It's a bit soon for me to have an opinion yet, but it looks interesting enough that I'm recording it to watch later with DH...

OP posts:

Free prequel chapter for Kindle on Amazon! I don't know whether I want to read it or whether it will spoil it though!

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 11/06/2013 10:36

yes Abra1d I like the idea that Victor and the dam are some how connected

spiderlight · 11/06/2013 10:37

Hang on...that might not actually be the same 'The Returned' at all! Blush

aliasjoey · 11/06/2013 10:57

I love the idea of the twins identity-swap, but I don't think it holds up: Camille when she returns is completely normal as 'Camille'. She answers to that in the bath (or rather, corrects her dad who calls her Lena) and she goes to bed in her own room, after complaining that someone has moved all her stuff.

Would somebody please tell me what happened in the first 10 minutes, as it is obviously pivotal! With the barmaid and Camille's dad?

Also why did Simon go to the cemetery ? I thought he didn't know he was dead?

To whoever said it's a bit like the Sixth Sense - I told DH it reminded me of M. Night Shamalayan films...

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 11:00

i was wondering if Mr Costa was involved in the building of the dam or something? seems odd that two random hydro engineers would know his name, even in such a small town?

Abra1d · 11/06/2013 11:05

Good point--perhaps he was the engineer who designed or it something.

Spero · 11/06/2013 11:19

As I am 'working from home' I had the opportunity to watch it AGAIN yesterday as I had missed the first five mins, which were actually quite crucial.

I agree with those who say the barmaid must be a medium - Lena's friend in the bar commented that it was the 'third time that week' her dad had been seeing her and the other bloke told him to shut up you knob, so obviously it was a sensitive subject for Lena and I agree it is a bit wild even for the French to have dad so casually visiting local prostitute in view of his daughter at the bar.

Brilliant suggestion that Mr Costa is something to do with the dam, didn't even think of that, but why else would he come back to the dam to kill himself?

Spero · 11/06/2013 11:21

My guess re Simon is that he simply worked it out - he died in 2002, presumably he just 'woke up' thinking it was 2002 but it is immediately obvious that so much has changed - Adele doesn't live in her old flat but in a new house and suddenly has a child.

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/06/2013 12:05

Oooh!

I am wondering if there is any significance to the fact that all the houses appear to be new! Could 'original' town/village have been submerged when dam was built, maybe that was when Victor died (would account for his old fashioned dress).

I don't think the murdered girl was a medium, not sure if she is a returnee - we will know depending on whether her body is found or not, because if she was a returnee then she would disapparate, like Mrs Costa.

Liking the 'end of days' thing!

C'est trés creepy!

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/06/2013 12:40

I'm liking the theory of victor drowning in the damn years ago

Small town sure folk would know mr costa - hence the engineers knowing him

Def think a medium rather then a Prosser as she says doesn't always work/happen to the dad or something like that - she wouldn't say that to him if he couldn't get it up Grin

Watched it again and will keep all episodes so can refer to them if needed till finished

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/06/2013 12:43

Must not Wiki. Must not Wiki...

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 11/06/2013 12:52

I've got a theory about why Simon knows he's dead....maybe he killed himself? If he did then surely when he returned he was already aware of his own death, him being the one who carried it out (rather than it being an accident).

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 12:56

ooooh yes re submerged town. i return to my earlier point about dams scaring the shit out of me.

BirdyBedtime · 11/06/2013 13:13

Oh, only watched because my DSis mentioned it ... and I'm hooked. Definitely something odd about the whole town - I wondered whether they are actually all dead (flooded out before the dam was build??)and expected to return, but don't think their reactions bear that out. I missed the underpass bit as DD was unwell and got up but by the sounds of it I'm glad I did.

I am trying very hard not to google as I've already spoilt the end of Nashville for myself!!

FairyJen · 11/06/2013 13:14

Dp reckons something in the water has infected all of the town as they don't react "normally"

Take Simon for eg. Dp says if he came back and found I'd moved out with no explanation and then he found me tryin on a wedding dress etc. he would not leave until I'd spoken to me.

Likewise if dp came back after 10 years I'd be out there with my shovel aiming for his head al la walking dead! Our episode woul be over and do e with within 10 min Grin

teejwood · 11/06/2013 13:30

Cuppa - I did wonder that about Simon. In the opening credits there is a couple lying on the grass, kissing. The camera pans to two wooden crosses, side by side - one of which has flowers on top. I wondered if that was a clue that it was supposed to be a suicide pact but that when Adele found out she was pg she couldn't go through with it? And that's why he's so angry - she didn't keep to her side of the "deal"?

teejwood · 11/06/2013 13:31

Fairy liking your very non-delicate fairy approach to zombie DH Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:31

oooooooooooooooh.

also. they make the electricity fritz. what's that about? water?

spiderlight · 11/06/2013 13:36

I think Victor is something to do with Simon and Adele - didn't he go to the flat where Adele used to live, or is that coincidence because he followed Julie home? Maybe Victor is Adele's baby with Simon?

teejwood · 11/06/2013 13:41

but... but... but... they don't always make all lights fizz - it seems to be hit and miss. IIRC the underpass lights didn't go out when Serge attacked Lucy and nor did the streetlights go when Victor was following Julie back from the bus to her flat! Annoying when it's not consistent if that is supposed to be an indication that one of them is nearby!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:45

yup, i thought that too.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:45

unless they fritz at the exact moment that someone reappears elsewhere?

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 11/06/2013 14:13

ohhh suicide pact - I like it

Abra1d · 11/06/2013 14:15

'i return to my earlier point about dams scaring the shit out of me.'

Yes. At best they are rather melancholy places. I always think of what was submerged to make them.

encyclogirl · 11/06/2013 14:41

I cant stop thinking about this show. I am so creeped out and enthralled all at the same time.

What's the deal with Mr Costa? Who the hell is Victor? Will Lucy come back from the dead? Will Mr Costa?

Cant wait till next Sunday!
