What's a 'french tuck' at the end of the day?

I mean should I have just done fully tucked in or fully out? It was to the side, so at a slightly jaunty angle, does that make it better? - I’m mortified at my faux pas!!!!

@DramaAlpaca , I also think it looks like someone's just been to the loo and accidentally caught a bit of their top in their waistband.

Yes!!!

I don't care if I'm "dated", "in", "mumsy", "wearing a certain demographical uniform", "unfashionable" or "boring", I bought some white trainers a few years ago to go with some dresses that were even older because I saw other people wearing similar and thought they looked nice, and comfy. I'm sorry, but I'm not wasting money on new things because of someone else's idea that I look "wrong". It's ridiculous the amount of money people spend trying to be fashionable. When really, I don't even think it's a thing anymore going by what people are wearing in my town. There are trends of course, but no one notices if someone is wearing something not "on trend".

Good for you.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 10:44

@tiptoethrutulips , I don't really care what people think. Especially people who think something is 'dated' the 'done' the minute people over 40 start wearing it. Just rude, imo.
If you don't care what people think, then in what way is it rude?

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 10:46

Here's the look for you:

Nothing wrong with it and it would suit a woman of any age group.

I’m sorry but she looks ridiculous.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 10:51

@Aluna , why?

@Aluna , why?

It just looks odd. Like she’s stuck on any old shoes to let the dog out.

If you’re going to do it: stick to vintage trainers or ballet trainers like Puma speedcats.

Yes!!!

No on e has answered yet.

Is a French tuck your blouse half in your trouser waist band or your dress in your knickers, from behind?

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 11:02

The images are from Women's Dresses | Dresses For Women | Cotton Traders.

They are decent quality clothes at reasonable prices and they look perfectly nice.

Discuss 😂

They are quite 'ordinary' and what my Mum's friends in their late 80s would wear.

Marvellous what this new fangled internet can teach you: The French Tuck: What It Is and How to Do It

lalaloopyhead · 09/04/2026 11:10

I love a french tuck! I am the wrong shape to have anything all in or all out, so the half and half suits me fine and I am going to stick with it for now.

I have a few things that I have wondered if they are starting to look a little dated - quilted jackets & sling bags for starters...but I am 53 and have started to think that as long as i like it and its comfortable I am not that fussed anymore.

Yep. My dad got into Cotton Traders when he hit 80. 😄

It's all bollocks.

Thanks anyway!

RampantIvy · 09/04/2026 12:30

God, the ageism and sneering on this thread from the fashion police is depressing 😒

For the record, I have never owned any white trainers. If it is warm enough for me to wear a dress with bare legs I wear sandals.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 12:32

@RampantIvy , not from me.
I think the dress and white trainers/daps or sandals is a classic look.

Dresses with white trainers aren’t dated - huge numbers of women are wearing them regularly. Who decides what is dated - someone who thinks they know better?

Goodness, you want people to explain how fashion works to you as you don’t understand, maybe google?

No need to be rude! Influencers think they know better but if the wearer is happy with their outfit, that’s is worth much more.
