Choirmaster Gareth Malone is a man on a mission. He believes Britain's schools are bursting with untapped singing talent and he's determined to prove it by starting a competitive choir from scratch in a school that's never had one before. But there's a twist. He wants to get them good enough to compete in the World Choir Games in China by the end of the school year.

Gareth's choice of school is Northolt High an everyday comp and the auditions are an exhausting affair. From wannabe R&B divas to timid 11-year-olds singing nursery rhymes, Gareth sees 160 kids from which he needs 30. There are some real gems, including 15-year-old Chelsea Campbell. But it soon becomes apparent behind the slick voice is a dubious school record. She's being transferred to another school because of 'behaviour issues'.

For the lucky few there are ecstatic scenes when they are given the news they've made it through auditions. But then the real work begins. The group have just four weeks to produce singing good enough to qualify for the World Choir Games. Gareth battles poor attendance, lack of commitment and some terrible singing by the boys in his bid to realise his dream. Has he bitten off more then he can chew? [AD,S]

Dh knows the Director of Cantamus, she taught at his music college. they are a girls choir with a very good reputation. I think they have training choirs too so the girls in the competitive choir (who incidentally get individual voice lessons as a perk of joining the choir) will have been singing for years. They are very very good I know a couple of ex cantamus singers.

Dh said when watching the programme the opther night that Phoenix Choir were attempting too much, these are children's hopes the BBC are playing with, entering them for a world class competitojn against choirs like Cantamus (who I think actually won the comp) would be like expecting a child who has been playing the piano for 6 months to compete against one who has been learning for 6 years.

xmasplumtartmeistergeneral · 13/12/2006 14:39

yes, really they weren't very good, although it was clear to see they had come a long way since first rehearsal together. Surely they wouldn't be able to compete at the Choir Olympics if the BBC weren't behind them? Like me taking up javelin and suddenly in the Olympic Games competing against Tessa Sanderson! (Living in the past a bit there)

Yes, quite funny the whole 'Gareth waiting for postman' scenes. Like the cameraman running down the stairs and phoning G and saying 'come to the window now and look like you are looking for the postman!'

Do you think they also took Chloe (?) aside and said, your role is to be late for everything, or don't turn up at all. Do you mind if we pierce your upper lip for effect? No, not huffy enough, cut!!!

Does anyone else get that this is telly? Of course it's spun and edited - that's why we're watching it!

Would we really bother if we didn't have swoon dishy/bleurgh not so dishy hairless Gareth with a bunch of kids who have never clapped eyes/ears on what he asking them to do, having personal traumas, behaving badly and generally being teenagers?

Or would we rather watch very nice girls with lovely voices in nice dresses (what's wrong with nice dresses unquiet?!) working very hard and doing well?

I know what I'd rather

UnquietDad · 14/12/2006 00:19

nothing wrong with nice dresses - I think you missed my point. The Herald reviewer was using this as evidence that Cantamus are "posh" and I was taking him to task!

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 18/12/2006 20:57

foxtrottothefestivegrotto · 18/12/2006 20:58

gareth

DumbledoresFairy · 18/12/2006 21:04

Is it repeated at all? I am sitting at the pc weeping with frustration as dh is insisting on watching that crappy Terry Pratchet thing and I am missing the last episode of this. I have watched all of the other 2. I am so cross.

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 18/12/2006 21:15

The whole series is repeated from Thurs night

12.05AM

DumbledoresFairy · 18/12/2006 21:20

Thanks RTKM - not much use to me though.

xmasplumtartmeistergeneral · 19/12/2006 16:40

well, what did we all think? Did we shed a tear with Gareth when the camera zoomed in on his heartbreak? Did we cringe at the level of the competition (what were the Canadian choir like with the knee slapping???)?

foxtrottothefestivegrotto · 19/12/2006 17:34

i was left wondering what has happened to the choir since, because the school music teacher didn't seem overly keen on providing a musical education within the school.

DumbledoresFairy · 19/12/2006 22:22

What happened then? I didn't get to see the last episode thanks to my Terry Pratchet obsessed dh. can anyone fill me in?

xmasplumtartmeistergeneral · 20/12/2006 08:27

Well, they got to China, sang really not too badly, but the competition was enormous! So they didn't get through to the next round and came home. They all cried, including Gareth with the camera zooming in on his tears. And that was that!!!

DumbledoresFairy · 20/12/2006 09:56

Hmmm was this documentary going for the most predictable ending award? It would win hands down.

So Gareth didn't get off with the girl who couldn't sing religious songs? Who writes these plots?

xmasplumtartmeistergeneral · 20/12/2006 19:44

oh, you know, they didn't mention her again! Forgot about her. You didn't see them singing Gloria, just Bridge over Troubled Water. All a bit confused. Well, I am anyway

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 20/12/2006 20:58
