Good thinking, Araminta: it seems strange to have had Mark and son already out there (instead of just having Mark arrive there after being sent from UK) if it were not significant.
Mark is also tall, like Tony, so the two father/ son combos could (maybe, in dusky light) be mistaken for each other by people who don't know them well but heard the English voices.

I may avail myself of Ziane pics when I've finished making dinner, AuntieStella, though I think he's really a bit too pretty for me.

(Please, no sexy pics of James Nesbitt though!)

(Please, no sexy pics of James Nesbitt though! Why on earth not? He's clearly the most handsome actor in it!! Smile

I can't see the attraction of any of the men

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 18:15

Who could forget ep1 of Cold Feet?

Would this thread benefit from being reminded of the buttock rose?

Ohmygrood · 08/12/2014 18:25

Im wondering about tony and the missing minutes from his timeline. If Tony was somehow responsible for ollie's death at the pool, then it would make sense that he would cover it up and lie based on his character. We know that he can lie when under pressure as he has done this. The search for ollie could be to fulfill his need for an obsession, but also to try to remain in contact with Emily.

But if ollie wasn't in the cellar, how did the drawing get on the wall?

Did Tony go down into the cellar because he knew that the drawing was there?

TabithaMcKitten · 08/12/2014 18:34

Could the evidence be a driving license or photo ID that shows that one of the characters (say Tony or Mark) has a different name?

TwiggyHeart · 08/12/2014 18:39

Ohmy, I like your thinking! I did think memory stick but there was a 'look' exchanged which implied he saw something significant when he looked in the envelope, doesn't tie in with him having the contents for 24 hours though.

EauLittleRougeofBethlehem · 08/12/2014 18:41

That's pretty convincing, Ohmygrood

I put my theory of the day on the Spoilers thread, and it covered a possibility of what happened in the cellar that could mean Ollie was never there.

I think it's OK to repeat here, because it's all based on what we saw in ep6.

My suspect du jour is Karl Sieg. He was low-level, local French fixer for the Romanians. That does not necessarily mean it was his only criminality. And we tend to assume other criminality in the CdeB area.

Ollie was never in the house. The boy at the window was James, because Mark was meeting the gang (though as far as the police were concerned, he was on a family holiday, not vanishing abroad inexplicably).

Something happened in the house that required a ProNettoyage clean up. Sieg had to do it, and used opportunity to cover his own tracks by planting items to lay a false trail.

We saw a shot of the under stairs alcove, and it was cluttered. Why on earth would Ollie have drawn on the wall behind a pile of stuff? Assuming he had something to draw with handy. Why would Sieg have cleaned behind a pile of stuff?

Sieg had a yellow cloth in his cleaning box.

Did he leave clues, in case he needed to incriminate the Romanians (to divert attention from himself, or to reinsure his well-being with them)

Sieg was watching the road by the pool. Returing to the scene? Worried something might be found? Waiting for police to complete search and leave, so he could dispose of incriminating items he still had in the back of the van near the disappearance scene.

Sieg only said the minimum to the Hughes, and even that only when assured by Baptiste it would be inadmissible because of the bribe.

TwiggyHeart · 08/12/2014 18:47

I also think there is more to Sieg. It was very odd why they didn't press him for info when they met (I would think if you were handing over 15k Eur you would want to make sure that you found out everything)

Sheitgeist · 08/12/2014 19:05

Oh my, yes, AuntieStella ... "The world's first human vase" he described himself as. A very memorable image.
Hmm, OK, JN is not devoid of sexiness.

In the name of all that's holy, no sexy pics of Jason Flemyng though Grin

But if the boy in the window was James, which is feasible given that they very much resembled each other and that fact seems to be important, why would Mark not raise the alarm and say that this gang had his son, even if it meant busting his cover? If he was actually there at the time, why was James treated so roughly?

zzzant · 08/12/2014 19:09

Georges is involved. He is running the ring. Mark it down.!!

Vistaverde · 08/12/2014 19:11

As I said on thread 2 I think the item found in the drain belonged to Vincent. Thereby proving his alibi false and a probable witness to events. I think Ziane gave the journalist the evidence for 24 hours to give him enough time to confront Vincent with it.

Ohmygrood · 08/12/2014 19:18

I also think it could have been James at the window. When Emily first ran up to James and mark in the street, he jumped back from her. He was scared and mark was holding onto him quite firmly. I wondered if he could have been Romanian and he was the ' cargo ' they had been moving. (Already posted this theory on thread 2!)

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 19:20

Mark wouldn't raise the alarm, because James wasn't abducted.

Mark is one of the gang, and James was only there because there was nowhere else to park him during the business meeting. James was meant to be sitting quietly, but wandered off and got pulled away from the window because it was vital that no-one saw signs of life in what was meant to be an unoccupied house. It wasn't as rough as it seemed when slowed down, and viewed with the expectation that it was done by someone who wanted to harm the boy.

DiscoDancer · 08/12/2014 19:24

Finally caught up with the episodes so marking place Smile

Ohmygrood · 08/12/2014 19:25

Perhaps James will see the video on Emily's phone and remember.

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 19:26

"The world's first human vase" he described himself as. A very memorable image.

And one readily available online. Would people like to see it again here?

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 19:32

Does Mark know Emily has seen the footage?

Because unless she's told him, he won't know as he's not an official part of the 2014 reopening of the case in France, and I can remember Emily mentioning it only to Sieg (Mark not at that meeting). I'm pretty sure neither Baptiste nor Tony have mentioned it to him. Anyone remember more?

James wouldn't know the significance of what happened that night (just waiting round, being Bored Daddy) so probably doesn't talk about it, and 2006 probably isn't a huge topic of conversation in that household anyhow.

Ohmygrood · 08/12/2014 19:44

I reckon if mark knew about the footage he'd have been with her at the meeting. And her phone would mysteriously disappear.

And if you enlarge the shot, you'll see a person at the window...

(sorry, I'll get my coat)

Thanks sheitgeist, that is how confused I am!
