Plus size non-wedding wedding dress

Can I pull off a non wedding-y dress for getting married in?

Size 22
5ft 10
Longish brown hair
Massive boobs but also very thick around the waist now
Will need to train myself to walk in anything more than a kitten heel
Flexible budget
Small wedding, registry office then some food and cocktails at home
November wedding, it will be cold
Been married before and don't want anything too bridal.
Not good legs but midi is okay.

I like the thought of a statement dress but not even sure where to start. In my head I have some sort of outfit that you'd wear to the opera, maybe something embroidered or long or metallic, just something different. But I don't know where to even start looking for options and have spent all day yesterday basically on the usual bridal websites not really finding anything

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Rough budget for the dress?

Weddingideas · 19/07/2026 12:49

Up to £800? Would be happy with something at £50 if it worked. Thank you

Needle & Thread have lots of lovely embroidered dresses up to size 22 within that budget.

SchmuckNorris · 19/07/2026 12:53

were you thinking of a white dress or were you hoping for more colour?

Fiddlesticks1 · 19/07/2026 12:55

I’ve just looked on Vinted, not necessarily to buy from but some ideas that might help you to narrow down shops that have the sort of outfit you would like.

user593 · 19/07/2026 12:56

I also came across this website the other day. I haven’t bought from them before but I’d love to have an excuse/ occasion to buy one!

It’s too early in the year for much winter stock to be visible yet - but if your budget really is flexible you might keep an eye on Marina Rinaldi. This dress isn’t embellished (it would be an excellent foil for jewels and a fur or velvet outer layer) but they will have that sort of thing in a couple of months.

(NB you’d be a 27 in their sizing.)

Undecided, I think I might feel a bit silly in white?! But maybe that is easier to find. Am 42, forgot to mention.

Thank you, I have seen these and they are amazing but I think I would look like some sort of reenactor/a ship in sale! Thank you for the suggestion though.

Ok, I started with a look through Karen Millen

some examples, any of these the kind of thing you had in mind?

teal metallic print

red metallic structured

floral embroidered

navy embellished

satin large floral print

Thanks so much. The shape of the first one is lovely. I will have a look through all the websites linked.

I go between something really simple with maybe an organza overlay or cape, to wanting something super different and in your face.

Edited

Thank you! I love that. But I wear wrap and shirt dresses to work and mentally unsure how to make a shape like that more "getting married"? Maybe it's all in the accessories?

I also like Katya Wildman but have a similar thing for some of them of if I'd just look like I was going to dinner instead of getting married? But that doesn't matter does it. And with hair etc done then it's a different look.

Sorry... I think I need a spreadsheet

Edited to add I think I either go typical bridal maybe 50s style or a beautiful dress that's in a nice colour and remember will have shoes/hair/make-up etc.

Try Hope & Ivy. I found the perfect dress on their website for my wedding which sounds similar to yours.

Really you need to wait until they bring in their winter stock!

Have you looked specifically at the Katya Wildman Bridal collection - definitely not the kind of thing you could wear to a normal dinner, and rather gorgeous https://katyawildman.com/collections/bridal

Woukd you consider this from Gudrun Sjoden, ecru in size XL? I’ve ordered it in black and pink but don’t have an excuse for ecru.

It’s embroidered all over, in different patterns in the different sections. I’m your size and shape, but don’t have your gift of height. At £50 including postage you could afford the underskirt it needs.

edit: it’s 100% cotton, certified organic, if that matters to you. It does to me. I avoid polyester, but some people don’t mind.

Thank you, those are stunning! I love the red one. Not sure if red is my colour, it is beautiful. Think will order that and try it on

Thank you, I'm not sure how that would sit over my boobs to be honest, they are huge. Which is annoying!

Black and pink sound beautiful for the summer
