What did you wear to your registry office wedding?

I’m at a loss as to what to wear! I want it to be special and memorable, but at the same time I don’t want anything remotely bridal. I’ve got a gorgeous white blazer that I could wear, that’s as wedding-y as I could go - but then what would I wear this with?

It’s a very casual affair. PILs will be witnesses. There will be photos but not professional.

Would a bouquet (a simple one) be overkill? I quite like the idea of a fascinator, too, but same concern!

Special jewellery for the occasion or not?

Help an accidental/reluctant bride out 😩

(First marriage, mid-30s, if relevant.)

Thanks!

Don't worry at all about choices being "too much" I've seen people going into the local registry office in full merrangue dress, one in particular I remember did a twirl after getting out of the car. It's whatever makes you smile, really.

A kilt for moi..cream dress for DW.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 22/06/2026 18:29

We both wore jeans, t shirts (mine a Ramones one, DH an obscure role playing game he’d played since he was a kid), and our 2 adult kids were witnesses. Had already been together for over 20 years by then, so didn’t want anything lavish nor a multitude of gifts.

Do your wedding the way you want to!

I wore a simple white fitted-ish midi dress from boohoo, cost me £30, I had some silver heels and my friends got me (unbeknownst to me) a bouquet and matching posies for my daughters. They had little bridesmaid-style princess dresses with flowers in the hem and my husband wore a blue suit 😁

There was 5 from my side (parents and siblings) and two from my husbands. Absolutely loved it

TheGirlWhoLived · 22/06/2026 18:33

Oh and my best friend lent me her beautiful tiara that she wore for her own wedding way back when

Prombles · 22/06/2026 18:33

I wore a traditional wedding dress - it was a vintage one in white silk. It's a once in a lifetime (one hopes) chance to wear a full on wedding dress and I didn't intend to waste it.

SeasideDaisy · 22/06/2026 18:36

This was we wore for our registry wedding. My dress was a Ralph Lauren cream lace occasion dress that I got from Tkmaxx for £25. DH got his suit from Next, DS in Navy from M&s and DSD dress was from Monsoon. Friends took photos and we had a sit down meal in a pub/restaurant that had a band on anyway afterwards for 20 people. It was in between lockdowns and we had a lovely day, didn’t feel over dressed at all.

You’re right, I shouldn’t worry about being too much. I guess I want a nod to this being my ‘wedding day’ without being too wedding-y. So I like the idea of a simple bouquet and the suggestion of flowers in my hair.

I still had my hair and makeup done professionally to op, who cares if people think you’re over the top, it’s your wedding day!

Lovely dress with pretty neckline, perfect for a wedding.

30 years ago I wore a strapless long dupion silk ivory dress and made a matching wrap. I had matching shoes and cream and pink flowers. I bought it from the evening wear department of Dickens and Jones but it looked like a regular wedding dress.

Register office. Not registry

Meringue not merrangue!

Crushed23 · 22/06/2026 18:40

Interesting that so many of you had a few people in attendance. Hadn’t thought to include more than the requisite 2 witnesses (who will be my PILs). I’ll look into the rules around this where we live.

I had 20 guests, to the ceremony and on for a meal afterwards.

I had 40 people which was the maximum.

Congratulations 🎊. We had a very small registry office wedding in April. I shopped my wardrobe & wore a cream RL maxi dress I'd had for years & a cream blazer with gold shoes. I had proper ( small) bouquet of flowers & corsage too, did own hair & make up. The best bit was going into a pub beforehand & the LL playing "I'm getting married in the morning" once seeing me & my family. It was brilliant.

Wedding photos were on phones, we had brilliant weather & had a lovely late lunch afterwards. It was a simple day but wonderful & it felt lovely as we walked through town (Bath) afterwards with loads of random strangers wishing us congratulations.

Enjoy your special day

Endlesslywondering · 22/06/2026 18:51

P.s. I hadmy brother & sister in law as witnesses & my mum, so v small.

rusteenail · 22/06/2026 18:57

Congratulations OP! I wore this with a cropped blush Ted Baker blazer over it. I don’t have the blazer any more but still have the dress, I love it 🩷

Obviously that’s a model and not me 😂

I wore a cream Ghost dress from ebay. I made my bouquet from flowers in my garden. I had a big flower in my hair, pearl studs and a pearl bracelet that I wouldn't usually wear but they were a bit bridal. I also had a white clutch bag and some fabulous shoes. I'm glad I looked like bride albeit a low key one.

Pineapplesunshine · 22/06/2026 19:25

A friend of mine wore a beautiful emerald green gown on the basis that she would never spend that much on a dress again so she wanted to get something gorgeous. She succeeded and looked amazing. I wish I had done the same - I ended up getting a white gown as everything else I tried on my mum said, you don’t look like a bride… I didn’t want to look like a bride… everything else about the day was pretty casual, although I did have flowers and I did get my hair done for the first and last time. We had our surviving parents, siblings and a mate each with their families to the service and then we had dinner in a private room before getting a black cab home. The driver asked if we’d been anywhere nice, so I guess I didn’t look that bridal.
If I did it again, I think I’d go for a trouser suit like Amal Clooney wore over her wedding weekend.
Whatever you decide to wear, have a lovely day!

I don't think it's quite as clear cut as that?

Register office is the formal term in the UK, as used by most councils etc, but registry office is the informal - & more common - usage. It's not actually incorrect, as far as I know? And some councils actually prefer the term registration office ...

Was it the green Falconetti dress by The Vampire's Wife, by any chance? I've loved it forever!

Though I was once told off on another thread by a poster for suggesting something from the label - as her dresses had been "everywhere" in London a few years ago & were so commonplace & dated now ...!!!

I'm interested in style over fashion, so I couldn't give a toss. The clothes are beautiful.

Budget ~£500, but would definitely stretch this for the right outfit.

Absolutely love that VW dress but I want to avoid white/cream, yes.

Want a dress/outfit I can wear again.

Heavily leaning towards a mini dress. Something a bit different / with an edge, ideally, so VW is very much along the right lines. Thanks for the tip!

What's your colouring - & what colours do you like/suit?
