What did you wear to your registry office wedding?

I’m at a loss as to what to wear! I want it to be special and memorable, but at the same time I don’t want anything remotely bridal. I’ve got a gorgeous white blazer that I could wear, that’s as wedding-y as I could go - but then what would I wear this with?

It’s a very casual affair. PILs will be witnesses. There will be photos but not professional.

Would a bouquet (a simple one) be overkill? I quite like the idea of a fascinator, too, but same concern!

Special jewellery for the occasion or not?

Help an accidental/reluctant bride out 😩

(First marriage, mid-30s, if relevant.)

Thanks!

Full on Hollywood bride, only got married in a registry office as husband was a divorcee.

What sort of clothes do you like? Do you like dresses? Jumpsuits? Something else? I’d try and find an outfit you really love - in whatever colour you love, I wouldn’t worry about a bouquet looking ott, if you can’t have one for your wedding (and you want one), when can you?

Not a fan of jumpsuits, especially in really hot weather. I’m thinking a mini dress. And yes, I’m now sold on a bouquet thanks to this thread!

Congratulations!

DH and I were married in a courthouse in the US in my hometown. It was early April. I wore a white linen, midi column dress with a matching jacket and some sassy, salmon coloured shoes. He brought me a bouquet and wore a dark suit. As we walked back to the car, everyone wished us well b/c they could see we'd just married.

We’re also getting married in the US :) Hence needing to check the rules around how many people we can bring and whether this needs to be prearranged.

A cream knee length dress . Theres some lovely stuff now like dua lipa and Maura Higgins wore . I think those kind of outfits will be more in fashion soon than the flouncy dresses .

This floral Staud minidress is really pretty colours - you could have an amazing tonal bouquet of pink, apricot & white roses! And the bow at the back makes it a bit more bridal (ish!).

I love the cut of this dress but not the print (will probably avoid a floral print - I don’t think it will look special enough on me). I especially like the bow at the back. I went to see Lily Allen live on Friday and the first dress she wore was perfect, I wish I knew where it was from. I’ll try to find photos.

These are terrible photos but I hope you can see the style of the dress. Mini, thin straps, bow at the back. I have Lily Allen’s size/physique but with smaller boobs. Blonde hair. I don’t know if that’s a helpful description!

Is it silver? Do you like the idea of something glitzy? Would you like to wear silver/gold?

I'd taken from you saying casual, & a dress that you can wear again, that you'd like a really pretty mini day dress. But maybe not??!!

EleanorMc67 · 23/06/2026 13:16

Lots of suggestions via Google Lens re her dress, but none that is it exactly. Of course, it may be made specially for the tour, or it may be customised (the little straps & bow would be easy additions?)

Also lots & lots of non-trad wedding minis, & non-wedding glitzy minis out there!!!

I wore an ankle length bridal dress I got on vinted for £60 - loved it and the day felt very special

mumof2many1943 · 23/06/2026 13:26

A maternity dress!!🫣

ToadRage · 23/06/2026 13:30

This is what we wore to our registry office wedding. As we had a covid wedding with just two witnesses we did have a blessing and a big party a few years later when I wore a proper bridal gown and him a suit.

It wasn’t too glitzy - it was a kind of satin fabric? I liked the style (mini, cute/baby doll ish) more than the specific fabric, and even the colour I’m not sure about. I think I would look better in light pink or a light gold than blue which I think suited Lily so much because of her long dark hair (which I don’t have).

I wore a secondhand Monsoon cream dress from their bridal range - it felt low-key to me as it was knee-length and under £50, but sounds too bridal for you. It was 15 years ago and would look too flouncy and dated now.
I never really get dressed up at any other time though so I'm glad I took the chance to go a bit princessy!

Crushed23 · 23/06/2026 13:45

What I meant by wanting to wear it again was that I’d like to be able to wear it to a party/special occasion, not necessarily out and about,

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I wore this knee length dress in ivory. I put a petticoat underneath to add a bit of volume.

This Odd Muse dress won't take up much of your budget! Cute though.

Don’t think a mini dress is appropriate for a wedding

FrillySwans · 23/06/2026 14:37

I’m a Registrar, and have married people in everything from ballgown sparkly dresses, to jeans and a t shirt!

I would say the chic 60s mini dress vibe is very “in” at the moment!

Congratulations OP!

Jennalong · 23/06/2026 14:39

We wanted our wedding as an almost non event , we'd been together years . So dh bought nothing new and I had a new top and wore trousers I already had . We had just witnesses and no guests , no reception . Told family & friends later . I use my single name so there are probably loads of people who still don't know .
Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding.

Have you read any of the thread?

The OP thinks she'd like something non-bridal, mini/babydoll/fun. And posted a picture of Lily Allen in a satin bustier-style mini dress with a big sash & bow at the back.

As to what's "appropriate" for a wedding, I think the posts & photos above prove that anything is appropriate!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/06/2026 14:44

Not me. My mum her first wedding wore nothing special it was a spontaneous decision to get married. Her second wedding to my dad she wore a Victorian broderie anglaise/lace long sleeved long floor length white wedding dress (or just a dress). Very close fitting. Shoes no idea. No special jewellery.
