My own take on it was that he eventually did find Ollie but his breakdown that made him harass young boys of Ollie's age meant that ironically, when he did find him nobody was prepared to take him seriously and he was dragged away just as he found him. I think the ending was ambiguous and for the viewer to decide what the last scene meant.

sweetiepie1979 · 16/12/2014 23:11

Oh my god it must be him! Yes!! Thank you trucking along weep weep

Blimey. That looks too much like him to be a coincidence!

firefly78 · 16/12/2014 23:14

so if it is ollie is he ok what happened to him in the last 8 years?!! i thought it was brilliant.

CrapBag · 16/12/2014 23:17

I think bottleofbear has it. That boy looks exactly like the future efit photo.

Flibbertyjibbet · 16/12/2014 23:19

Well of course the Russian boy looked like the photo fit.
Tony is running around looking for his son, why would he go after boys that look nothing like ollie????

BOFster · 16/12/2014 23:19

Yes, you might be right there, bottleofbeer. I think we are meant to be pulled along with Tony's delusion/hope. Perhaps that is the challenge- we are forced into an existential choice: do we align ourselves with the characters who moved on with life and found some peace, or do we identify with the parent who never gives up? It's not even clear if that way ultimately lies madness, because hope ultimately reunited Baptiste with his daughter, so who is to say Tony is wrong?

ChristmasJumperWearer · 16/12/2014 23:23

Wow, I sobbed during the wedding speech too. Which actually felt quite cathartic. Emily said she felt relieved...I wonder if the intention was for the viewer to feel the same.

And then they chucked the last scene with Tony at us, just to twist the knife?

We can't be sure about the ending unless one of the actors or writers makes a statement in the press about it.

I've loved it, although found it harrowing as a parent to watch.

Flibbertyjibbet · 16/12/2014 23:23

I do like a donut or two....I have a humdrum home life and two sons. Which cagney or lacy am I? Or the older one in the duo with suranne Jones. ....

LineRunner · 16/12/2014 23:24

Would a boy's ears and nose change that much?

BOFster · 16/12/2014 23:26

I'd be Cagney every time. Probably because of the drinking.

bottleofbeer · 16/12/2014 23:31

My gut goes with Tony. I can't decide if the boy was plain old bemused by the drawing or if he recognised it.

FurryTrousers · 16/12/2014 23:31

It was very good, and thought provoking. But very upsetting at times tonight. I am still sobbing at some of it, 2 hours later.

ToffeeCaramel · 16/12/2014 23:32

I think if we were supposed to think that the boy at the end was just one of many random.boys that Tony mistakenly thought was Ollie they wouldn't have lingered on the boys face so long with him looking like he was trying to remember something. They'd have just had him looking bemused by Toby's bonkers behaviour and then moved the camera away. I think we were supposed to wonder if it was really him. He might remember now and contact the authorities. That's my take on it.

BOFster · 16/12/2014 23:34

I think my gut goes with Emily. I think.

AlienTaxFiend · 16/12/2014 23:37

Don't understand the time frame as obvs Emily and Mark's wedding would have been some time after the last bit in France with Alain in hospital and Georges shooting himself... so how come Julien was calling on the wedding day with that news?

Good spot on the photofit, but I fear we will be ever at one with Tony and never get closure on the case...

bottleofbeer · 16/12/2014 23:38

I'd prefer to go with Emily. I think after that amount of time not knowing, there would be relief that she's had some sort of ending (I will not say closure!). At least in knowing there was no prolonged suffering at the hands of paedophiles. And we were led down that path for weeks. I'm really surprised Vincent didn't have more to do with it, with his story being told throughout. I suppose that was just to highlight the grey areas in the subjects touched upon.

SirVixofVixHall · 16/12/2014 23:41

The boy said "I don't know" according to my dH. Girl in wedding was Monique, I am sure.
But anyway, hated the ending, just hated it, I thought it was pretty cruel, now I don't know whether to believe that the boy is Ollie, or that Tony has become deranged by grief, or both. Life may be ambiguous with nothing ever resolved but this is a drama, I detest an ambiguous ending, I will now be like Tony, searching for all time, for the truth.... AAAAAaaaaaaaarrrrgghhhhhh.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/12/2014 23:41

yah, seen it, thank god for bbc streaming and caught the ending an hour later :)

i was cursing!!!!!!

didnt expect that from vincent :( brought back some bad memoriesfor me :( dont like seeing hanging :(

george deserved to die but again why didnt he find out what happened to body, if ollie was killed, how/where did they dispose of his body

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm dissapointed :(

no body so ollie could be alive .............

all this could have been saved/not happened if the stupid mayor checked ollie for a pulse Hmm

surely an sane person would actually check someone was dead .......

pissed off not a proper ending, reminds me of broadchurch, felt cheated then :(

i assume tony went a bit nutty as couldnt let go as needed to see a body, so went round checking all 13yrish boys

and yes course a 5yr would rem his parents, even if not seen for years

im a nanny and if i see a child a few years after a job,esp one of school age then they def rem me

and all coz of a bloody cat Hmm ollie didnt even have the bloodyscarf when he went swimming

pah, off to bed and will mutter and moan about this

not sure if want to see series 2, if ending is anything like this series

BOFster · 16/12/2014 23:49

It was a fox, not a cat, so that explains Olleh's fascination. I'm sorry the suicide scene brought back horrible memories for you, Blondes Flowers.

I have to admit I thought the ending was as bottleofbeer describes. That he has finally found ollie but is cruelly dragged away by the police.

roisin897 · 17/12/2014 04:37

I thought the ending was powerful and clever. It gives the viewer a tiny insight into the uncertainty, frustration and lack of closure for families and relatives of presumed murder victims, when there is no body, so no closure. Some people simply cannot accept this, so they cannot grieve and return to any semblance of a 'normal' life, even years later.

Just think how frustrated some people on here are at the fact that not all the leads have been explained and that there isn't a neat resolution that categorically answers all your questions.
