She found the toggle on Alice's grave. Olive put it there after finding it in ashes after her mum burned Alices's coat.

fifitot · 25/02/2011 10:12

Yes she had the toggle. The issue of her coat has been discussed alot. She kept asking where the coat was when the body was found and noone seems to know. It is clear it was at Olives house and her mum was burning it! I think little Olive took the toggle and put it on Alice's grave as a way to try and tell what happened. She had been told not to say anything by her mother who had been having an affair with Ruth's FIL. The girls were playing together while he was with the mother, that is when Alice drowned.

Well that's what I think happened - though is probably more complicated than that.

FrottageCod · 25/02/2011 10:19

The toggle was in the remains of the dufflecoat bonfire, made by Olive's Mother, which 60's olive kept, and it later appeared on the grave in the same way that the cross and chain did. I can't even get my head round some of the posts above never mind the plot itself!

I wonder if next weeks episode will show how the '80s family came to move out. Or any of them for that matter.

FrottageCod · 25/02/2011 10:20

oops - too slow thinking about what to put!

FrottageCod · 25/02/2011 10:21

What was the reason FIL gave for not keeping a proper eye on Alice...gawd, only watched it yesterday and can't recall.

riojaguzzler · 25/02/2011 10:23

Good work Fifi on that website!!

?You think I really didn?t know??

â–º ?Think about what would happen if this came out.?

This could be the conversation Olive and Ruth have when it emerges Olive's mum was having an affair with FIL. I think he'e Olive's dad. Still think Olive and Alice were playing together when he was with Olive's mum....

But what would happen if 'this came out'?

Curiouser and curiouser...

PortBlacksandGinLane · 25/02/2011 10:24

He says the dog ran off and he told Alice to stay where she was in the lane and wait for him. Next thing he knew she had drowned.

Ruth thinks something must have happened as she 'was a good girl and would have stayed where she was and not wandered off'

PortBlacksandGinLane · 25/02/2011 10:26

Apart from the fact that the first rule of drama /soaps is that no one ever tells anyone anything - there would be NO WAY the modern couple wouldn't find out form the village that a girl who lived there had drowned in the pond out the back.

This is village life we're talking about here....they'd be dining out on that one for years.

corygal · 25/02/2011 11:43

What if Olive's baby was delivered by Ruth - who had trained as a midwife - and then been given away, not died? He could be another character.

The FIL must have a large part to play in the final episode - no way would Denis Lawson appear in a minor role.

Do you think Alice will get increasingly malevolent in the final part?

lovecorrie · 25/02/2011 12:10

argh - stop it! My head is spinning!

ladela · 25/02/2011 12:16

Haven't read all the posts but I thought the same as Corygirl. When (present) Ruth first went back to the Marchlands she said she had a son - he hasn't been mentioned since. I thought maybe Olives son (who she thinks died) was actually taken by or given to Ruth. Maybe by FIL - as some sort of weird compensation for Alice's death

FooffyShmoofffer · 25/02/2011 12:22

lovecorrie agreed. Fried brain hereGrin

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2011 12:33

omg, you lot went totally in depth last night Grin

2010 dad is not 60's son (ie alices brother)

olive was same age as alice, and makes her 45ish in 2010 so faaaaaaaar older than 2010 dad who looks early 30's

he was being sneaky by meeting olive and why on eart buy the house whera girl went missing/drowned/murdered

@waves to piste' maybe she was drowned in bath, alice doesnt seem a very good girl at the moment by making brother have fits :(

surely the priest would know of the 60' and 80's familys who lived in marchlands, and any other people who lived there in the past 40yrs

'bangs blonde brain in puzzlement'

Emmanana · 25/02/2011 12:41

really must get a life I have now planned an indulgent afternoon on Monday re-watching the 1st 4 episodes, on sky+. Reckon if I skip the adverts it will only take 3.5 hours Grin to see if there's anything I've missed. Will try not to concentrate too hard on the ironing!
Well done to ITV for bringing us such a brilliant, gripping drama!

dmo · 25/02/2011 12:44

ladela did she say she had a son??? missed that bit

OP posts:
silverfrog · 25/02/2011 12:46

I missed that bit too, dmo.

will have to look it up on itv player Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2011 12:56

yes i thought ruth had a son, who at first i thought was 2010 dad, but obv he would know his own mother when she came to work for them

you can make each episdode into 43 mins so be just under 3hrs of tv for 4 episodes

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2011 12:57

'waves to silver frog'

silverfrog · 25/02/2011 12:59

hi Blondes, how's it going? am enjoying the break form the lanes for a while... Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2011 13:10

all fine, also enjoying a break from lanes, till monday lol

and yes often i start a programme 10/15mins on sky+ and then whizz through adverts Grin

starfleet · 25/02/2011 13:13

Thanks to all who cleared up my confusion about the toggle from Alice's coat!

Calico1 · 25/02/2011 13:16

I live in the village where Marchland was filmed ....actually right next to the churchyard where Alice is 'buried'. Been watching it for shots of our house but now completely absorbed by the plot - it's spooky enough living here without Alice's ghost next door Wink

Ormirian · 25/02/2011 13:18

Just had a quick look at ITV player to see whether all the episodes were still there. There is a warning about one sex scene and 'mild supernatural activity'. I can picture a polite and apologetic ghost approaching someone and clearing their throat gently before saying' Excuse me, would you mind if I just rattled these chains and said 'Woooo'? Thanks awfully'.

SeeJaneKick · 25/02/2011 13:22

Ooh is it an atmospheric place then Calico? I love the house they use for Marchlands...right up my street!

ladela · 25/02/2011 13:26

Yeah she definitely said she had a son when she introduced herself to the 2010 mum.
