Aren't M&S clothes shite at the moment?

Going to a party tomorrow. I have something to wear, but ended up with a couple of hours spare and decided to go and shop for something new. Nearest place with easy parking is a big M&S.

My God, how dreary are their clothes?! Shitey McShite of Shitesville.

Who buys all that stuff?

I was so disappointed not to be able to spend any money. I went round twice, in disbelief, convinced I must have missed all the nice stuff.

MSB, are you me?

I HATE new houses! Don't these people own books? A hoover? Suitcases??

Yup, it's all in the hype and marketing. I admit, I do like my 'brands', in clothes, skin care etc but I can afford it and I do supplement my purchases with lots of 'stealth' ones from non-hyped brands that are every bit as good.

My 30 quid Boden 'pull ons' lie gathering dust while I float languidly around my house in adorable light cotton 'shabby chic' PJ bottoms that I got for 4 quid in Primark.

I've often wondered how people apply trousers to their legs without pulling them on but for some it seems to be a unique selling point and I too bought in to it.

(should say the Boden mens pull ons are fab, my DP had 4 pairs and looks hawt in all of them)

This is about the only thing I've really loved at M&S this summer (apart from the £12 jeans). Even DD approves of it.

Otherwise, I've just been glad that we've just had a branch of Wallis open in town.

MorrisZapp · 11/07/2009 15:11

I hope you got that, my primark Pj's are ADORABLE do you hear me?

A-fucking-DORABLE

at self and bizarre italicisations...

MorrisZapp · 11/07/2009 15:13

Ooh that top is v chic, Rusty

MrsSeanBean · 11/07/2009 15:13

I am being really strict with myself at the moment (Mulberry excepted ) and trying to filter out all the marketing (not easy). I was so cross with myself for buying a White Stuff dress the other day. (a) I am not languidly wandering around a sunny harbour like the model and (b) it makes me look like a pregnant pig on 2 trotters.

MorrisZapp · 11/07/2009 15:21

lol. My mum has similar attitude to all hyped 'wrap dresses' which she swears make her look like a 1950's Glaswegian washerwumman.

MrsSeanBean · 11/07/2009 15:21

Yes nice top Rusty!

Not much to dislike here either. Looks like the Boden one I paid £45 for 6 months ago.

This is ok too, again maybe without the belt.

MorrisZapp · 11/07/2009 15:26

There's an even more Bodenesque denim skirt in M&S, I saw it. It had white stitching and looked so this season.

I have billions of denim skirts but otherwise would have been v v tempted.

Also I saw denim knee length shorts, v v Boden, but I'm not a shorts girl.

Swedes · 11/07/2009 15:42

v useful little cardi/jacket thing in pewter mettallic, great for layering

tunic, I wore mine last night with a little navy linen waterfall cardi over

navy blouse is absolutely divine on but looks crap on the hanger, looks great with jeans and Converse and a string of enormous pearls
They also do this blouse in silver and I am v tempted.

I also recently bought a navy blue and white patterned collarless tunic dress from Portfolio but I can't find it online. I wore it one day last week for a meeting in the City over navy linen trews with heels and I'm thinking of wearing it tomorrow to a barbeque over jeans with silver Converse.

MrsSeanBean · 11/07/2009 15:46

All sounds lovely Swedes!

Are your converse 'real' or M&S?

On a totally random note, I wanted some silver pumps from Toast see here in red but they all sold out really fast. Bizarrely they were further reduced this morning altough there's no stock.

moondog · 11/07/2009 15:51

Moprris, your mother is spot on about wrap dresses which look shit on everyone I think.

Emphasise enormous distance between waist and bottom of buttocks giving impression of vast rump, which is even worse when bisected by knicker elastic.

They are vile.

MorrisZapp · 11/07/2009 15:53

Loving the term 'useful' for clothes. I know exactly what that means in context.

mrsmaidamess · 11/07/2009 15:53

M & S stuff is always photgraphed so terribly on the website though. And they merchandise the stuff even worse.

MorrisZapp · 11/07/2009 15:55

Wrap dresses - same as low cut jeans. Lovely and flattering from the front, scary horror film from the back I think!

lol Moondog, good point about vast rump.

MorrisZapp · 11/07/2009 15:58

Logging off for now ladies, what a pleasure it has been blethering about clothes with smart and funny gals like you. Lovely weekend to all.

Swedes · 11/07/2009 16:00

MrsSB (How goes the work? And how goes the new working wardrobe?) I bought patent leather silver proper Converse in the end (having ordered and sent back various other silver copies from Boden to M&S in the interim) and I like them v much. I got them online from Office.

Next had some nice silver pumps that actually looked r good and they were cheap.

DarrellRivers · 11/07/2009 16:03

Oh MZ, I look great in wrap dresses
Lots of lovely M+S stuff here, am pleasantly suprised
like swedes and simple's stuff

DarrellRivers · 11/07/2009 16:03

front and back btw

MrsSeanBean · 11/07/2009 16:05

Bye MZ

Hi Swedes
Working wardrobe started well, now rather crumpled. And my favourite Hobbs skirt got ruined at a 'classy' (yeah right) fish 'n' chip place that DH wanted to go to (long story). However, the Hobbs sale is now on and I have been pondering Sloane jacket, scroll down, won't let me link direct to it) (reduced from £159 to £89.) Have wanted it all summer but am afraid it might be a one season wonder. Any thougts?

modrin · 11/07/2009 16:05

great post MorrisZapp

mrsmerryweather · 11/07/2009 16:09

I think it's wrong to slag all M&S as whatever...the occasional ( and very occasional) item looks ok if you dress it up, take off the cheap belts etc etc.

But you need to go Autog. or LC most of the time.

I got an ok pair of shorts, and a swimsuit- despite looking in Selfridges and not seeing anything I liked better. ( and not willing to spend £££s on a swimsuit.)

EldonAve · 11/07/2009 16:10

direct link for you
I like it

MrsSeanBean · 11/07/2009 16:13

Thanks EldonAve. It would only let me view it in a pop up. It's quite a bargain isn't it?

Swedes · 11/07/2009 17:18

I like the Hobbs 3QS Bo Coat the best. I like the Sloane jacket v v much but not sure how much of an investment it would be as it's quite limiting as to what you can wear with it.

Check out this lovely 3QS Giulia Blouse in silk Drums fingers, feeling v v tempted.

Simples · 11/07/2009 17:19

I have that silver one in me basket
will rmmove belt
