Another rape scene that wasn't rape in the book Confused

TulipOHare · 22/04/2014 10:33

YY Ehric it wasn't, was it? They've kind of written themselves into a corner because in the book, Jaime and Brienne didn't get back till after Joffrey was dead, so the sex scene by his dead body was fuelled by the fact they'd been apart for so long. But in the show they brought him and Brienne back earlier, so he's been back for a while and Cersei has already rejected him, but they clearly wanted to shoehorn the sex-by-Joff's-corpse bit in anyway Confused which meant for their own internal consistency it became rape Confused

I normally take the differences between book and show in my stride, but this one annoys me because it's a wrecking ball in Jaime's character arc (one of my favourites in the books).

I'm just catching up, on last one of three. I intend doing more this afternoon. I love how your sympathies change, hated Theon for his treachery, but now I feel sorry for him. Waldur Frey is a cunt though.
(Is it just me or is Charles Dance rather hot as Tywin?)

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 22/04/2014 10:59

Yes, it's a really inconsistent bit of characterisation. Jaime risked his life to negotiate brienne's safety from rape, and flawed as he is he really loves cersei. To have him rape her just throws all his subtle character development into the bin IMO.

McFlurry · 22/04/2014 12:03

In the book, isn't that scene told from Jaime's PoV though. So, of course it wouldn't be rape according to his perspective.

The making of the TV show can't be from one person'a perspective so there's always going to be some artistic license employed

Still not sure that the scene was entirely necessary to be played as it was though.

TulipOHare · 22/04/2014 13:14

It was in his POV chapter, but it is still quite explicitly consensual going by Cersei's dialogue. There's an excerpt here .

The songs being played at both the red and purple weddings is the same. At the red wedding that seems to be the point that Catelyn Stark realises something is wrong.

Nunyabiz · 22/04/2014 17:41

Some very good observations here! Can't believe I didn't pick up on these

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 22/04/2014 17:45

The song is the rains of castermere. Cersei tells Margaery the story of house reine that was destroyed by the lannisters.

Vivacia · 22/04/2014 18:51

It is also the song that the two Lannister men are singing in the brothel, which Oberyn hears and leads to him going after them.

A quote which makes me smile is by Olenna at the Purple wedding, "I hope they play Rains of Castamere. It's been ten minutes since I heard it last; I've forgotten how it goes".

MikeLitoris · 22/04/2014 20:20

That's why it set alarms ringing for Catelyn.

Im watching last night's again.

worriedsick100 · 22/04/2014 21:58

few things then. Unless I am mistaken Oleanna said nothing to suggest she killed Joffrey or did I miss it? Do we know or are we supposed to assume it is Lord Baelish?

worriedsick100 · 22/04/2014 22:08

re watching series 3 episode 3 - in it Lord Bolton says his son arrived to find winterfell torched and everyone dead etc . Here is summary of it gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Sack_of_Winterfell In reality who did this - the ironborn or the Boltons? Why did Dagmer Cleftjaw betray Theon - I think he handed him over to Ramsay Snow even though all iron borns were then betrayed.

gingercat12 · 23/04/2014 18:21

The Rains of Castamere is a song about revenge and total annihilation of your enemies. It was also played at the end of the Bear and the Maiden Fair episode as well after Jaime rescued Brienne. You just know Locke is going to come to a sticky end.

worriedsick We are apparently supposed to believe that Lord Baelish's necklace contained the poison Confused

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 23/04/2014 20:18

Ramsay snow burnt winterfell. The iron born handed theon over to Ramsay in exchange for safe passage but they were executed anyway. They had no loyalty to theon and could tell the siege of winterfell was going to last too long.

McFlurry · 23/04/2014 20:37

The Rains of Castamere also featured in the Battle of Blackwater episode (season 2). It's sung by Bronn and the Lannister army before the battle and then plays over the end credits.

Infernal · 23/04/2014 21:01

I so loved Joffrey getting his..... Been waiting months for him to get topped.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 23/04/2014 21:03

But poor Tyrion. The Boltons are scum, no?

TulipOHare · 23/04/2014 22:22

The Boltons are scum, no?

Yes Grin

Ramsey is even worse in the books Shock

OP posts:
IdaBlankenship · 24/04/2014 14:47

How could Ramsey be worse Shock. Seriously, even by GoT standards he is a total shit.
I am hoping that somewhere in the depths of Tywin's cold heart, he feels enough love to save Tyrion - he doesn't actually believe that Tyrion did it, surely he could find a better fall guy.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 24/04/2014 14:49

He's more physically disgusting in the books. And there is the small matter of his wife...

MikeLitoris · 24/04/2014 14:59

I find Ramsey Snow so uncomfortable to watch. It's great acting.

worriedsick100 · 24/04/2014 15:08

What do we think Tyrion will be killed for Joffrey's death? I had not even considered that - it would be so detrimental to my love of the show! Grin

TunipTheUnconquerable · 24/04/2014 15:13

IME, GRRM kills off important characters, but he doesn't tend to kill off interesting characters. On that basis Tyrion ought to be safe to the end of book 7 Grin
Anyway, if he kills Tyrion, half of us will stop watching.

IdaBlankenship · 24/04/2014 15:15

Ehric Tell me more about his wife... (unless there is a chance of spoiler-iness)

Worried I agree - if they kill him off I would have to flounce (and then slink back in as I couldn't bear not to know how it ends) Grin
