Help my rabbit is giving birth to a surprise litter!

I had gone out to clean my rabbit out and had done half when I went to her bed and noticed she had pulled some of her fur out and made a nest. I put my hand in the fur and came across a baby so I withdrew my hand quickly and closed the box and ushered mum back inside her hutch. I've fed and watered her as normal and put in some extra hay but I'm at a loss at what I do now. This was at about 1pm and I've left her to it but I'm concerned I've done some damage by disturbing her. Does anyone please have any experience or advice on what to do now?
Thank you.

Oh so gorgeous!

MadHattersWineParty · 20/01/2016 13:07

Aw, I followed this from the start too.

They are beautiful bunnies!

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 13:12

Mummy bunny can now open hutches 😳 I've just walked in to find her in daddy's hutch. I shall have to try and get dad neutered next week oops.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 13:50

Eh? I thought Dad rabbit was un-neuterable ?

TBH , I'd get MummyBunny spayed asap. The horse might've already bolted on that one leaving the stable door wiiide open Shock

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 14:01

I've just spoken to the vet and they said its always a risk and they will check him over before to make sure he stands the best chance. I can't get all the girls done at once as that would be £300 so he's the practical choice. He could impregnate all 4 of the girl babies if he carries on like this and he's started attacking my dogs and trying to mate with them which they do not like so its either go for the op or re-home him.

There's 4 to choose from but only 3 available. My nieces friend will choose next week.

I rang the vets again as I'm worried and they have requested his old vets notes. They will read them over and let me know what they think but they said its so quick now and they aren't under for long so even though he had issues before it doesn't mean he will have this time as he's stronger now but armed with the notes and a pre op they will make sure to do what's best for daddy.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 14:35

I would worry more about MummyBunny being pregnant again.
The fact she got out of her hutch and into his , could that indicate she's in season. It's not like she alone, she's got plenty of rabbit company.

I'd get down to B&Q (other homeware stores are available) and buy extra rabbit proof bolts too Wink

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 14:52

She's a bugger for getting out of her cage and has two catches on it already. Maybe a padlock? ☺️
I am concerned she could be pregnant but I'm hoping he wasted all his erm excitement for the new stuffed monkey I had put in his cage which he has been humping haha 😂
We will manage if she does turn out to be upduffed of course and it'll mean more baby bunny pics but fingers crossed she's not. Only 28/30 days to wait. On the plus side I could open a baby bunny petting zoo 😂

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 14:54

Oh and I've now put a very heavy box of books in front of the cage! Ha I would like to see her escape now as it takes a big shove to move it. ☺️

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 16:22

Rabbits do have a quick gestation compared to guineas (they are 63-70 days and get really tubby). I'm guessing your bunny didn't look pregnant as these bunnies babies were a surprise.

At least you know she didn't DTD after giving birth (my Guineas did, someone told my dad to "leave the boar in he won't harm the piglets". No, they don't harm them, they make more )

I have a large bolt and a metal bucket full of cement in front of our Pighouse, not so much to keep the pigs in , but to keep unwelcome visitors out ...yes cute baby foxie, I do mean you and your vermin friends Angry

fortifiedwithtea · 20/01/2016 16:22

How can you part with 'eyebrows' bunny Sad just teasing Grin is that one of the boys?

Eww bunny pleasure monkey and reaches for brain bleach. Bet Daddybunny still found the inclination to ensure there is another set of babies on the way though Wink

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 16:44

Ooh I would call Eyebrow Bunny "Dennis" (as in Healey (yes I am old )

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 17:50

I had no idea mummy was pregnant because she didn't show any signs apart from making a nest but she had done that before so I didn't think anything of it. Yes their gestation period is pretty quick. we have a Guinea pig but he hates other Guinea pigs and doesn't like mummy bunny but gets on with the babies really well. He was in their hutch today and they were all cuddled up, mummy comes in and he ran and hid under the hutch. Bless him. Yeah the monkey thing was a way of trying to stop him from mounting my dogs. The dogs totally freak out when he's in the room, they try and climb up me so I send them upstairs to sleep on my bed whilst dad roams around looking for an unsuspecting victim (usually a sleeping cat)
Haha Dennis 😂

SoupDragon · 20/01/2016 17:57

Get her a rabbit chastity belt :)

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 18:18

Oh I wish they did them 😂

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 19:03

Vets have confirmed dad can't be done unfortunately but with the money I have saved I can buy a huge hutch and run for him instead. He will live outside and the girls will live indoors. Best solution I can come up with.

MadHattersWineParty · 20/01/2016 19:31

Oh Lordy let's hope she's not up the spout again so soon, the babies are so sweet though.

Our boy bunny used to shag a football (he had free run of the garden) my little brother came home one day like Shock

We got him a neutered female for company and although they loved eachother she was not into coital relations.

So he went back to his football Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 20:21

I disagree and I might be talking crap because I dont keep rabbits but:

You have Dad Rabbit (who must stay entire) and you plan to spend ££ on a hutch and run to let him live in the garden (alone- ie not with rabbits though you have other animals)

You've got MumRabbit and possibly two daughter rabbits indoors.
Mum Rabbit could be pregnant again.

You will need to rabbit proof everything .

Does should be spayed to reduce the risk of uterine cancer anyway.
Bucks should be castrated to reduce antisocial behaviour and spraying.

So in theory you are spending £££ (hutch , run, three spayings + two lots of injections for your new bunnies)

I'd rehome the bunny babies while there's interest.
Spay MumRabbit (reduce her risks and prevent pregnancy)

Buy a huge safe run/hutch so she can live with the male.
Otherwise it seems a bit sad him being outside , them inside , look what you could've won

The adults are your priority, cute as the babies might be. They were here first.

And I'd never put any of my guinea pigs in a hutch of rabbits, guinea pigs can get killed by rabbits (even the RSPCA back that up and the Rescue I got my pigs from prohits the keeping of their pigs with bunnies)

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 20:48

The male will go outside for now. I will get all the girls done and then they will all go outside like they are supposed to be but I first need to wait to see if mum is pregnant again and if she isn't she will go outside in her hutch and then neutered end of February/beginning of March. The babies are not going outside until summer anyway. He will have a couple of months in his new run and then they can enjoy each other's company. The babies can be done at 6/8 months so they will be ready for summer and they can go outside too.

They only came in because it was easier for me to keep an eye on them.
The Guinea pig jumped in the cage with the babies, I didn't put him in there. I was watching the whole time. When mum came back he jumped out and hid under the hutch. He wasn't in any danger and I put him away after we had a cuddle.
I should have been more on the ball with regards to mum & dad but I had surgery only a week ago.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 21:23

Aye what's done is done.
Is there a morning after pill injection for rabbits (there is for dogs) it would be hard work for her if she raises another litter Bless Her.

Hope the surgery went well. Flowers

Mybunnyisamummy · 20/01/2016 21:32

I could bloody well kick myself believe me but like you say what's done is done. I told the vet everything and she didn't mention anything about a morning after pill but I am speaking to her tomorrow anyway so I shall ask.
Surgery went brilliantly thanks it's the recovery which seems to get harder and harder the older I get. I just don't bounce back like I used to and this time my head is killing me even with painkillers. All normal though apparently. Give me a week and I'll be fighting fit I'm sure, better be as I need to exercise asap ☺️ still carrying a bit of holiday weight hehe too much of this Cake
