Any Buffy fans around to discuss some things that have annoyed me on rewatching?

Posting in Chat because this doesn't warrant a permanent thread. I fully admit to overthinking the issues below, I've been binge watching and may have lost perspective.

  • Faith was made a slayer when Buffy died the first time. When she dies in Season 5, no mention of a duplicate Slayer, correct?
  • The Principal in Season 7 talks to Buffy about how he's looked through her file, why is her response not, 'you creepy fuck, what a breach of privacy, I left school 5 years ago'?
  • Neither Buffy or Willow have regular jobs (Willow is never seen in employment). Who pays for Willow's flights to England for rehab, their weapons, various house repairs (don't tell me Buffy could get insurance for accidental damage / civil unrest with her claims history), Dawn's school books etc.?
  • When Spike goes to get himself restored to his former self: why exactly does that Demon con him and actually give him his soul? If it was a good demon I could understand it's ultimately setting him on the road to redemption, but it's not.
  • Why did Joss Whedon make Angel Irish, when it must have been obvious within 5 syllables that David B's Irish accent was the worst thing in the world?
  • Kennedy: I was all for Willow finding someone else after Tara, why on earth did they make that person such an utter knob? Is she meant to have some redeeming features / be perfect for Willow and the actor ballsed it up?
  • After Joyce died, why didn't Buffy's dad make a single appearance, surely they could have found some reason / decent plot to make this happen, it's so clanging for me that a parent, no matter how absent, wouldn't even stop by once after his childrens' mother died suddenly.

But don't they talk about Buffy being paid retroactively once reinstated? Oh no, I think that's Giles... I'll shut up now.

lunar1 · 26/07/2015 21:43

Why did they kill Tara? Why didn't zander marry Anya? And why did they bring in so many awful characters near the end?

Spike definitely went to get his soul back, it's explicit in the episode of Angel I just watched. It's purely set up as a fakeout for the audience. Apart from anything else he wouldn't need demon help to kick Buffy's ass, because she's already not protected by his chip.

I assume Willow has an allowance from her uncaring but comfortably off parents.

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 26/07/2015 21:44

Buffy is eventually paid a salary for being a slayer... can't remember when that comes in..maybe season 5..or might be even 7..at some point she tells the Council to piss off and Giles argues for her to be paid.. hence no more fastfood job.

I always thought that the Demon who gave Spike back his soul didn't do it as a kind thing... but to make Spike suffer more! God I loved Spike.... :D

MrsBertMacklin · 26/07/2015 21:46

Xander had huge underlying fear or ending up in a marriage like his parents. One of Anya's victims turned up at their wedding in the guise of future-Xander and showed him a fake future where everything turned to shit.

Xander found out the truth, but still left Anya at the altar. Then came back and just wanted to date, yet wasn't spurned by Buffy fans.

Imagine the AIBU on that one, he'd get his eye poked out ohno that happened anyway

I meant the term. 'Spuffy' has been a term for around 15 years, IIRC. It was around in the early days of internet fanfic.

Ahem.

So my friends tell me.

TheIncomparableDejahThoris · 26/07/2015 21:47

More to the point - did that demon tie Spike in to the amulet and to Wolfram and Hart?

The amulet was sent by Wolfram and Hart to Angel with some information about how vital it could be. Angel gave it to Buffy because he thought she needed it more. She gave it to Spike, because she thought he needed it more.

Thus, Wolfram and Hart's plot got buggered up. Shame. Grin

Why was she so incapable and childish on starting high school, when willow and Xander and Buffy were deemed so adult at the same time? How did the strength of vampires vary so wildly so that sometimes they could be killed multiply in seconds, and other times it took a gang forever?

I think because, really, she was a few months old. Willow and Xander and the rest really had lived long enough to be high schoolers. Dawn's memories were false, so she just didn't have the life experience.

MrsBertMacklin · 26/07/2015 21:47

But who funds The Watchers Council? Is it a secret division of NATO?

I think I need to watch Angel and read the comics.

Wait... Wouldn't Buffy's file have been destroyed when they, you know, BLEW UP THE SCHOOL? Or did they explain that one, I don't remember.

Agree about shit accents. They shouldn't even have tried Confused. Kendra was by far the worst, though.

DilysPrice · 26/07/2015 21:49

Also the memories Dawn did have were of being the baby of the family. The Scooby gang were all only children.

I think Principal Wood is actually lying about the file. He knows about her through his Watcher contacts, but doesn't want to give it away. Later on he laughs at the idea that he might have hired her for her skills, remember?

How did the strength of vampires vary so wildly so that sometimes they could be killed multiply in seconds, and other times it took a gang forever?

Well, some days at work, I'm really efficient, others I wang around on the internet and take 2 hours to read a document because I can't focus. Same thing?

OP posts:
JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/07/2015 21:58

Grin Maybe it was a little later. But it was around before I went to university, so cannot have been much later.

TheIncomparableDejahThoris · 26/07/2015 21:59

Grin MrsBert

Same thing, deffo.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/07/2015 21:59

Btw, I found this site again via the Internet Wayback Machine. I used to love their reviews. <a class="break-all" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20070706021418/web.ukonline.co.uk/fringedweller2/buffy7.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">web.archive.org/web/20070706021418/web.ukonline.co.uk/fringedweller2/buffy7.htm

tilder · 26/07/2015 22:01

I think vampire strength was sometimes to do with age and/or experience of the vampire.

Mmmm spike

SleepIsOverrated · 26/07/2015 22:03

Scarily I think it might be nearly 20 years since the first series aired here. I know it was only a year or so after Friends...

I remember live discussions post episodes too. I must be officially old! Also went to see James Marsters in concert. Yum.

CrapBag · 26/07/2015 22:04

I feel the need to watch Buffy again now but I sold my boxset.

I hated hated hated seasons 6 and 7. They should have left well alone after the excellent season 5. Season 3 was great too. I loved Faith.

Dawn was a wet fart who should have died when Glory was around. I'm not sure who irritates me more, her, Kendra, Kennedy or the fucking Trio (not Jonathon though, I felt sorry for him, Warren was the ass).

I did like the Buffybot. I think Sarah Michelle Geller is great. Loved her in Cruel Intentions too.

What is your favourite episode? I have loads. I love Bad Girls, the one where Buffy can hear their thoughts, Once More With Feeling, Band Candy. Too many I think.

MrsBertMacklin · 26/07/2015 22:09

The Body and Hush are 'the best' in terms of well made, writing and acting, but the ones that have stuck with me are 'Normal Again' and 'Grave'.

Xander telling Willow that he loves her in 'Grave' and her eventual breakdown, All The Tears.

It's been years since I watched it, and didn't get through all series as went crap imo but episode with the creepy silent killers who take victims voices first so no one will hear them scream freaked the shit out of teenage me.
