Corrie Thread - Bet Emily is relieved there is one less child for her 24 hour creche

With Miley gone, never to be heard of for the next 15 years until she turns up with a new head, at least Emily won't have to babysit her every day and night for the foreseeable future.

New thread where we can hope the scriptwriters wake up and actually start paying attention to plot lines and character histories.

Agree with everyone that it just wasn't good enough.

Looks like they're going to ruin Amy as well by going OTT on the "feistiness".

AgathaChristie01 · 14/07/2015 16:19

Yes, I liked the singing part, and close ups on various faces. They should have concentrated the episodes last night on the funeral, not cutting to and fro to possibly the most inane characters and storyline ever. I'd have liked Eileen and Liz chatting a bit more too. There would have been time for all of this, if they left out Callum and co.
Looking at Corrie's Facebook page, there seems to be lots of praise for how the funeral was done. I was disappointed, and I don't believe it was in any way an adequate tribute to the great Deirdre / Anne.

Jo4040 · 14/07/2015 16:42

People have got this so spot on, on here.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2015 16:46

I am a bit of a flakey follower of Corrie, i dip in and out and don't watch every episode.
But I would have loved an hour long episode with a full church service with hymns and songs and some old characters coming back and saying nice things.

Every time the Platts appeared I wanted a remote to switch back over to the funeral IYKWIM. And the stuff with Tracey was beyond ridiculous.

Perhaps the Platts should have a spin off series of their own so we can ignore them.

sweetgrape · 14/07/2015 16:51

I agree about the flash backs on Deidre. It probably would have had us all in tears but it would have been so lovely. She has been on our screens for so long, going back to when she married Ray Langton. Ann Kirkbride the actress was worthy of a far better send off.

Brilliant idea Smile

Very disappointed with last night's episodes apart from Ken's speech - hard to know where the acting started and ended in that scene.

GetHappy · 14/07/2015 18:33

Totally agree it should have all been about Deidre.

A lovely funeral then back at the wait each charecter close to her tell a memory of her. Like what happens at funerals!!

Where was all the guests!! Deidre's friends from when she worked at the council. Why was only half the street there!!

Like the food poisoning storyline with Norris WTF was that all about??!!

The only touching part for me was when they sang "Bridge over troubled waters" and that was because you could see the emotion was real.

woodhill · 14/07/2015 18:38

where was Mary and Sean and Kal's parents. please no more Platts.

agreevabout the council workers or someone like Mavis or Curly would have been wonderful

southeastdweller · 14/07/2015 18:43

And Samir's family.

And Ken's two other sons.

And Ken's grandson.

SwedishEdith · 14/07/2015 18:47

Sarah, Bethany and Tracey (and now Amy as well) all have no redeeming features at all. I don't think I really know anyone in real life like that. I can think of a few borderlines but no-one as relentlessly unpleasant as any of these characters.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2015 18:49

Bit controversial but I don't really think Roy's character is bringing much to the party any more.

SwedishEdith · 14/07/2015 18:51

I like his bond with Carla though. He's a good device for letting her show some vulnerability.

TheLastPickleInTheJar · 14/07/2015 19:36

Chatting in the pub with flashbacks after the funeral would have been wonderful. I would have loved to have seen some old clips of Deirdre. She was taken so suddenly it would have been nice to have her appear in episode one last time.

And absolutely other should have been only about her. They've done single-story episodes in the past - some with just one or two actors - they could and should have done that for Deirdre's send off. No Tracy drama, no dreary platts, callum and vicky pollard. Just Deirdre, her friends and their memories. Our memories. And the episode should have been dedicated to her at the end.

sweetgrape · 14/07/2015 23:04

It just doesn't work with Sarah and her daughter.Every time I see them together I have difficulty in seeing them as mum and daughter. It just looks ridiculous Sarah trying to act the strict parent but at the same time acting like a pouting petulant child herself. I wish they'd just sod off back to Italy and take the ridiculous Callum with them.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2015 23:08

YY to all of that sweet. And them saying Bethany was fluent in Italian, wouldn't she have a bit of an accent?

hildasmuriel · 15/07/2015 08:18

I still love Roy. His face in church and not singing was just beautifully done, he's a unique character and I never get tired of his gentle humanity.

hildasmuriel · 15/07/2015 08:28

I think it's totally the writing letting the side down at the moment. Too many stories drift on and then suddenly vanish (Miley...) and the characters aren't given space to develop and are subject to plots rather than the plots being driven by the characters.

On reflection the Deirdre stuff was always going to be difficult to pull off. Every time they said she stayed away because of Tracey we were all sat there knowing the real reason she stayed away so it didn't seem right. It felt contrived. To be fair the show has had a run of forced absences which all felt contrived - because they were. I think they may be better covering future absences of extended leave by just leaving that person out for a bit, always an excuse for someone being out of a scene rather than weeks.

And I say it again WHERE WAS ECCLES? Deirdre loved that dog. Surely he's not gone to care for a sick relative.

Reignbeau · 15/07/2015 08:56

I was thinking while they were sat in church how many of them have lost a spouse. Ken, Dev, Emily, Roy, Gail, Audrey. Don't know why anyone bothers to get married in Weather field Grin.

ProfYaffle · 15/07/2015 10:16

I think Eccles has gone to stay with Hacker Grin

I agree about the writing. All the complaints of characters running out of steam/being annoying etc just comes back to the writing. Any character and any storyline can be gripping if it's written well.

eddiemairswife · 15/07/2015 10:44

I agree about Eccles, also what has happened to Maria's huge black dog and Steve's dog. Surely dogs don't have restricted working hours like children.

AgathaChristie01 · 15/07/2015 11:09

Another big fan of Roy here. When he spoke about Deirdre and how he first met her, it was vintage Roy, just spoken so honestly and gently. It was one of the few moments, of the Deirdre death/ funeral that I thought was truly lovely.

AgathaChristie01 · 15/07/2015 11:10

Completely agree.

Sparklingbrook · 15/07/2015 11:15

I knew my not enjoying Roy's character would be controversial. i just find him a bit depressing. Sad

I feel i may not be a proper fan.

Jo4040 · 15/07/2015 11:20

Roy adds depth to the show. Without Roy there would be a lot of ordinary characters. Hes a very loved personalipersonality.

Jo4040 · 15/07/2015 11:21

Bloody hell lol...personality
