I'm gripped by this series.
I love the GA character, although tough female cop thing is hardly new I think the particulars of her character are interesting, well drawn and excellently portrayed.
I really like the relationships between the women in the series. The pathologist and GA having s shared understanding whilst being utterly professional.
I also did not interpret the police women's emptying of GAs bin and telling her as blackmail; I interpreted it as a shared understanding between them that GA's personal life was no one elses business and she was helping her maintain privacy without judgement. That's why GA promoted her. I thought their relationship is interesting as women's friendships, professional support and admiration is rarely depicted in drama. These types of relationships between women are just not usually part of drama.
I Find the killers character more problematic. I think his broody intensity and his lack of empathetic engagement unsettlingly, but he is meant to be a loving husband, father and a counsellor?? How come his wife, kids, colleagues and clients have not noticed that he hardly says 2 words or notices or cares whether theyre there or not?? His wife (until the last episode) carried on like they were the happiest little family ever apparently unaware that he was like a piece of cold stone! He's the most unlikely counsellor.
I think they needed to mark the differnce aspects of his character more clearly, show how he can pretend to be all these things without any of it being real. He seems to go around acting like a creepy serial killer all the time without any one noticing and all thinking he's a nice guy. That doesn't quite work for me.
I thought the scene in the last episode where the cop shot himself in front of his boss, was just brilliant. The realisation, slowly, as the scene built that he was either going to shoot his boss or himself, and then the shock on his bosses face, I felt really portrayed a realistic and therefore shocking actions to a shocking event. Like the boss at the start at that scene there was no indication that was going to happen, so we were feeling the shock the boss was experiencing.
And then GA rushing in being the one who did what needed to be done. Fab.
Also Aitch, telling people what doesn't happen is a spoiler.
