Thanks smurfing Smile

My soundtrack obsession is still going strong and Fuel to the Fire has currently leapt to number one fav. Stay has been relegated cos when I sing it to myself, for some reason it segues into a song from Les Miserables.

elsie3g · 06/11/2014 23:38

I think i've watched this series too many times....has anyone noticed the huge quantities of 'mirroring' between the characters, language and situation. I think it's one of the things that in a subtle way makes it resonate with us all. It's like an unwritten code...

There are so many instances it's hard to pick up on them all, but things that spring to mind are:

  • smurf/md/cj - asking each other at various times - are you ok?
  • Cj writing on molly's arm - sam writing on cj's arm
  • Bashira - molly describes her as being surrounded by soldiers (ep 2 i think) but smurf interprets this as his mother surrounded by soldiers
  • Ditto moments, obviously

there are loads more...see what we can dig out together!..too tired now!

In fact thinking about it, Tony Grounds both mirrors and joins together characters using similarities (i.e. how well and easily Smurf fits into Molly's family unit...And also seeks to show the differences between the characters and there upbringing...think how CJ would jar in this world...and Molly in his..

Molly is interesting in that she is not really try to move up the social ladder, but can and is, because she is a good student. She takes on board what people say and uses it - so from the outset when the 'major who deploys her to Afghan tells her to make an good impression, she then tries to do just that - reminding smurf when he's teasing her about their past (ep1).

She becomes conscious of her changing nature in ep3 when she goes home and explains to her mum how she's found someone who she can relate to, that he's someone she never imagined she would have anything in common with. Similarly, when she's speaking to her dad (same ep) she talks about being pulled up to the next level, this CJ too and also the army life that he represents. But it is also borne out also her growing self esteem and confidence - helped along by both CJ's and Smurf's belief in her.

Smurfingreat · 06/11/2014 23:42

Elsie, lots of stuff to think about in your post, but i had noticed that there is only one acceptable reply to "Are you ok?" - "Why wouldn't I be?". Heard from Mol, Smurf and CJ.

Smurfingreat · 07/11/2014 00:27

Last question for this evening - is it a bit weird to be lusting uncontrollably after a man in a hospital bed? Night, night and sweet dreams all.

icemist · 07/11/2014 06:33

Come back to me/you is used too
*Smurf uses is it in ep 1 "I'll come back to you" when he's in hospital
*CJ obviously in the infamous Rosabaya
*Belinda says "you've come back to me" when they meet at Brize Norton

I cant remember if smurfs mum says something similar. That's my revision for today :)

On the look for a nice photo to brighten our day ;)

icemist EVERYTHING about him is lovely! I was going to try to have a CJ free day but stuff it. What the hell!

orphan · 07/11/2014 08:10

Thanks icemist good choice. Now I can enjoy my brekkie (sadly not coco pops). He's wearing my fav clothes as well; it's something about the low slung belt...Blush

pixieg1rl · 07/11/2014 08:18

Obsession not waning. Started reading the scripts yesterday, watched a bit of ep4 & 5 yesterday and read the 2 new klipdoctor stories.
I got the DVD this week but waiting for the pilot DVD to arrive so I can watch the whole story from the beginning. OH is obsessively playing some game on the computer at night and I need a break from back to back Furchester.

Richtea19 · 07/11/2014 08:29

Thanks for the picture, lovely smile and possibly a bit of lip chewing? Phew......

I too was having a OG zone free day, (day out in London to the Spirit of Christmas) however ready early so might have a sneaky peek on tumblr for any new pictures, don't want to miss my train though.

I read Klipdoctors new story last night,it was beautiful. I hope he will continue with both of them. No pressure!

Because if live in "RichTea world" that's my imaginary world that everything is perfect (not) when I was getting ready this morning, I was thinking I wonder if I might bump into BA? Can't imagine he would be a Christmas show though. Might gonna have to go to a few bars tonight on the search!
I'm not helping myself am I?!

orphan · 07/11/2014 08:36

Richtea remember the possibility of BA sightings brings a whole new excitement to tube crushes Smile

Richtea19 · 07/11/2014 08:39

orphan, you have got me in a fluster now, more deodorant and lip gloss needed!

Beingfrank · 07/11/2014 08:39

I have re watched bits of 4 and 5 recently (all I can access on iplayer now!), and a couple of things have been bothering me that I wanted to mention:

Does anyone else thing that the ring is rather too impressive to be believable as Smurf's mum's engagement ring?

At the restaurant, when Molly says she can't "get a calmness in my night" - it seems a rather strange turn of phrase?

Bit random I know but these have been bothering me!

icemist · 07/11/2014 08:50

Richtea he follows a bar on twitter- might be worth a try?

The engagement ring is quite an up to date one, not one I'd expect from 20 odd years ago.

Richtea19 · 07/11/2014 08:58

Thanks Icemist will check it out! Only problem I see is that I might have to come clean to my RL friends!

monopod · 07/11/2014 09:10

Beingfrank I'd always thought she'd said 'can't get a calmness in my nut" but then realised that it said "nights" in the script. Sounds more Molly with 'nut'!

galaxy99 · 07/11/2014 09:20

Hi this is my first time on mumsnet, have been loving all the comments, glad I am not the only one that is obsessed. My attempt at an OG free day has already failed. As part of last night's intense study I noticed some more similar lines, in episode 4 CJ says to Molly "you can hate me if it helps," then in episode 5 at the hospital Molly says to Smurf "I understand if you hate me,". Also I was wondering if anyone thinks there are similarities between Molly and Bashira? Both of them haven't really been to school and both have been used by their fathers. Molly's dad (in the pilot) episode gets her to give him the wrong change in the nail bar and Bashira is used as a spy? Do you agree or am I just being a numpty?

orphan · 07/11/2014 09:36

Hi galaxy like you, it took OG to lure me out on to mumsnet. I agree Molly and Bashira share similarities. Molly def feels a kinship with her. I love the relationship between them and cried a little bit when they reunited at the end. Molly looked so happy to see her again.

icemist · 07/11/2014 09:38

Hi galaxy

I think Molly saw herself in Bashira and that is why she was so drawn to her.

Right, need to get on with my present shopping for Christmas

OP posts:
PassTheCremeEggs · 07/11/2014 09:43

Monopod and beingfrank - I think it's "nut" as well. It's weird, it's like the script was written by someone transcribing it from the program, rather than it being Tony Grounds' actual script?

There's another bit in that scene where the script has Molly saying "he (her CO) forwards me MOD trials and things I might be interested in." This doesn't make much sense and I think the word is actually "trawls" not "trials". The Army will trawl to fill a job that has come vacant and needs filling.

Odd!

firegirl · 07/11/2014 09:52

galaxy you are absolutely right about Molly and Bashira. I also remember in the pilot that Molly's father was pressuring her to marry a man she didn't want purely for his own interests and had in fact promised Molly to said man in the same way Bashira had been promised.
icemist I love that photo you posted this morning. I have it saved myself on various devices. I love watching the clip of it too, when he's smiling and walking backwards away from her; something really fanciable about the way he does that. (as there is about most things he does!)

mandy214 · 07/11/2014 09:54

Thought I'd lost you all Grin.

Have had a couple of busy days at work but managed to download new (publicity?) shot of BA posted a couple of mornings ago - OK, its not in uniform but its lovely.

Just had a message from amazon to say my DVD is arriving today, and I am going away for a girls weekend with someone who said last week she'd watched episodes 3 and 4 and thought it was fab. I told her she HAD to watch 1, 2 and 5 before we meet tonight and if she's not willing to indulge my obsession, it will be the end of a long friendship Grin.

snumpy · 07/11/2014 10:14

Just re read Klipdoctor's new chapter again. Have decided that I don't like Molly calling CJ 'Charlie'. It doesn't suit him. CJ or Charles certainly but never Charlie.

icemist · 07/11/2014 10:45

Flip it. On my own gonna watch all episodes.

monopod · 07/11/2014 10:46

PassTheCremeEggs I wanted to edit the scripts to 'correct' all the mistakes and add in the music cues Blush

These past couple of days coughweeks I have been mostly looking out for opportunities to quote OG lines at my unsuspecting loved ones. Used the stay focused, stay alert, stay alive one on my 6 yr old yesterday and am planning to buy Coco Pops and euphemise gaily with DH Grin
