What did you wear to your registry office wedding?

I’m at a loss as to what to wear! I want it to be special and memorable, but at the same time I don’t want anything remotely bridal. I’ve got a gorgeous white blazer that I could wear, that’s as wedding-y as I could go - but then what would I wear this with?

It’s a very casual affair. PILs will be witnesses. There will be photos but not professional.

Would a bouquet (a simple one) be overkill? I quite like the idea of a fascinator, too, but same concern!

Special jewellery for the occasion or not?

Help an accidental/reluctant bride out 😩

(First marriage, mid-30s, if relevant.)

Thanks!

Congratulations!

DH and I were married in a courthouse in the US in my hometown. It was early April. I wore a white linen, midi column dress with a matching jacket and some sassy, salmon coloured shoes. He brought me a bouquet and wore a dark suit. As we walked back to the car, everyone wished us well b/c they could see we'd just married.

You can wear a wedding dress at a Registry Office Wedding.

handbagsandhairclips · 22/06/2026 21:21

Is it this summer, what about reiss as a place to look?

Hedgehog23 · 22/06/2026 21:21

What sort of clothes do you like? Do you like dresses? Jumpsuits? Something else? I’d try and find an outfit you really love - in whatever colour you love, I wouldn’t worry about a bouquet looking ott, if you can’t have one for your wedding (and you want one), when can you?

Bientot · 22/06/2026 21:23

We had five friends and our two kids at our registry office wedding.

I bought some expensive jeans (like £250 - would never spend that normally) and wore a top I liked with trainers as a nice jacket. It was perfect for me.

EleanorMc67 · 22/06/2026 21:25

Summery, cute, casual - would go with your blazer AND it would count as something blue??

We were only 25, with a toddler. I wore cream organic silk trousers that I made, with a silk camisole and a longline dusky blue button up 'shirt/top' from TopShop. It was 35 years ago, so hard to describe! We had no budget at all! A friend made a hairband, and someone attempted to sort my hair out.
Our neighbour offered to take some photos for us. DH upgraded his day to day clothes with new jeans, hemp shirt, boots, and a hat (no, not an episode of Dutton, but not far off).
Had very small ceremony at the registers office, then lunch for 30 in a local pub.
Finished off with a massive party that evening for everyone else. Hired the local rugby clubhouse, family helped with the food and decorations, people all bought a plate of food instead of a present, 3 bands (mainly mates) etc.
It was all we could afford, and frankly, neither of us knew anything about trad marriage ceremonies and customs.
Great day and wouldn't have changed it for the world.
My Mum still says it's the best wedding she's ever attended.
OH and I are still together.

I'm loving all these stories of little informal weddings!!

So much in contrast with the 500 guests that no one really knows & colour-coordinated Instagrammable everything - & they sound all the more meaningful for it ...

You paint a very vivid, & very charming, picture - you should write it all down for your child/children as you write well!

I had my wedding in our small one‑bedroom apartment. I wore a silky navy‑blue dress with lace sleeves and carried a bouquet of field flowers. My shoes were simple brown block heels, and I had my hair done up beautifully by a hairstylist. We spent exactly one thousand dollars on everything, my dress, his suit, and all the details that made the day ours.

My brother‑in‑law took the photos, and my sister, a good friend, and my groom all made cakes. Every guest brought a little something to share. We had thirteen guests in total, plus the officiator. It was intimate, warm, and full of love.

I adored my wedding and wouldn’t change a thing, except that I wish my parents could have been there. But we were new immigrants in a faraway country, and flying them over just wasn’t possible at the time.

While my groom and I are not together any more, we did spend twenty five years together and have three amazing children.

I wore a wedding dress and had the most beautiful flowers, English country garden style, the pictures of the flowers still make me happy. Get your bouquet! And wear whatever makes you smile - what colours suit you?

PhaedraTwo · 22/06/2026 22:41

Black velvet mid calf dress with something like the collar shape on Yvette Cooper's wedding dress, made for me.

No flowers and no rings. The registrar had to be told several times that we would not be exchanging rings. Neither of us wear wedding rings and I don't have, and didn't want, an engagement ring.

Mine was £28 from Next

AllFloatOn · 22/06/2026 23:46

I bought a non-white bridesmaid dress from ASOS for mine. I had a bunch of flowers as a bouquet that were a bit contrasting and looked lovely with my dress.

Congratulations! Enjoy the day!

EleanorMc67 · 23/06/2026 00:35

This floral Staud minidress is really pretty colours - you could have an amazing tonal bouquet of pink, apricot & white roses! And the bow at the back makes it a bit more bridal (ish!).

Interesting that so many of you had a few people in attendance. Hadn’t thought to include more than the requisite 2 witnesses (who will be my PILs). I’ll look into the rules around this where we live.

if you’ve booked the most basic / marriage only, you can only have two people (plus you & spouse). You need to hire a room etc at the council offices to have more. You might be able to add onto what you’ve booked if you just have the basic one.

we did the basic and it was literally in someone’s office at their desk. In a small room between the library and the disabled toilet! But a lovely day - I still wept with joy throughout the ceremony. 🥰 we also (straight couple) decided to do a civil partnership instead for a bit less patriarchy 😂

Peony1985 · 23/06/2026 06:51

I wore the tight tweed waistcoat with just a bra underneath (husbands favourite thing I wear) , jeans and vintage irregular choice bridal shoes .
Old, new, borrowed, blue

Confusedmommadrama · 23/06/2026 07:23

I looked at some blue outfits for mine as still felt slightly wedding vibes without going for a cream dress. Similar vibes to the attached pics. Had around 25 guests (all family apart from 4) then lunch after. Also had a small boquet for me and buttonholes for the men

A friend of my family got married at the registry office in jeans and tshirts. They were married just over 50 years until his death earlier this year.

I wore a traditional wedding dress - it was a vintage one in white silk. It's a once in a lifetime (one hopes) chance to wear a full on wedding dress and I didn't intend to waste it.

I have known at least four people to wear proper wedding dresses at registry office weddings! You’re absolutely right, if that’s what you want to wear you shouldn’t let getting married in a registry office stop you (I had no idea until a few years ago that there are even people who think it should).
