Choirmaster Gareth Malone is a man on a mission. He believes Britain's schools are bursting with untapped singing talent and he's determined to prove it by starting a competitive choir from scratch in a school that's never had one before. But there's a twist. He wants to get them good enough to compete in the World Choir Games in China by the end of the school year.

Gareth's choice of school is Northolt High an everyday comp and the auditions are an exhausting affair. From wannabe R&B divas to timid 11-year-olds singing nursery rhymes, Gareth sees 160 kids from which he needs 30. There are some real gems, including 15-year-old Chelsea Campbell. But it soon becomes apparent behind the slick voice is a dubious school record. She's being transferred to another school because of 'behaviour issues'.

For the lucky few there are ecstatic scenes when they are given the news they've made it through auditions. But then the real work begins. The group have just four weeks to produce singing good enough to qualify for the World Choir Games. Gareth battles poor attendance, lack of commitment and some terrible singing by the boys in his bid to realise his dream. Has he bitten off more then he can chew? [AD,S]

No wonder so many kids are set up tp fail with attitudes like she exudes.

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 11/12/2006 21:38

OMG! about that head of music
probably her nose out of joint, perhaps? anyway she needs a kick up the arse.

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 11/12/2006 21:45

Jehovah's Witness
the head of music said there were no musical children in the school, and the chances of finding any talented singers were minimal
silly cow

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 11/12/2006 21:58

What's the point of having a head of music like that. It makes me very cross that music isn't promoted in schools.

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 11/12/2006 22:00

Am soooooooo pleased they weren't laughed at

julienetmum · 11/12/2006 22:01

But they are up against choirs like Cantamus who are the cream they have an awful long way to go but have done brilliantly so far.

ska · 11/12/2006 22:10

i think this is such a great idea to motivate kids who appear to be so low on self esteem - and no wonder with music teachers like that. kids today seem so un stretched at secondary schools (I have a dsd 13). music is a great way to get people motivated,

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 11/12/2006 22:11

and by the way, you're all blind and mad, Gareth is absolutely delicious. I could eat him with a spoon.
though those chinos were a bad idea, and he should certainly not try to grow a beard.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/12/2006 22:12

thought it was fantastic tonight.

first time i've seen it.

7swansaswimmingup · 11/12/2006 22:13

I'm really enjoying this.

I do feel sorry for the choir though. Having practised so hard, bonded together as a choir, had the fantastic motivation and inspiration of going to China ... in September (2006) they will have landed back at Northolt, Gareth and all the cameras will have gone, and all they'll have left is the Head of Music, who probably can't even direct a choir anyway, let alone have the interest and commitment to do so.

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 11/12/2006 22:15

I didn't see it last week, but yes I think he is cute. he has lovely cheekbones and he's talented and ever so slightly arrogant, which is always attractive imo

DumbledoresFairy · 11/12/2006 22:25

Gareth cute??????????????? Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (although I have also noticed the ever so slightly sexy arrogant streak in him) Look, I am getting slated for fancying the pants off the new Robin Hood on another thread, because he apparently looks like his beard is only there because he hasn't borrowed his dad's razor yet. Well gareth doesn't even need to shave yet! he looks about 16!

Oh, as an aside, I can't get that bloody fantastic Gloria out of my head now! I wish I could join a choir (though not with Gareth as the choirmaster).

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 11/12/2006 22:30

yes well, as my friend once said, I do seem to be attracted to the Consumptive Poet among men.
I think he has the look of David Tennant about him.
Look, these artistic boys are filthy I tell you now

winnie · 11/12/2006 22:30

I was so glad to see that Chloe stayed in.

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 11/12/2006 22:31

I have just read that the dreadful head teacher and iirc music teacher go to china with the choir

If that is the case it will be dreadful for them to not do something with them afterwards

IMHO the head and music teacher DON'T deserve to go on the trip with them

What do you guys think?

DumbledoresFairy · 11/12/2006 22:33

I'll stick to the very artistic Robin Hood then! (well he is an actor darling!) Seriously harpsi, gareth? No!!!!!!

During tonight's episode, dh was convinced he saw a woman looking out of Gareth's flat window and said "What is that woman doing there?" at which point I had to admit that, although he looks underage, he is actually over 18 and perfectly entitled to have a woman in his flat.

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 11/12/2006 22:35

I didn't see the head (missed last week) but that music teacher was pathetic - I mean what a dereliction of duty
and DG you can KEEP the actors, I have no use or purpose for actors thankyouverymuch

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 11/12/2006 22:37

oh I wish I could see this!

harpsi, I am also fond of the consumptive type. any pictures of this Gareth?
