Dated? Or still acceptable to wear?!

I think it’s dated, but I’m still guilty of the French tuck so I’m probably a bit behind with the times myself 😄

MrsClattenburg · 08/04/2026 21:55

I've worn skirts and dresses with trainers since I was 18 (1994) and won't be stopping any time soon. I've always worn trainers over any other footwear - love them!

I've got loads of coloured trainers, wore a green pair of Addidas to London the other day and everyone was in white trainers! It's literally only on here that I read they're passe

Yeah this. Maybe it’s London being ahead of the game again. So the provinces are getting into coloured trainers just as London is readopting the white ones 😂

I also think calling things dated isn’t very London. People wear what they want and have their own sense of personal style and in general everyone is less hung up on what others are wearing

In London you will see anything. It's a multicultural city of millions of women.

Most people who are out and about in London wear sensible shoes that are often trainers. It's full of tourists who are walking. Or climbing stairs at the tube. There are trainers in every colour you can imagine.

Women in London walk to work in trainers and keep heels in a box in the office!

Of course if you're off to somewhere posh to eat, you'll find all kinds of shoes.

I think women in the provinces are far more obsessed with fashion than London.

tiptoethrutulips · 08/04/2026 23:25

I wear trainers that are comfortable and not 'flat' ... as I'm flat footed and have knee issues. I don't really care what people think. Especially people who think something is 'dated' the 'done' the minute people over 40 start wearing it. Just rude, imo.

Schoolsec · 09/04/2026 01:34

I still like the look but feel it is a bit dated. Bought a couple of pairs of retro looking trainers and a bomber style jacket just to update. M and S have lovely retro trainers at the moment.

I don’t really get this not very London, I live just outside am regularly In and London is huge and diverse with a lot of tourists, there is no way to understand what’s a trend by looking round you in London.

And in 3 years time retro trainers will be 'dated'.

It's all a bit of a nonsense, really.

I'm old enough to have worn 'retro' trainers 50 years ago!

screamtoabloodysigh · 09/04/2026 08:02

I've been doing it since 1995. It was boots in the winter and trainers in the summer. Also: boots on rock night and trainers on indie night.

Never white trainers though, so thats been the difference.

12345mummy · 09/04/2026 08:04

I think it depends on the style of the trainers, and jacket. For me pump style or flat white trainers or converse with a dress or biker jacket now looks dated. I think chunky white NB trainers and a baggy short cardigan over a dress would be more on trend

12345mummy · 09/04/2026 08:04

That’s meant to say with a denim or biker jacket

Chiefangel · 09/04/2026 08:05

I just wear what the hell I like. I didn’t realise there are actually fashion police going around judging me 😂.

Ponoka7 · 09/04/2026 08:58

BrieAndChilli · 08/04/2026 17:17

I'd rather look dated and comfortable than look like a middle aged woman trying to look twenty - which is what I would like if I tried to wear any of the new 'fashions'

This is how I feel. Also I want to be able to be on my feet all day, if I do decide to go on an adventure. It's the advantage of being a middle aged Mum, my children are grown, so I can be wherever I want to be. Trainers and a dress has been something I've worn for nearly 40 years. They tend to be more cream than white, or a colour that goes with what I'm wearing. I don't understand all the 'mumsy' and 'frumpy' put downs. It doesn't matter what you've got on, someone will always think that you look good, or a complete show on the same day. If you are old enough to be a Mum, you should have worked out that women's 'fashion' is based in misogyny and how dare we not cater to the male gaze, especially foot wear.

Edited

It's mad how men can own clothes for 10 years and no-one is telling them to completely revamp their wardrobe because they are dated or look like a Dad. They all sit in the pub with their boxing day jumper or polo on, as they have done all their life.

IrrationallyAngry · 09/04/2026 09:08

I don't care if I'm "dated", "in", "mumsy", "wearing a certain demographical uniform", "unfashionable" or "boring", I bought some white trainers a few years ago to go with some dresses that were even older because I saw other people wearing similar and thought they looked nice, and comfy. I'm sorry, but I'm not wasting money on new things because of someone else's idea that I look "wrong". It's ridiculous the amount of money people spend trying to be fashionable. When really, I don't even think it's a thing anymore going by what people are wearing in my town. There are trends of course, but no one notices if someone is wearing something not "on trend".

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 09/04/2026 09:12

@IrrationallyAngry So why are you commenting on a thread about style. You want to stay as you are - great. The op was asking about fashion and change. Great you don’t support the fashion industry! Others like to and why not? It’s more than boring reading about pious people who don’t get joy out of new clothes and fashion.

Daftypants · 09/04/2026 09:18

Yesterday we had very mild weather here .
I went out wearing a pair of wide / straight leg linen trousers from 2022 😱 a striped t shirt from 2018 , pale blue trainers from last year and a cardigan that just happened to be a match for one of the colours in the t shirt .
i also took a quilted denim jacket with me ( a purchase from early 2025 and has been worn on repeat) but didn’t need to wear it as was warmer than I thought .
I thought I looked ok 😭 but if I listen to too many on here I’d need to give away much of my summer clothes to the charity shop 😢

Forthesteps · 09/04/2026 09:24

Wear what you like. The only response to all the insecurity which will rampage over the rest of this thread.

It's much more boring to read people pretending they get joy out of following the herd.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 09/04/2026 09:27

@Daftypants Who keeps a note of when they buy things? How odd. No one is saying don’t keep things. It’s just that some posters suck the joy out of buying new things and updating how they look. I guess you don’t wear what your mum did so even you have bought fashion over the years. What is wrong with putting white trainers to one side and buying a coloured pair? It’s just a fairly inexpensive update to your wardrobe to provide variety and less of a “white trainer trend” follower. I cannot see how this means all your summer clothes should be given away? Big leap there!

GreekIslands · 09/04/2026 09:39

I've never gone for the 'white trainer' look anyway. I have several pairs of trainer type shoes (mainly NB) and have white (more like Converse/ plimsol than a trainer), pale grey, navy and black.

I wear the darker ones in winter and with darker clothes and the lighter ones in summer.

I do a lot of city walking ( 3-4 miles in a day sometimes) and I need comfort. Most people in cities are in trainers because ballet shoes, slides, open toed sandals don't work in crowded cities where it's 'every man for himself' at times.

I think it’s says “mumsy” . It’s not necessarily dated as such but there are certain things I won’t wear because of what they say about the person. Another example is the French tuck- this says woman of a certain age. I can’t stand it.

Shit- just walked round Italy with dresses and trainers or linen trousers and a top with a French tuck - holiday ruined 😱😱😱😱😱. All those great memories obliterated!!!

There are trends. Of course there are trends. It’s where trends begin! The difference is is that no one gives a shit if you don’t follow them. That’s what is beautiful about this city!

And if you go to the posh shops in New Bond Street or Sloane St, people with money are usually underdressed and not wearing their 'trendy clothes' to go shopping.

It's a very provincial thing that women look far smarter and want to be 'on trend' when they go out, where as the really rich and 'trendy' look scruffy and only scrub up well when they are going somewhere special.

You can always spot the visitors to London because they have tried to look 'trendy' and look out of place.
