Dated? Or still acceptable to wear?!

Why do these posters comment on S&B? Confused

OP asked 'Dated? Or still acceptable to wear?!'

Me: Both. They're perfectly acceptable bit they're not hot-off-the-catwalk fashion.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 12:45

Parker231 · 09/04/2026 12:39

No need to be rude! Influencers think they know better but if the wearer is happy with their outfit, that’s is worth much more.

The OP was not confident that she was happy was she or she wouldn't have asked. You're the one being rude.

@Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink I would probably wear the dress and denim jacket because I wore them before it was fashionable.

The 'french tuck' to me looks like 'I'm trying to hide a thick waistline'.

The 'hide the thick waistline' thing is exactly why I do it!

Mangelwurzelfortea · 09/04/2026 12:58

I don't think white trainers - per se - are in or out. Teen girls still seem to be wearing white Nike Air Force 1 trainers. My kids (teens) both have a range of trainers including white, black and coloured ones. I myself - not a bastion of trainer fashion, but a long-term fan of an old-skool trainer - have a selection of Adidas Gazelles in various colours. Silver is my favourite at the moment. I've worn these since the '90s and I am not stopping now!

@Daftypants Who keeps a note of when they buy things? How odd. No one is saying don’t keep things. It’s just that some posters suck the joy out of buying new things and updating how they look. I guess you don’t wear what your mum did so even you have bought fashion over the years. What is wrong with putting white trainers to one side and buying a coloured pair? It’s just a fairly inexpensive update to your wardrobe to provide variety and less of a “white trainer trend” follower. I cannot see how this means all your summer clothes should be given away? Big leap there!

Giving all my clothes away 😆I was being sarcastic 🙃
I have very little disposable income so I’m unlikely to do that or to buy the latest colour trainers but I do replace things from time to time or buy more than one of something that suits and is comfortable .
I have a rough idea of how old most of my clothes are because I don’t have many .
My quilted denim jacket was a purchase last year to replace a shorter denim jacket that was a cheap supermarket purchase from 13 years ago and it was pulling at the bust / across the back .
If people can afford to replace and update that’s lovely

In London you will see anything. It's a multicultural city of millions of women.

Most people who are out and about in London wear sensible shoes that are often trainers. It's full of tourists who are walking. Or climbing stairs at the tube. There are trainers in every colour you can imagine.

Women in London walk to work in trainers and keep heels in a box in the office!

Of course if you're off to somewhere posh to eat, you'll find all kinds of shoes.

I think women in the provinces are far more obsessed with fashion than London.

Not heels, flats.

henlake7 · 09/04/2026 15:49

I think this look persists, despite being dated, because it genuinely looks nice!
It may not be the height of fashion but its usually a cute look.

Personally I love a floaty summer dress and a denim jacket pretty much goes with most things so its practical.
I dont do trainers, just not my thing. I wear either Converse or tennis shoes.

MJFEB2026 · 09/04/2026 16:07

I can proudly say I’ve never done the French tuck 😁

Quite nice to see the range of opinions! I had a baby last year and I’m coming out of the new born baby fog and into the big wide world again, hence my question!

@StylishAndBeautiful Not any age group! My DDs would not be seen dead in those outfits. I’m 70 and not for me either. Just below knee dress length is a bit odd for me as I’m tall. Those dresses could have been made 20 years ago plus! That’s not fashion in my view. It’s repeat buying and not updating.

Heels? Who the heck wears heels any more, now that really is dated

Goodness, you want people to explain how fashion works to you as you don’t understand, maybe google?

How do you define "dated" when a huge number of people are still wearing "dated" clothes and footwear?

We had this with skinny jeans. The fashionistas on here kept saying how dated skinny jeans were (this was a while ago), but huge swathes of the population were still wearing them.

I prefer to look stylish rather than fashionable, and tend to wear clothes and footwear for years but update them with something that is more "now".

I will not be parted from my denim jacket though 😁. Its pockets negate the need for a handbag.

Wellthisisdifficult · 09/04/2026 16:59

Is my 90’s Iron Maiden t shirt dated or does it depend on the colour of trainers I wear with it? I sometimes french tuck it into my skinny jeans to add context.

AddictedToTea · 09/04/2026 17:04

The 'french tuck' to me looks like 'I'm trying to hide a thick waistline”.

That is exactly what I’m trying to do! The rest of me is slim, I just have a pot belly no amount of running will get rid of .

@MeetMeOnTheCorner , I said in a pp that it's a dated look as in not current, but that particular post was more to do with it being acceptable.

I wouldn't wear it because I don't wear little floral prints but I wouldn't be horrified if somebody else was wearing it, be they 18, 38, 58 or 78.

It's probably the equivalent of a polo shirt and chinos outfit on a man when he's been wearing that look for the past 20 years because it's 'safe'.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/04/2026 14:30

These are just plucked from Vogue recently. They did a dress and trainer editorial. They are, of course, worn by fashionable women. However they are not white and must are retro. So thinner soles and more like a running shoe. However colours are definitely the way to go!

Some of those are horrible! Thanks for posting. I feel better about my own look now!

Well exactly- it’s almost like influencers are paid to tell people the perfectly good crap they currently have is actually crap so they can sell more slightly different crap to people! Who knew???

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 09/04/2026 17:23

@AgentPidgeYou think the trainers are horrible? They just look like trainers to me. Some retro and some not. I didn’t say the outfits were exceptional but they’re showing trainers!

For me it looks like I got dressed in the dark; I just can't seem to get it right Confused

I'm so clueless. What is a French Tuck? is it that tucking in a bit of your tee shirt and letting the rest hang down? Or is it that thing they do on Tik Tok, where they switch the bottom buttons around to make the shirt shorter?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/04/2026 17:25

Dated and I didn't wear it when it wasn't.I know frumpy isn't a kind description but thats what it looks like to me.

Agree!
I couldn't go on holiday without one.. it does everything.

TheChosenTwo · 09/04/2026 17:30

I wear trainers with almost everything but they’re colourful ones not white. I’ve got size 6 or 7 feet (depending on the brand and style) and white trainers make them seem enormous 😂
I can’t however get on board with a denim jacket - I wore them as a teenager and I can’t let go of the association of them being teenagers clothing! Also I imagine they are stiff and uncomfortable and to be honest just not warm enough for me if I actually need to wear a jacket.

Ilovemsrachel · 09/04/2026 17:47

I just did a bit of field work and whoever said white trainers are back in london was definitely right. Lots of different footwear in my tube carriage just now (black ankle boots with bare legs! Ballet pumps! Birks!) but trainers were almost all white or grey. The one coloured pair I saw were bright pink and on a mum in her 60s who was wearing them with skinny jeans and was on holiday. She looked boss to be fair.

The cutting edge people were in white ones though!

RampantIvy · 09/04/2026 18:07

I'm a size 6 and can't get on board with trainers with chunky soles for the same reason. They make my feet look enormous.

greenteaandlimes · 09/04/2026 18:11

Crikey - it’s out of style and I hadnt even got to fully embrace it yet 😫
Though tbh it’s a practical outfit so I’m sure loads of people will continue to wear it - I absolutely will
