Help my rabbit is giving birth to a surprise litter!

I had gone out to clean my rabbit out and had done half when I went to her bed and noticed she had pulled some of her fur out and made a nest. I put my hand in the fur and came across a baby so I withdrew my hand quickly and closed the box and ushered mum back inside her hutch. I've fed and watered her as normal and put in some extra hay but I'm at a loss at what I do now. This was at about 1pm and I've left her to it but I'm concerned I've done some damage by disturbing her. Does anyone please have any experience or advice on what to do now?

Are Mum and Dad still together? Or able to be together? I'm pretty sure it's possible for rabbits to become pregnant again very quickly after birth.

How old is mum?

Our vet told me that rabbits can get pregnant whilst they are pregnant. Store the eggs apparently.
Get the male away ASAP.

No advice. What a shock.

I would phone your vet and get their advice. And, errr, congratulations?

You say "my rabbit" as if you have just the one... Is she new to you and arrived pregnant?

We had this. Vet assured us they were sisters as pet shop said. 6 months later 7 baby rabbits. Here is my hard won knowledge

• get other rabbit away immediately. Ours got pregnant immediately despite us removing dad as soon as we saw the babies. Had to take mum to have abortion/ hysterectomy 3 weeks later tense as she was away from her first litter who were still feeding. I was terrified if she had not made it all the first litter would have died

• leave her alone with babies obv food and water. Just hope she is a good mum (ours was fantastic have heard other mothers let their babies die)

• one baby will almost always die so make sure you go to hutch before dc

• we gave ours away to friends and neighbours and the ones we couldn't place we gave to local rabbit centre to sell on

• after a few weeks they are super cute. But this is a hassle and a pain!

Ours did this when she got out, had relations with a wild bunny and sauntered back a few days later, up the duff.

Had no idea she was expecting until therecwas a nest with tiny naked bunnies in it.

I think we left her to it until the babies were not naked or blind anymore. She didn't attack them or anything when we accidentally disturbed her and we obviously made sure she had plenty of food and water.

My sons rabbit is male and mine is the female, I'm still a bit truamatised by it I think
Unfortunately the male can't be neutered because the vets tried and he died on the table but they managed to bring him back and so they couldn't do the op. I have been so good with keeping them apart until I can get her done in January but my son feeds them in the morning so he's obviously let them out together.
Never mind what's done is done.
Anyway they are apart of course and once weaned my little terror will be getting spayed asap.
I'm worrying like mad and would have liked to have bought her in but it's too late now.
I'm not even going to worry about re-homing them at the moment until I know they are ok.
I will of course take photos and post on here when I can.

I'm glad things turned out well for you mad as I'm so worried I've done something when I disturbed her but I've googled and lots of bunny breeders say it's fine and not to worry just leave her be but the vet said to leave her but be prepared for dead babies
I could never be a breeder this is just too stressful.

Mummy rabbit managed to get out her cage last night and couldn't get back in but I checked on the baby/babies quickly whilst she was distracted and whilst I couldn't see anything I could see the fur on her nest was moving so I've left her to feed it/them. Fingers crossed all is well.

This happened to us with our 2 'female' rabbits (thanks Pets at Home).

Our 2 had made a deep burrow so we didn't even know about their 7 babies until they all emerged one day at about 3 weeks old.

We were lucky in that there were no dead babies, the female had only one pregnancy and we had the male neutered with no problems.

No advice I'm just marking place to see the photos!

Yes I think there must be more buried in her nest because no way would one have stayed warm on its own all night. I promise I will post photos when I can see them. All I can see is Mum's fur moving about its quite funny.

Are baby bunnies called kits?

They are indeed called kits. I am sorry I will try and get a pic but I don't want to disturb her too much. Hopefully in a couple of days whilst she's having a run around the garden I can see inside her nest better.

Rabbit babies! I think there is 3/4 in the nest. I had to be quick because they get cold so easily. I've bought the hutch indoors as it's very brrrrr outside. In 10 days they should have their eyes open and by 2 weeks they should be up and about. Will get more photos as and when I can but I'll leave them to it for a couple of days now I'm happy there are no dead ones. It's easy to see they are ok though because if I shine a torch on the nest the babies move. So happy all is going well.
