Anyone watching this, I like Suranne Jones so I'm hoping it's good, but she is one paranoid woman, maybe she has good reasons, we'll wait and see Smile

Thanks bakeoff

nilbyname · 10/09/2015 08:15

gary so sorry for your troubles, I didn't mean to be so flippant. A knee to the stomach sounds very restrained. Good luck to you . WineFlowers

lorelei9 · 10/09/2015 09:59

I'm sure a lot of people did relate to Suranne's character, I guess I just wanted it to be about something different. It seems like "affair" is just such common fodder now and the show felt like it was marketed around her being a doctor so I hoped that would be important.

Remains to be seen, of course, but if all it is is he's screwing around, then I'll be bored.

just realised I'm out next Wednesday so will rely on this thread for spoilers to know if it's worth watching ep 2.

cheapskatemum · 10/09/2015 10:05

Ah, I've found you, good! I felt sure there'd be a thread. Some of my Confused and Hmm moments have been raised, but not all. The photos Dr F found on DH's hidden phone - who took them? I also felt, as someone up thread has said, that he has been laissez faire. He knows what an incredibly smart woman his wife is, if I were him I would be far more circumspect! He's good at lying though, so thinks he'll get away with it. Or maybe wants out of the marriage but hasn't the balls to tell her, so wants to be found out? As far as motive for having an affair goes: he has everything: good career, friends, well behaved & kind son, beautiful house & the perfect wife. He feels he can't measure up to his wife, she emasculates him, hence goes for young, malleable, impressionable woman.

Is that Ian Lavender playing the sacked GP?

Drew64 · 10/09/2015 10:08

Ohhhhh, good drama.
Initially I though "she's becoming a bit freaky" but when she found the bag in his car with a bank card, condoms and phone! OMG!!!
Looks like he is banged to rights.....or is he?

DandyDan · 10/09/2015 10:19

I think it's being suggested that he is having an affair with the daughter - but that's all by suggestion. The condoms were in someone else's bag. The girl spying on his meeting said clearly that he was kissing the girl but the camera shots we got from her point of view showed something very vague - not a full frontal snog-shot.

From the paranoia and non-GP-like behaviour of Dr Foster, it's evident that the dismissed GP has some justification for his grievances.

Carvel's character states plainly that he has lived all his life in the Parminster community, apart from five (relatively unhappy) years in London where he met Suranne Jones. She is a relatively new incomer into the community, one where her husband had a life before she knew him. My guess is that the daughter is actually his daughter from a relationship 20 years before (he is 40, she looks in her late teens). He - and many of their friends etc from the community - are keeping this fact secret to protect him (not sure why he needs to keep it secret though). He meets her in secret and hugs and kisses her as a father rather than as a lover.

member · 10/09/2015 10:44

5 parter Shock? How are they going to keep it going for that long?!

It was preposterous in places but Suranne Jones is always very watchable.

Like Dandy Dan , the only way I can see their friends and SJ's colleague being complicit to the extent they'd warn the husband she was going to follow him, is if the Parks' daughter was his. I think the daughter's long face at the party was because she resents being a secret rather than sexual jealousy.

There was more made of the condom in the secretary's bag, but something that looked like a condom packet appeared to be in the bag in the car boot when SJ found the phone though.

Of course Suranne Jones was half asleep in the first shot of the programme, wouldn't be surprised if it's all a dream...

Rollergirl1 · 10/09/2015 10:52

DH and I watched it but were very "wtf" by the end, although i still enjoyed it.

Couldn't understand the bit at the end where she found the other phone. It had pictures of him and the OW (the daughter of the restaurant woman) and also the two them with their friends and also with his secretary/assistiant. And then the text from her SJ's work colleague saying that she had left the office early and she thinks that she is going to follow him (which she did when he went to his Mum's care home). All leading you to believe that they all know about his relationship with the other woman and are explicit in keeping it from SJ. Why would they do this?

DH and I are wondering if SJ and her husband had split in the past and he was in a relationship with the restaurant woman daughter. But then SJ had some kind of mental breakdown and he had to get back with her or something.

All very weird.

On a different note, how fit is Bertie Carvel looking??! Yumm is all I can say!

SheGotAllDaMoves · 10/09/2015 10:58

SJ is always very good, but what an odd premise.

A hair made her suspicious. Really?

Rollergirl1 · 10/09/2015 11:02

The daughter being his daugher does make sense. But seems weird that all the friends seem to be actively involved in their lives and keeping it from SJ.

Also the bit where they went to the opening of the restaurant of her patient (who is the Mum of the girl), the patient clearly recognised Bertie Carvel. Why would they then go to his 40th party if there was a risk of whatever secret they are all keeping becoming know?

KitZacJak · 10/09/2015 11:04

I thought that it meant he was having affairs with all the women:

the daughter
the friend that came for dinner
his assistant
her associate

ie, he is some kind of sex addict having a kind of mid life crisis (hence the just turning 40). He meets a different women most days after work (from the list above). They of course think they are the only other one he is having an affair with and don't know about each other. This is why her colleague warned him as it might have been her night to meet him when Dr Foster expressed her suspicions of an affair.

This is why the assistant covered for him with the condoms in the laptop case and she probably thinks the other blocked out diary days are him meeting his mum.

Their relationship is fine in his eyes, he is just having his cake and eating it.

However, as there are another 5 episodes there must be more to it than her getting revenge surely?? So maybe I am getting the wrong end of the stick!!

SheGotAllDaMoves · 10/09/2015 11:05

Yes, I was thinking the girl is his DD. But why would he need to see her every day at 5pm?

SheGotAllDaMoves · 10/09/2015 11:06

Ooh kit I never thought of that. An affair with all of them. And each one not knowing about the others....

KitZacJak · 10/09/2015 11:11

Next episodes could be revenge one by one I suppose as she has already been shown to have a nasty side with the boyfriend of her patient!

FawnDrench · 10/09/2015 11:20

Am enjoying this so far.
Though it's totally unbelievable.

I wonder if the fact the husband can't swim will turn out to be relevant. A scene early on at the meal with friends was very clearly establishing this. And how SJ "saved" him while he was having an asthma attack in the water.

Also in the title opening credits various items of clothes, underwear, shoes and handbags "floated" past as if suspended in water.

Looking forward to seeing how it all develops.

Iamblossom · 10/09/2015 11:26

Well if I found a long blonde hair on my husband's scarf I would wonder where the hell it had come from.

I thought that the daughter looked mega pissed off when SJ snogged the husband at the party. Which supports the premise he is shagging her.

I also thought it was very interesting the language he used when including his wife in his speech at the party. He said how much he loved his son. IIRC he didn't use the word Love when talking about her. He said he was Lucky to have her, she was the best thing to have happened to him, she worked hard, he mentioned her earnings capability (WTAF?) and his admiration for her as a mother and professionally etc. That is not the same thing as saying I LOVE YOU!!

CatEyeFlick · 10/09/2015 11:30

thought was brilliant cant wait for next weeks episode

eddiemairswife · 10/09/2015 11:36

cheapskate It was Robert Pugh.

MaliceInWonderland78 · 10/09/2015 11:43

Sorry to spoil it all for you but I think the Blonde girl with whom the wife thinks he's having an affair is HIS daughter. This would explain why she was p'd off watching him play happy families with the wife. I also suspect that there might be some genetic problem (or something of that ilk) with the daughter - which would account for why the other Dr. was somehow involved. I suspect that the husband had a relationship with the restruanteur's wife many moons ago. An affair just seemed too obvious.

Glad I wasn't watching it with my wife! I think she'd behave in the same way as SJ's character. What's the world coming to when you can't even have an affair or maintain a secret love-child?!?!?!?

squoosh · 10/09/2015 11:52

I don't think the girl is his daughter. One of the photos showed her pouting to the camera while he kissed her on the cheek in a v. non fatherly way. And it looked as though some of the photos were taken in a vineyard/sunny location along with his assistant and the couple friend we saw at the start. So it's a grand betrayal by everyone around her.

I'm surprised to hear there's another four episodes but I presume it will involve a lot of revenge on a lot of people and I suppose there will have to be a few twists along the way.

Her character has already shown herself to be a bit scary and steely underneath her glossy Hobbs exterior so maybe she's going to go all Charles Bronson a la Death Wish on everyone's ass.

Something will definitely happen to her son too, he's very pale, shy and vulnerable. Not a good combo in these TV thrillers!

squoosh · 10/09/2015 11:58

Agree with the poster who said water is definitely going to feature at some stage!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2015 12:34

Right have paused messages

Secretary becky appologizes for Texting and said had a call from g

Kate - from simon saying sorry they couldn't meet and would meet tom at 3

RoZ - his/their friend saying that Gemma is going to follow him

Neil - best friend

2525 apparently has no credit and hasn't been topped up which is weird as must have credit or can't text

Photos are too sexy to be dad. And best friend neil ros and becky are all in on it - tho she looks young enough to be his daughter rather then a Pervy man shagging someone 20yrs younger then him

And susies daughter didn't like the kiss !!!!!

So def a secret - tho ros said to tell GEMMA a week ago (Ist may) and Gemma follows 7th may

Not surprised her head is all over the place as whatever happens they've betrayed her :(

And agree water must be themed somewhere

And didn't say he loved her :(

As I said into first reply I loved it and can't wait till next week

R00tat00tt00t · 10/09/2015 14:07

Just watched this on iplayer. I'm not sure what I thinks going on but I do think she's (SJ) a bit unhinged. Someone up thread mentioned her burning the patients boyfriend with a cigarette but I thought she was injecting him with something? Also, in relation to the son looking very pale, I think he looks like his hair has been dyed? Maybe I need my eyes tested!

DrTinkle · 10/09/2015 14:23

What a bonkers story. If she wasn't in it it would be crap.

LovelyFriend · 10/09/2015 14:26

Thanks for that Blondes

re 2525 =- I've never had PAYG but I think sometimes if you are out of credit you can get to send a few free generic "I'm out of credit" type texts.

Presumably intended so your parent can then top you up?
