UnnamedFemaleProtagonist speak as you find, I always say.

Yes, I am watching it but was drawn in by the lovely Jack. And joel who seems a nice boy.

Popped out, thank you, I thought they might be I saw the man on yesterday's program making the tiny scrolls and wondered what they were for.

Yes the scrolls were probably for tefillin or for a mezuzah (the boxed mentioned last night that are placed on door frames)

limitedperiodonly · 26/06/2012 21:30

mrsmicawber what is Joel like?

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 21:31

I am on the verge of tears at Jack's story.

I could imagine Joel being really fun to be around. He comes across as very warm and sweet somehow. I just want to throw my arms round Jack and hug him. There's a guy who lives near me who is a survivor and he has taken lots of groups to Auschwitz to tell them what happened. I guess going back time and time again is like therapy for him. It must take such strength to do that though.

PatsysPyjamas · 26/06/2012 21:35

I really like this programme, wish it was not just a two-parter. I am not Jewish but live within an orthodox Jewish area, which I feel is quite closed off to me. I am fascinated and probably spend loads of time staring at people, desperately wanting to ask loads of questions!

nancy75 · 26/06/2012 21:36

I don't know how jack has the strength to go back there.

limitedperiodonly · 26/06/2012 21:37

MrsM there has to be another wedding!

Caerlaverock · 26/06/2012 21:41

I find the flicking between the holocaust survived weeping and Bernette Gurning discomfiting. Also the young rabbi is a dick. Like the clothes shop guy

MaeMobley · 26/06/2012 21:41

I am now watching the second episode. I do find it uncomfortable viewing. I feel very protective of them, not so much Bernette, I think she enjoys the limelight. But the others, I don't want them to expose themselves to ridicule.

I think Joel & the young rabbi are very sweet.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 26/06/2012 21:43

My Jewish friend just texted me (we live in this area) saying "Joel is a twat". Grin

I used to buy all dd's clothes in Mon Amie before her brothers came along and we became skint.

poppedoutforapintofmilk · 26/06/2012 21:43

I think the Jewish community is very insular patsy Bit like the Muslim one. Sad that because it's lovely when we all know something about each other.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 26/06/2012 21:45

Bernette tells anyone that will listen that she is the star of the show. Check out her twitter profile!

nancy75 · 26/06/2012 21:46

Mae, what do you think would expose them to ridicule? I am not Jewish and think it shows Jewish people in a really good light. I live in a very non Jewish part on London and my only experience of Jewish people is seeing the orthodox men in black coats & hats, to an outsider they always look really stern and serious, so I have really enjoyed seeing what a lively vibrant community these people have, which is not what I expected.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 26/06/2012 21:49

Not many of my Jewish friends/clients think it gives an accurate portrayal of 'normal' life. Bernette and Joel are fairly extreme.

poppedoutforapintofmilk · 26/06/2012 21:50

I could imagine Bernette really being a diva about her appearance on this! Shame Joel is a twat as well!LOL Oh dear. It's just Jack then. The rabbi comes across as a bit of an odd chap. Him and his new wife seem an unlikely couple. She seems pretty normal bless her.

nancy75 · 26/06/2012 21:52

Tv companies are always going to pick more extreme characters, but it is really interesting to see the traditions and customs, because it's just not something I would ever see in real life

I'm fairly au fait with the customs as some of them affect my work. It has been a 'spot the person you know' night tonight, there have been many. (not watched it properly yet, just in and out)

MaeMobley · 26/06/2012 21:57

Nancy, I don't quite know. I just don't viewers to get either a bad impression of Jews & to generalise based on few examples in the programme.

I myself spend my time mocking other Jews so expect others to do it too.
