Are you looking forward to the new series starting soon?

I can't wait!

TheNightWatch · 14/06/2012 20:43

I knew they would make it into a series. When does it start?

Itsgottabebags · 14/06/2012 21:00

I think around the 25th of this month. Think it's a two episode series!

I loved it last year.

OP posts:
KalSkirata · 14/06/2012 21:20

what channel?

FrillyMilly · 15/06/2012 08:57

I can't wait for this! I loved it last time. Is it only two episodes though?

Itsgottabebags · 15/06/2012 20:43

ITV.

Yes I think so. It was only had one episode last series!

MaeMobley · 15/06/2012 20:56

I loved it but Jewish relatives were embarrassed by it.

Itsgottabebags · 15/06/2012 21:31

Mae-can I be nosy and ask why.

I am very interested in Judaism so this is a programme I like for information.

OP posts:
MaeMobley · 15/06/2012 21:35

I think they were worried that people would think that all Jews are like that. If I remember right there was a very observant family on there. Most Jews I know are nowhere near that observant.

Itsgottabebags · 15/06/2012 21:46

There was, I would say, a concentration on the modern orthodox family.

Mrsjay · 15/06/2012 21:52

I enjoyed it last time it was on such a lot of things I didn't know like the older lady who wore a wig to the 2 cookers in the kitchen , I think its first week in july its on . I do understand that no every jew wil be as observant as that mae Smile

TheNightWatch · 15/06/2012 21:53

My Jewish friends dont like it either and they are mainly observant. I really enjoyed it preferred it to that Gypsy wedding rubbish. Are you sure its itv, I wouldve thought it was more Channel 4?

Mrsjay · 15/06/2012 21:54

no ITV they have an advert running at the moment

MaeMobley · 15/06/2012 21:56

I think it's the worry that these jews seemed like caricatures. I thought Bernette Clarke (the orthodox mother & wife) was lovely.

Stuff like tearing the toilet paper before shabbos did make me laugh. I have never ever met anybody who does that.

Itsgottabebags · 15/06/2012 21:57

Starts the 26th of June!(Date from the SK Twitter account)

Maybe this series will contrast more between more/less orthodox. I thought it was a nice introductory programme. There was prog on BBC 2 called Two Jews on a Cruise that I would have liked to watch buy the Iplayer thing didn't work for this programme. I only saw a little of it!

OP posts:
MaeMobley · 15/06/2012 22:23

I missed Two Jews on a Cruise.

Itsgottabebags · 15/06/2012 22:36

It looked good! There was decrotive towel folding on the cruise Grin

I think it was a follow up concentrating on one of the chracters that the director previously interviewed for a previous documentary about the jewish community in London (orthodox)

FrillyMilly · 16/06/2012 08:37

I don't think it showed just orthodox last time. It showed the very camp man who owned the clothes shop. He wasn't orthodox cos he opened on the sabbath. He also held a Bollywood themed bar mitzvah. It showed the modern orthodox woman who was very observant (did she convert when she married?). It also showed the man who had come over after the holocaust and built up his own very successful business. Then it also showed some of the very orthodox (sorry I can't remember what they are called) but they cover up a lot and wear hats.

I think that was a good mix of Jewish people. Obviously if they showed most Jews it wouldnt be very interesting.

TheNightWatch · 16/06/2012 18:13

I still can't get over that camp shop owner being straight and married. He was like Liberace.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/06/2012 18:21

Just seen a trailer for it, can't wait!

limitedperiodonly · 16/06/2012 18:37

I initially liked Bernette but ended up hating her. She was very childish and manipulative. Reminded me a lot of an ex-boyfriend's mother, though she wasn't orthodox. I think it's a role that a lot of mothers carve out for themselves because it's the only power they have. Pity they don't seek something more constructive but I can see how it's difficult to make a stand in such a tight community. It's just Jewish women btw but Bernette did set herself up for it and seemed very proud of her behaviour.

I liked the camp guy despite finding a bit wearing at times. Not entirely convinced, but if that's the way he gets by, then it's okay by me.

The Holocaust survivor had me in tears and from what I remember was proud of his traditions but seemed flexible with his grandson's desire to be himself. I'm sure the boy will always be a Jew but his granddad seemed to believe there was no need to sweat it.

Maybe younger generations are going to be more sensitive than people who've been through it. Like I'm more observant of Remembrance Day than my dad who was fighting and my mum who was waiting for him to come back.

Itsgottabebags · 22/06/2012 23:40

OOH Monday ,nine PM. Hope its gonna be good!
