Are you looking forward to the new series starting soon?

I can't wait!

He is SO camp. And he keeps going on about how he is not religious but he is way more observant than we are.

MsFanackerPants · 25/06/2012 21:52

I'm incredibly awkward about this. I'm not Jewish, DP is and we're in Manchester, his family is from Prestwich and we do recognise some of the people. It would have been nice to see some Reform or Liberal Jews on this,

MaeMobley · 25/06/2012 21:54

I agree MsF.

I'm loving it. Confusing though. Grin

MaeMobley · 25/06/2012 21:59

Tough, no! Liberal Jews have female rabbis. Liberal jewish weddings would not segregate men and women. Although she does not wear a wig, she dresses in an orthodox way.

Jack, the Holocaust survivor, had me in tears.

MsFanackerPants · 25/06/2012 22:29

Ah, well DP's family are pretty calm, although bonkers in their own way. Certainly don't gatecrash weddings! Or tell shops to close on Saturdays. I don't think they'd make very viewable tv, (although DP's mum could definitely be on How Clean is Your House or a hoarder programme).

Bernette is a receptionist at the hospital DP was at earlier in the year. She noticed his surname and was trying to work out if she knew him. He said she was clearly desperate to ask if he recognised her from TV. As it happens, we know the producer of the programme which made her very very excited too!

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 06:52

I watched it and was sorry that I didn't get to see more of Jack. I was so upset at watching him describe what he'd gone through.

For those on Twitter some of the cast are on should you want to follow them.

Bernette is a hospital receptionist?

I bet that waiting room is a joy.

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 08:41

Its on tonight again.

All in all I enjoyed last night's SK, despite feeling a bit embarrassed re Bernette coming across as the stereotypical Jewish mother with one hand stirring an industrial vat of chicken soup and the other pointing at the 3,000 pictures of her grandchildren. I don't know anyone as observant as her and Joel and family are more representative of those I know. I think it gave a taster of Jewish traditions, values, heritage, devotion to family etc. For me it was 100% better than Jews on a Cruise which I found so utterly cringe-making I couldn't watch. From the 5 mins I saw, I just hoped to goodness that no-one thought the bickering, uber irritating couple on that were representative of the average Jewish couple. I thought the concept and the title too were very patronising and distasteful.

I do think there is a distinct Jewish way of speaking/accent that has a tendency to make some guys sound camp even if they're straight. It's v v strange. I can tell if someone is Jewish just by their voice. I'm totally unreligious, was brought up by orthodox but atheist parents but think I sound very Jewish. I know a lot of Jewish guys who sound like Joel too!!!! Eeeek!LOL

Jack was so touching. Made me cry too. He reminded me of my grandpa.

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 18:01

popped I wanted to watch Jews on a cruise because it was a follow up to another BBC doc that the couple featured in which if you didn'd see might be worth a look. It was part of the Wonderland series too and was interesting as it featured someone who was orthodox yet had been to prison for something which I can't quite remember.

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 19:01

MMit showed the man (who'd been to prison) going to a matchmaker for his son and telling them about prison and how that could affect his son's chances of a match I think. It was interesting.

TheNightWatch · 26/06/2012 19:03

I never like Jews on a Cruise at all.

I enjoyed the first half of last nights. I think Joel is a camp straight man. I remember my local Greek hairdresser and his wife were exactly the same. She was a real glamour puss and he was as camp as Christmas. Its the same with that couple in Real Housewives of New York incase any of you are like me and watch shite as well as quality

I know someone who knows Bernadette very well and said she is exactly like that in rl.

Im not looking forward to watching dear Jack tonight. I watched the other documentary he did about the same thing. I thought he had been to Poland in that too? I dont know but it will be harrowing.

I did like the look of that curry house they were in. Proper grub Smile

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 19:26

Night what other doumentary was Jack featured in?

I didn't see all of JOAC but it, to me at least, did look interesting. Like I said in my previous post the couple in it were featured in another Wonderland documentary.

TheNightWatch · 26/06/2012 19:44

He was in a documentary about two years ago about orphans of the holocaust. How they managed to avoid the gas chambers and how the ended up in the uk. I imagine you will get a feel for it tonight. I don't know if I can bear to watch it again.

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 21:15

Watching SK part two now.

OP posts:
poppedoutforapintofmilk · 26/06/2012 21:17

So far tonight's episode more informative I think. I agree night it's almost unbearable watching Jack visit Poland. It makes me feel so lucky that my Grandparents' families managed to leave Russia and Poland before the war started. Jack is proof that you just cannot get over such trauma. It makes me so sad that genocide is still sometimes ignored as in Rwanda. To me if international communities stamped on it wherever it started at least some good would have come out of the Holocaust. I shouldn't think there is one family in Rwanda who hasn't lost someone. itsgottobe I watched the series that the couple who then featured in 2 jews on a cruise were in and that was interesting but I couldn't believe how irritating the latter was.

nancy75 · 26/06/2012 21:19

Can anyone tell me, what are the square little box things the men were wearing on their foreheads? It was when they were praying.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 26/06/2012 21:24

I know Bernette in RL. I have nothing nice to say so won't say anything at all.

limitedperiodonly · 26/06/2012 21:25

phylacteries. they contain extracts from the Torah

poppedoutforapintofmilk · 26/06/2012 21:25

nancy they're called teffilin and they contain scrolls from the Torah (the Jewish holy book). They are are just worn by men and are to remind them that God saved the Jews by taking them out of Egypt. Weird things!!!!

MaisieM · 26/06/2012 21:25

The boxes are called tefillin
