I think the "unhappy ever after" ending was perfect, but unsettling. It probably matches more accurately with real life, hence "The Missing" and not just "Missing" - in other words, this is how many families' stories end Sad.

I think Malik might have just been trying to scare Tony into confessing/telling him what he knew. The whole 'I know what happened' thing fits in with his role as the sensationalist writer, all drama and no consideration for the people actually involved.

Yes, great post from LillianGish, you really nailed it.

MonstrousPippin · 18/12/2014 09:53

I realise now that Malik was kind of a red herring, but did anyone ever work out what was going on with him personally? I remember when Ziane handed over the piece of evidence to Malik in the car, Malik spouted some stuff about how his 'time hadn't come yet' and how he still felt like he had 'more to offer'. He was talking all mysteriously like he was continuing his investigations because he was trying to atone for something or get revenge for something. Maybe I was reading too much into it but I don't remember that ever being explained.

I assumed Malik's "I know what you did" referred to Tony killing Ian (which Malik knew about through hacking into Tony's voicemail)?

I agree that there seem to be a load of loose ends about Malik: all his pronouncements earlier in the series which fizzled out later. Is that the point, that through the experience of caring for his son with cystic fibrosis he found his humanity and let go of his obsession with the past?

jenna27 · 18/12/2014 12:03

He just said hed finished it or somthing there was blood and he opened the boot and looked in we never saw what it was he looked at

Flibbertyjibbet · 18/12/2014 12:08

He also tapped the phone message where Emily tells tony something about 'what he did to Ian garrett'. Malik jumped to the (correct) conclusion that Ian killed him and has spent years trying to get that confirmed. Unfortunately vincent couldn do that. Then malik realised if he opens his mouth he can be done for perverting the course of justice so he's let his obsession drop.

Must tidy up, I get it now!!! Well done and THANK YOU! It was driving me nuts!
I agree with Lilian totally. Ollie is dead, the mum can come to terms with it but dad is a tortured soul searching anywhere a flimsy lead may take him. Totally heartbreaking.

ChoochiWoo · 18/12/2014 13:49

just finished last episode, that was so sad. Sad Sad

Clawdy · 18/12/2014 14:34

Was there something after the credits? Missed it?

EauLittleRougeofBethlehem · 18/12/2014 14:37

It was a trailer for season 2. There was a girl on a swing and a Baptiste voiceover saying sometimes it's worse to find a child alive than for the child to be dead or something like that.

ToffeeCaramel · 18/12/2014 14:40

I don't think anyone thought olly being knocked down was part of a complicated plan to kidnap him and spirit him away did they? More the possibility of an opportunist thing when whatsisname realised he wasn't dead?

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/12/2014 15:14

still cant beleive they made that polt last 8hrs Hmm

bbc1 said before it started to stay watching after the credits ......

I don't think anyone thought olly being knocked down was part of a complicated plan to kidnap him and spirit him away did they? No - the complicated plans and scenarios were what people imagined might have happened rather than the blunt reality of what actually did. It was almost an anti-climax. He wandered off - no one lured him away. The paedophile ring was incidental (though not for all the other kids on those tapes). As Baptiste pointed out this was in fact the best case scenario for poor Olleh.

bottleofbeer · 18/12/2014 15:57

Not only have America already got it. They were a week ahead of us.

BeyondTheTreelights · 18/12/2014 16:00

Well, im looking forward to s2 even if a load of people are saying they wont watch it Grin

susiedaisy · 18/12/2014 16:06

Thank you mustidyup. I couldn't remember why the undercover cop got killed or his involvement in the plot.

UnexpectedSchoolOffer · 18/12/2014 16:21

Enjoyed watching this.

Can someone tell me what Emily's father was referring to when him and Tony were talking. He said they did something bad.

jenna27 · 18/12/2014 16:55

Coz tony beat greg up for kissing emily and with he dad being a judge they paid him off so tony never got done for it, i think series 2 should be good apparantly its about a young girl who goes missing but is found years later

UnexpectedSchoolOffer · 18/12/2014 16:58

Thank you Jenna.

EauLittleRougeofBethlehem · 18/12/2014 17:03

Emily's dad paid off Greg so he wouldn't go to the police about being beaten up by Tony. Olleh was about to be born and Emily's dad didn't want her getting stressed. I think (can't remember) that this was kept secret from Emily.

If we do get the Williams brothers on for a webchat we'll have to ask about the discrepancy in dates. Grin

Quodlibet · 18/12/2014 18:13

Late to the party here but I thought the writing was weak in loads of ways. Far too much easy exposition with character motivations lazily/clumsily revealed ('But George! You are my brother' 'You're on your deathbed Alain, you've got no reason not to tell us' 'Well, hmmm, this bar I bought doesn't make me any money. Tell you what, man I met 2 minutes ago, I'll tell you how I was involved in the highly illegal dealings around your son if you pay me off with €15k...)
Aside from the red herrings that don't quite add up to anything satisfying, there were also far too many ludicrous plot points for my liking ('well, as it happens, for some entirely spurious reason I have painstakingly noted down every single item brought into my charity shop along with the name and address of the donor, and the records stretching back 7 years are right here on my desk. That yellow scarf, hmmm, here it is'). All that served to make me quite angry - there was acting talent struggling to deliver thin writing IMO.
I also got irrationally wound up by Olleh's 2014 Jellycat fox in 2006.

AliceinWinterWonderland · 18/12/2014 19:04

I think it was good, but there were some things that were clumsy. It could have been much better.

alltheworld · 18/12/2014 22:56

Well...

The whole thing was saved by Baptiste and some pretty amazing acting (even Emily got better by the end).

But there really wasn't a mystery.. there were about three clues: 1. scarf leading to house, 2. picture on wall, confirming at house 3. video of Ollie from window at house..

That was it until the sobriety coin/medal which of course then pointed at the real culprit.

Some things were ludicrous. If you are a drunk driver, you just hit and run, surely? If you are an upandcoming police detective and you realise in the last episode that the mayor is in on it and you need to "pick him up" - why do you forget that you inadvertently tipped him off 30 minutes before (until Baptiste reminds you..)

Also, whenever they ran out of things to do with characters they just killed them off.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/12/2014 23:03

Yes, I agree with you alltheworld. No one who runs over a small child with their Dad shouting their name is going to hang around, they would just drive away. Totally unbelievable that bit. And George not checking that Ollie was in fact dead, before arranging dangerous crims to come and dispose of his body.
