I habe also run out of theories but also suspect mark is involved in special ops and undrrcover work. I don't think he know who took ollie but he possibly deliberately witheld info which meant he coukd have been found...

primarynoodle · 07/12/2014 19:50

I thought the significance of them being in the flower shop was that Emily was going to use the wedding money?

I agree with whoever said in thread 2 that James was meant to be the abducted child not Ollie and Emily mistaking James for Ollie was the first clue.

can't wait to find out what happens!!!

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/12/2014 19:58

I hope the writers appreciate the heavy burden of responsibility on their shoulders for making sure the ending grips as well as the rest.
at the end of broadchurch I was very disappointed for it to have been a charact er that wasn't even given more than a few scenes and lines through the whole thing.
So the ending was a letdown rather than a surprise.

Indianashopgirl · 07/12/2014 19:58

Agree that Mark has some involvement although I believe it to be legitimate.
Maybe he was undercover ... That's the most likely.

Phew, only just watched the most recent episode so am now able to join the thread and all your bonkers theories (all better than mine, I might add). Marking place here and going back to read through. Meanwhile, here's this...

Hope it's not gearing up for a 'Ollie was taken to Morocco/abroad' and Baptiste and Tony go on the trail there if there is a second series.

Agree! But I don't think that's very likely, as this was originally intended as a single series. And the (few) interviews with cast and writers have all said there will be resolution in the last episode of this series. There haven't been any hints of what the solution will be, just that there will be one and that it will fit.

(BTW: this is the spoiler-free thread. I'm not sure whether 'odds' (if you mean bookies' odds count as spoilers, but I do remember that we nearly lost posters in earlier bits of the thread because info beyond discussion of what had been shown so far was creeping in. Do people think it's best to stay on the restrictive side on this thread? It is why the SPOILER FRIENDLY thread was set up)

Lolly12 · 08/12/2014 07:21

Sorry for linking to a Daily Mail article. It contain 'odds' on who dunnit but think these are just plucked from the air rather than meaning anything.

Have reported my post and will move to spoilers thread.

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 07:25

If they're DM, plucked out if thin air "odds", not bookies' odds, then I don't think that would count as a spoiler (couldn't tell from what was posted before). My apologies.

Lolly12 · 08/12/2014 07:33

No worries!

Still reported it just in case anyone would prefer not to see it. But if you do, just google 'the missing daily mail'!

gazzalw · 08/12/2014 07:52

Well, I've never been so impressed by amateur sleuthery, as on here! It's almost more compelling than the series itself!

FWIW, if you go on the theory that it's usually the least suspected character, it's going to be Mark and/or Baptiste who reveals themselves to be heavily involved.

I totally agree that Mark is not what he seems, although he's evidently not been the direct focus of suspicion as the series has progressed (thus far). I suspect all that will change on Tuesday though...

EauLittleRougeofBethlehem · 08/12/2014 08:47

I've got the Tea and Kittens DM blocker installed so I can't see the article anyway Grin

I think I will miss this thread more than the actual show.

I've stuck with this for 7 episodes getting more and more confused. Now I'm on holiday abroad and will miss the conclusion!
Hoping that one of you will post a summary on Wednesday morning for me to read on my iPad.

Sheitgeist · 08/12/2014 09:51

There have only been 6 episodes so far, story , not 7; watch the other 2 on iplayer when you get back!

Baptiste really can't have been involved: he was called in from outside of the area to work on the case in 2006 because he was some sort of legendary super sleuth (and to give us female viewers of a certain age something to stay tuned for), so wasn't in Chalons du Bois at the right time. He was at home minding his bees.

It must all hinge on that missing evidence of Ziane's that that evil journalist pilfered. Also, Vincent Bourg has surely been in too many episodes to be a mere red herring?

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 11:15

34 hours to go!

As there are gangs and bosses involved (Caid/Romanian, Ian, possible French centred on Chalons) then there remains the possibility that the real villain of the piece was not at the pool, but instead directed minions. Or had minions who went out of control.

(And weren't the bees in 2014, not 2006? I think their significance lies in how Baptiste described his over-winter role for them was to provide the sugar water and warmth, so they could believe the world was OK during the freezing months, and safely re-emerge when all is sunny again).

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 11:16

(BTW, the early episodes which are no longer on iplayer are turning up on YouTube).

Sheitgeist · 08/12/2014 12:33

Duh me, yes the bees were in 2014!
Hadn't had enough coffee when commented earlier!

Baptiste still arrived in CDB after the event though. And I do hope someone is looking after his bees now that he's away!

I still have literally no idea whodunnit.

EauLittleRougeofBethlehem · 08/12/2014 12:45

I think Mark is involved and that it's a secret service op gone very, very wrong. They were trying to bust CDC and used James as bait, but they got Olleh instead. Mark is keeping schtum because his ex didn't know he was using James as bait and thought they were just going on holiday.

Can't wait until tomorrow night!

OP posts:
Sheitgeist · 08/12/2014 13:43

Interesting theory, Eau there's certainly something shifty about Mark.
But even if his involvement is only because of plans going wrong, would he really use his own child to lure a group such as CDB?
Would British police even be involved in a French undercover op?

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 13:43

is anyone else kid of bored and doesnt give a fuck?

try the legacy on sky arts - WAY better

AuntieStella · 08/12/2014 13:50

"is anyone else kid of bored and doesnt give a fuck?"

All the MNetters who don't post on this thread? I don't know if there's a Legacy thread already running where you could chat to like-minded fans of that programme, or if you'd need to start one.

.........

I think Mark has to be a policeman, because his role (where there is an international press pack) is just too high profile, and require police experience. But that doesn't rule out undercover work. Or him being a rogue cop in the pay of a pan-European criminal gang.
