Bit risqué!! Definitely not one to watch when the kids might wander into the lounge...

And definitely a Russell T Davies series - Queer as Folk's little brother

Haha glad you liked it MuddaofSurburbia I think I just made it up, I feel like I missed something, ....Im too young to have seen QAF.

thenewbrunette · 27/02/2015 18:38

I watched QAF at the time and loved it but can remember v few actual details about it. May get box set and re-watch.

BestIsWest · 27/02/2015 19:02

I think last night's episode could almost stand alone as a drama and it would still be very good.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 27/02/2015 19:09

what with:

-Phil in QAF
-me tweeting about FIVE MINUTES after diver's first appearance that he was a Wrong Un
-OH saying earlier in the week 'that guy [Lance] has got such a nice face'

I am gutted that I didn't work this out beforehand

get box set everyone. I think you might need 5 minutes to get over late 90s fashion/Stuart's overall orangeness but you will love

QAF is so amazing. Loved seeing the Hazel crossover in cucumber. It's stayed with me today. Dh hasn't seen any of the episodes and was messing on his phone whilst I was watching last night and he ended up just staring open mouthed at the TV at the end. Fantastic episode. So human. Building up Lance's backstory first gave it so much more impact. Love channel 4 for always being prepared to take risks with programmes such as this.

ProfYaffle · 27/02/2015 19:42

Just caught up ...... stunned, just stunned. Genuinely feel really upset. After Breaking Bad this is easily the best thing I've ever watched on TV.

Loved seeing Hazel, weirdly dh and I were wondering whether Lance had moved into Stuart's block or something. I said 'he's just walking out into Queer as Folk isn't he?' then Hazel turns up.

caker · 27/02/2015 19:51

Episode 6 was so good, absolutely harrowing and tragic. I'm glad it wasn't the last episode, that would have been awful. Loved Hazel appearing!

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 27/02/2015 19:51

shittington

I'm going to have to watch it, aren't I

I'm already shook from Wolf Hall on Wednesday when I knew exactly what was going to happen

BestIsWest · 27/02/2015 20:14

Yes, watch. It is really good.

darksideofthemooncup · 27/02/2015 20:29

I wonder if Gogglebox will feature it next week. It has stayed with me all day. So sad but horribly inevitable in hindsight. RTD said something like 'you can see the wrongness radiating out of Daniel' and it's true, there was something deeply unsettling about him.

adrianna22 · 27/02/2015 22:46

Very sad Sad.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/02/2015 23:33

I was wondering that about Gogglebox. Would be interesting to see their reactions. DH found it violent but not traumatised like I felt.

Outstanding episode! Brilliant acting and writing! Horrible,of course, but loved it. I am 47, so flashbacks resonated with me.I remember the actor playing Lance was in This Life in a small role in the 90s.That was a classic. Top notch stuff!

Oh blimey drigon of COURSE he was He was one of the solicitors at Annas office. Wasnt he the one who caught her snorting coke in the loo?

HelenaDove · 28/02/2015 00:41

Flipflipping i think its great Channel 4 takes these risks.

Where they let themselves down is programmes like Benefit Street!

StaircaseAtTheUniversity · 28/02/2015 01:10

Ghoul I also had a bit of a panic attack after it because I thought that's exactly what it must be like to die. I don't know how RTD knows, but he knows.

We just rewatched QAF and honestly, as fresh today as the day it was made. The only thing that dates it is the lack of technology/ fact the tech is a bit crap (Stuarts flip phone, them watching videos etc). Other than that, I think you could easily watch it now and assume it was contemporary.

I really enjoyed Lance meeting Hazel. Love to imagine that QAF and Cucumber and Banana are all in the same canon and they all know each other and go to the same clubs.

HelenaDove · 28/02/2015 02:02

Staircase apparently your life is suppossed to flash before your eyes and t RTD and cast and crew etc conveyed this really well.

drigon · 28/02/2015 02:16

Yep,Helenadove, I think his name was Graham in it. I've never seen QAF, but will try and watch it. This Life was a bit older, but I bet was comparable. All the characters were brilliant in it. Agree that this Cucumber ep.could be a stand-alone drama.I loved the bit where Lance came home every Christmas when he was younger, with his dad's reactions on opening the door to him. I've been thinking of the ep.all day.So good.

Tinklypink · 28/02/2015 03:15

So glad to find this thread - I was traumatised! Still am...

Amazing TV and I missed the date at the beginning so was really shocked. Willed him to live. Loved Denise Black

The RT article was brilliant too.

Did anyone notice the reference in Banana?

ProfYaffle · 28/02/2015 06:42

We rewatched QAF recently too. It's on Channel 4 OD as a boxset. I really identified with the characters at the time, I'm a similar age to them and remember having a similar crisis of 'I'm getting too old for all this clubbing' around the same time. Plus I was housesharing with a gay friend and we went to Canal St reasonably often so I knew the places they were going to.

Cucumber feels like a continuation of the same story in a way.

One minor point, in the RT interview, the interviewer says Hazel says she walks Canal St 'with the boys and the water', I heard it as 'with the boys from the water', ie ghosts of the drowned boys. Did anyone else hear that too?

ProfYaffle · 28/02/2015 06:42

Oh, and dh and I said the same about QAF, it's only the technology that dates it.

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 28/02/2015 07:18

Tinklypink- yes it was referenced in Banana, this week was about two women on a date, one is a police officer (I think) who talks about it the murder she dealt with at work that day.

Allice · 28/02/2015 09:20

Just watched, was horrific but beautifully acted and written. Poor lance.

alpharinth · 28/02/2015 09:44

Well I was expecting it from the 'title page' at the start, and the dire warnings. But it was extremely well done and very powerful. Great skills from both of them.

WinterHoliday · 28/02/2015 14:15

I've just caught up with it as I was away on Thursday. I almost gave up on the series earlier on but glad I stuck with it now. Very powerful and shocking! Definitely the best episode and could almost stand on its own. I liked the scenes with Lance's family too.

I also liked seeing Hazel from Queer As Folk. I recently re-watched that series on 4OD. Worth seeing again or for anyone who missed it first time round.

Banana was good too this week. A bit of light relief after Cucumber and a mention of events from that episode.
