrible teen to little girl at times brought tears to my eyes. Mind you, I do think Gareth is physically very weird. Like a very delicate little girl. VERY unfanciable in my book!

venusinfurs · 05/12/2006 08:28

huge? eh? sorry, hug!

7swansaswimmingup · 05/12/2006 08:38

yea i think i must be becoming desperate from not having an interaction with males in real life if i fancied gareth, hence the

my 11 year old watching it said he looked like doctor who. he was lovely and frankly one of the main reasons i'll be watching next week.

I feel like such a lech now.

6beetrootsAmilking · 05/12/2006 08:58

the head master made me want to punch him - not letting that girl who had changed school to be in it - It could have turned her life around!

The Budn brilliant barclays statement bit was a tear jerker.

They didn't sound brilliant though - obviously they get in but there must have been some back handers!!

7swansaswimmingup · 05/12/2006 09:05

persephone, glad you thought he was cute too, phew what a relief

beety, dya reckon its obvious the dads going to get his visa? il cry my eyes out if he doesnt, such lovely kids

We just need 8codsething

I don't know about the visa -

I meant they must get to China otherwies the story is a bit lame

WonderCod · 05/12/2006 09:09

Budn brilliant barclays statement bit??

7swansaswimmingup · 05/12/2006 09:13

the family were waiting for a letter to say their kenyan father had been given a visa to come to england and join them.mum received a letter and us viewers watched her open it thinking it was the visa letter,it was a statementthe poor little boy was sooooo upset.

i didnt think they sounded too bad on that cd compared to how they were on their first practice

OP posts:
6beetrootsAmilking · 05/12/2006 09:15

i meant that the barclays statement bit was a tear jerker - the litle boy got his mother to rush home to open the letter because he thought it was a letter from emmigration.

  1. Iknew it was a statement, so the crew would have known - and they let him believe itmight be a letter saying his dad was coming. cruel! Just for good TV
winnie · 05/12/2006 09:20

The headmaster was appalling and so down on the less than perfect students. He had written off chloe and although she isn't the most committed he would have been satisfied to not give her a chance and yet in the month filmed there has been a change in her.

6beetrootsAmilking · 05/12/2006 09:25

poor Roul!

7swansaswimmingup · 05/12/2006 09:26

oh i know bless him,he was a terrible singer though. hes dropped now i presume as wasnt in the cd, such a nice boy and he practised so hard

poppynic · 05/12/2006 12:59

Yes agree, the headmaster was almost evil. Why has the school never had anything to do with the arts? There's 1300 kids there. It's got to be mismanagement by that horrible man. I wish we could vote him off. I would break my vow not to spend money on voting to do it.

I thought Chloe sang fabulously in her solo bit at the end and didn't she look happy. Why couldn't the school let her do her detention on a non-choir day, instead of trying to put her into the "fail" category.

Felt really sorry that horrible man wouldn't even consider Chelsea being a part of the choir, just "She can't represent the school" adnauseum.

Gareth has very impressive confidence for someone who appears so - umm - dweebie.
