@StylishAndBeautiful Why cannot old fatter women wear coloured trainers! Or retro ones in suede? I do. I’m 70? Nor am I slim. Of course Vogue photographs the fashion crowd (as they say) but they often set trends and are imaginative. Even m&S has coloured suede trainers and very good they are too. No, I don’t wear mini skirts but trainers can be worn with longer skirt lengths and dresses. I’ve just got a pale butter yellow suede pair. I’m looking forward to wearing those with denim and my pale yellow wool utility jacket.

Fashion is an industry but of course people flag up trends because it’s fun.

I wear dresses and trainers. I don't care if it makes me look like a "mum", I am a mum.

LucyLancaster · 08/04/2026 17:05

Middle-aged mum vibes.

but was always this. So wear what you like. I say this as a mum. I like to be classic in style, without being ubiquitous. So never did the trainees and dress.

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/04/2026 17:14

@MeetMeOnTheCorner , Why cannot old fatter women wear coloured trainers!
I didn't say they couldn't, they can wear whatever they like.

BrieAndChilli · 08/04/2026 17:17

I'd rather look dated and comfortable than look like a middle aged woman trying to look twenty - which is what I would like if I tried to wear any of the new 'fashions'

Chersfrozenface · 08/04/2026 17:21

Dresses with white faux leather tennis shoes and usually a brightly coloured faux leather biker jacket, through late spring, summer and early autumn.

I'm looking at middle age in the rear view mirror. Sue me.

Monacoferza · 08/04/2026 17:22

Well in France last week people were wearing white trainers, black trainers or tan coloured trainers with their dresses. ☺️

There was me plodding around wearing green and pink trainers!

KaleidoscopeSmile · 08/04/2026 14:16

I think you should ignore anyone who thinks something's dated if you like it yourself but the problem with the dress and trainers (and denim jacket) thing is that it became so ubiquitous among a certain demographic, such a uniform.

How is that a problem? I assume you mean middle class women of a certain age?

GreekIslands · 08/04/2026 17:25

I can't afford to just chuck out 3 pairs of shoes because 'someone' decides they don't look right any more. I've New B trainers in pale grey/ white and 2 pairs of leather lace ups (not exactly a trainer more like a leather Converse) . I wear them a lot but not in winter.

I'm close to London and everyone wears anything from designer stuff to boring white trainers.

Platypus7 · 08/04/2026 17:34

I think it’s just a staple, I see loads of women in dresses and white trainers, young and old. I’m starting to think the brightly coloured Adidas look a bit dated now (and I have 3 pairs!) as I just see them everywhere. I dug out my grey Superga trainers today and wore them with a dress instead.

DatWan · 08/04/2026 17:36

White trainers, colourful midi dress, cropped jacket was an extremely popular uniform a few years ago (dunno about ‘fashionable’) and probably less so now, but I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at someone wearing it now or think ‘how dated!’.

I still see loads of people where I live (London) - including the young/fashionable! - wearing white trainers, although more so with long skirts rather than a midi dress.

Most of the people in that Vogue spread look like they are doing the walk of shame the morning after, wearing a weird array of their mate/boyfriend’s clothes 😆.

I hate to parrot the cliche but…wear what you like!

The butter yellow suede pair sound lovely, do you have a link?

Do the coloured trainers have to coordinate with the dress?! Because I can’t justify multiple pairs of trainers when one white pair would do me for the season. And if not trainers, what are people wearing with dresses instead (that are equally comfortable and practical). I don’t care about being mumsy in my personal life but ideally I wouldn’t look totally out sync with the modern world when I’m at work.

Danikm151 · 08/04/2026 17:39

It’s my uniform during the summer. Add chub rub shorts and i’m good to go 😂

I’m 34 btw.

Ohhhthedrama · 08/04/2026 15:44

Apparently it's dated but I see this look in the shops and I bet if you go anywhere on a sunny day you'll see plenty of people wearing it. I think it looks nice. Have you seen some of the 'fashion' posted here?. Bloody awful. Go with what you like and feel good in. This weekend I wore the dreaded skinny jeans with Converse and a cotton shirt. I think that would also be considered dated but I felt good in it and got a few compliments.

It’s a curious thing, does seeing a lot of it make it current. You could argue yes.

i was out a couple of weeks ago at an event, it was very low income younger demographic and there were lots of skinny jeans, but im not sure it was a fashion choice as such, more they couldn’t afford to replace them. Nothing looked new nor did any of it look like a fashion choice.

im not sure it makes skinny jeans current, but I can see the argument. However the one thing I noticed is how unflattering they were on nearly every person, men and women, some of them so tight and thin they were very revealing. Every shape and size.

I can’t lie, it put me right off skinny jeans. To the extent I can’t beleive I ever wore them and loved them.

so I think sometimes we see a lot of something not because it’s current more people can’t afford to change their wardrobe or they wear it for comfort /familiarity, but it doesn’t mean it’s curent as such.

I decided against the trainers and wore the dress with flat sandals instead. A lady came up to me in the shopping centre and asked me where my dress was from 😁

I wore this dress - https://scampanddude.com/products/button-midi-dress-pink-with-blue-and-black-shadow-leopard?variant=42661590991027&srsltid=AfmBOoqJgVNVJiNmrO4KQmANY_hGczvs5r06o1nOsXKm6FFyaWF-QldCld4

These sandals - https://www.next.co.uk/style/su439963/e54997

I like that dress

CookingFatCat · 08/04/2026 17:48

Those women posted earlier from Vogue dress for themselves I’m sure! 🫣

They look like they’ve rummaged through a bag left outside the charity shop that’s had all the good stuff taken 😂

I agree. The footwear was pretty awful.

I never bought into the white trainer look. I have some navy leather Remonte trainers with white soles that go with all my dresses. I don't have room or £££ to own several pairs of trainers in different colours.

I also don't view trainers as a fashion item. So shoot me.

Judging by the young ‘uns at my work, the trainers match your top- eg pink top, black skirt or trousers and pink trainers.

I only usually wear mine with a dress if it’s denim or black, or at least all one colour - I have a green dress that looks quite good with burgundy trainers.

Agree. Hideous.

JumpinJehoshaphat · 08/04/2026 19:57

In yr1 of Covid, I was living in patterned (often leopard) bright dresses and white trainers. It’s a very dated look now. I sold all of my patterned dresses on Vinted as they quite suddenly made me feel really frumpy.

I still have some white trainers, but they’re 2-tone now and I only wear them with wide legged jeans, trousers or barrel legs.

andana · 08/04/2026 20:14

I think you could probably get away with it depending on the trainer, especially if it was a classic as it blends into your outfit rather than becoming a statement. Just make sure your dress is more on trend (looser column style, wide collar, denim) avoid anything floral or too printed and no denim jacket! My sister had a sort of voluminous denim midi dress from Arket on over the weekend with white trainers and it looked rather cool and effortless while still being appropriate for our age!

Thecows · 08/04/2026 20:30

I've got loads of coloured trainers, wore a green pair of Addidas to London the other day and everyone was in white trainers! It's literally only on here that I read they're passe

GoodkneeBadKnee · 08/04/2026 20:58

Dated. Dated. As. Fuck.

What new fashions do you mean? I’m in my fifties, I will wear a dress and trainers, but a midi dress, sleeveless, column, or wide skirt, trainers are not white, and not trainer trainers. I also wear wide leg trousers and jeans, velvet blazers, to the waist fitted leather jackets, fitted tops. They all suit my frame, and are current.

i don’t think the only two options are you look like you’re trying to be twenty or you have to be dated and comfortable, there is a whole mid ground of dressing wirh a nod to current, to suit your body shape. The trick is to make it current and goof quality and have it fit.
