re Malik blackmailing someone I guess we might find out in the last episode. That would make sense. Otherwise the whole thing screams of plot device.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2014 16:58

wondering if tonys job has anything to do with it, we dont know what he does, but was on holiday and had to take/make a phone call and got irrated

he obv has money, or did, now looks a bit scruffy and unkept

AuntieStella · 14/12/2014 16:58

Malik said something about his father being deeply involved in the Charmartaines case (and he certainly recognised Ziane on sight, and had his personal phone number rapidly). So I hope that aspect will be covered in the denouement. He said (I think in the car meeting with Ziane) that he was dream to this case. I hope it will be made clear why.

Malik also said (in the car) that "for me it's not over" or something similar. He saw it as a sign. He's driven in some way - something in his past.
Not long now.....

Fiderer · 14/12/2014 18:02

Ziane attacked Baptiste while Malik still had the evidence and was jailed for that and murdering his wife. Perhaps Malik knew he'd get in trouble if he handed the evidence in at that time for having accepted it from Ziane, who would also accuse him of blackmail.

Would certainly have threatened his career. He only gave it to Mark because Mark said he'd report him to the French authorities.

diddl · 14/12/2014 18:12

Thinking about it, if his dad had devoted a lot of time to the case & Malik could prove who Ziane/Carmantaine was what he had done, was he ever not going to turn him in??

Indianashopgirl · 14/12/2014 19:22

Well he did shop Charmantaines/ Ziane - as far as we know- by delivering the paperwork to Baptiste.

There is more to Malik's story, I'm sure. He is one bitter guy who is searching for some closure. IMHO

anonacfr · 14/12/2014 20:04

I clearly missed the dad connection. How was Malik's dad involved in a murder case in Morocco? Was that explained at all?

diddl · 14/12/2014 20:10

Actually I might be wrong.

I can't remember now if Malik said that his dad had been looking into a child(?) kidnapping, or a disappearance or what!Blush

EauLittleRougeofBethlehem · 14/12/2014 20:25

Wasn't it that Chamartaines was one of the investigating officers on the missing child case? And so Malik recognised Ziane when he saw him because of that.

SolomanDaisy · 14/12/2014 20:26

I'm pretty sure he said his dad had been looking into an unsolved murder in Morocco.

SolomanDaisy · 14/12/2014 20:31

No, Ziane was Charmartaine using a false identity. His son explained it all when they were asking him to visit the prison.

LauraPashley · 14/12/2014 20:31

Malik's dad had been looking into an unsolved murder in morocco, he told zianne that in the car, and also said that as soon as he saw him he knew who he was. He's beeh mysteriously saying Charmartaine or whatever it is to zianne since we first saw them meet, to prove what he has on him

LauraPashley · 14/12/2014 20:32

I agree re James. He was just shown to give us another reason why Emily might have ended up with mark

diddl · 14/12/2014 20:33

Unsolved murder.

yes.

which presumably was Ziane/Charmantaines beating his wife to death.

Indianashopgirl · 14/12/2014 20:34

Malik did say (in the car with Ziane with Ziane's 2 kids in the back),
that his Father had unfinished business - when he died. Malik felt that when he saw Ziane on TV in relation to the Oliver Hughes case that it was a sign.....
I thought at the time that the two of them had history . I thought that they had been together in some situation with Malik as the victim and Ziane as the aggressor but with subsequent episodes, I think I was wrong on that score.
I do believe that Malik has an agenda other than purely being a reptilian journalist out to make money on a book.

AuntieStella · 14/12/2014 20:37

Not exactly unsolved though, more that suspect had fled?

I thought we heard the story far too rapidly from Anouar, and am wondering if there is more to be told about Suri's past too, and what happened (and where). Malik Suri isn't a Morocaan sounding name, but I suppose that doesn't rule out his family having lived there.

Indianashopgirl · 14/12/2014 20:55

Agree AuntieStella I feel that is one of the keys to unlock at least part of the mystery.

LillianGish · 15/12/2014 07:37

Fayefruitloop I like your theory, but can't believe the encounter with Monique. Tony was randomly wandering around Paris, she was street artist with a pitch on a particular street. What are he chances he would have randomly walked past while she was there? Much less managed to talk him into bed in such a short space of time. On the other hand that whole scene was so random what was the point of including it at all if it was not significant? Actually I will feel a it swizzed if it turns out to be the case as so much more of this series has been believeable it will be disappointing to think it turns on such an unlikely scene.

Trunchbull · 15/12/2014 11:03

I'm thinking the Monique thing was to show Tony's unaccounted for time ie Baptiste saying "where have you been? Your phone was off" after Rini changed her mind about seeing her brother. It wasn't the only time Tony had unaccounted for time (when they wanted to show him video footage of the child in the window of the house, and 9 minutes after Olleh disappeared).

AuntieStella · 15/12/2014 12:19

I agree with the idea that there are periods of time unaccounted for (perhaps some gaps will be filled in?)

I also thought that it also showed that even when Tony was doing something totally random, the images of unhappy children haunt him everywhere.

Flibbertyjibbet · 15/12/2014 12:21

One more sleep!!!
I have my space on the sofa booked, phone will be left off the hook, mobile on silent, kids in bed and Dp banished from the room. I can't let him watch it as he's missed half the eps and keeps asking who people are then gets annoyed when I flap my hand at him in a shhhh manner....

Flibbertyjibbet · 15/12/2014 12:44

What ep was the artist in? Is it still on iplayer? I am inclined to think it was a random encounter to show that tony goes awl sometimes, that he has given up on relationships and doesn't realise he is still attractive and sexy: and finally I think all the face pictures are in her room to show that no matter where he goes or what he he does, he cant shake off the tragedy of leavibg his son and sees reminders everywhere.
I suspect I am training my mind to under-think things so that I won't be disappointed if the ending is a broadchurch damp squib.

Flibbertyjibbet · 15/12/2014 12:45

That should be tragedy of loosing his son not leaving.
