Well I have decided not to wear it now, it can go to the charity shop. Can anyone suggest something for me please that is not more than £150.
Thank you for your help

I really like that dress, why not wear it? I know there’s no navy in the dress but I would wear navy accessories.

@Wildgoatthanks for your help I have some nude shoes I will try them, out of interest why would black be wrong?

I agree with the poster about black. Black would look too heavy. Ignore you xould get the same blue in shoes that would better or even white. Maybe a short white or blue cardigan or wrap but then in June might not need it.

ThisSunnyBee · 13/03/2026 14:30

It's very phase 8 circa 2000 . How about something classic and a nice hat. Fascinators and cardigans are a bit the same era

Wear it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this dress. If it makes you feel good, wear it. Black heels, black jacket, black hat if you want to wear one. Turquoise hat if you find one the same shade as the dress.

tsmainsqueeze · 13/03/2026 15:21

I like it but as someone else said don't wear the sash , i was thinking change the sash to a black one or even a narrow black belt.

minnowonthesay · 10/03/2026 10:00

I think black shoes (pointy sling back) and hat with a turquoise bag, the dress is bold and already has three colours in it, I think adding another colour could be too much.

Agree that you shouldn't add a fourth colour. But I think any combination of black, turquoise (or a little bit of white, not too much) for the accessories would work. Maybe a big, floppy, oversized flower clipped in your hair, or one of those padded, beaded alice bands rather than a fascinator?

It's a pretty dress. Not dated. For a certain sort of occasion it is a perennial, classic style that would have worked ten or 15 years ago but still works just as well today.

It was dated - looked like the kind of thing that Hobbs were selling about 15-20 years ago. Anything modern looking is likely to be longer and looser I think.

I once bought a dress with a white background for a wedding and was told white at a wedding is a no no, so this with a white jacked would be a step too far I think.

And it also looks very much like the type of thing that Hobbs and Phase Eight etc are still selling now. The OP is in her 60s. It's perfectly nice and perfectly wearable. Not everything has to scream 'this season.'

OP, unfortunately when you post a picture of a dress on an Internet forum its inevitable you will get posters who love it,who hate it & those who say wear it because they think its being kind if you like it. Personally,I would take every comment as a genuine opinion then decide which ones are more in tune with my own thoughts. You mentioned looking around the charity shops. There are also other online platforms which sell pre-loved dresses etc in fact I think thats what one of the sites is called. Perhaps other posters can help you with suggestions in this regard. You sound like you would look amazing regardless of what you wear.

This is lovely. I would add straps around the shoulders 😁

Please don't let negative opinions from some people on here put you off
Why does it matter if it's not cutting edge fashion.
I think a lot of the links people have posted on here as more up to date are horrible and wouldn't suit me anyway.
Wear what you feel comfortable in and what you like.

Wildgoat · 13/03/2026 12:06

Did you misunderstand , 50s costume I think she means 1950s and she didn’t refer to women in their 60s dressing different to their 40s. Did you quote the wrong post?

and I disagree with you, if you’re still dressing in styles from two decades previously it will always look dated, it’s nothing about an age, simply stuff that is two decades old usually looks dated.

Sorry,I didn't mean dressing in styles from 2 decades previously. I was referring to the fact whether your in your 30s, 40s or 60s plus you can still wear the same fashionable clothes with your head held high if the items suit you.

Oops, sorry got it wrong. I should have gone to specsavers😂 Thought it said I can go to the charity shops & not it can go. Anyway I'm sure you'll find something your more confident about & dont have to ask 😀

https://www.roman.co.uk/rochette-bow-detail-jacket-15054008

I’ve been wearing these to weddings and christenings. Like a smarter cardigan but clearly not a work jacket.

I think it’s classic and is exactly what I’d wear, it’s lovely. No idea if it’s dated or not, I tend to go with what I like and feel comfortable in rather than what’s fashion.

Beautiful dress & jacket 😁

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 13/03/2026 16:13

It’s inoffensive but not stylish. People have been wearing similar to weddings for decades.

I agree with this, I also think people should have a little avator of their fave outfits, so you can see if it’s the sort of person you wish style advice from and you aspire to dress like. We all have different tastes and dress differently,

for example the op may look at me in real life and think she’d never want to dress like me, or she may look at me and think I’d love her to give me style advice. And the same for every other poster. You’ve no idea if the person posting is known for being stylish and having an eye for rhe current or walks around looking like a sack of spuds.😂

No cardigan or fascinator. Black shoes handbag & jacket.

@HeadDeskHeadDesk - please do not include me in your basket of Women Over 60 Who Should Be Satisfied With Any Dated, Crappy Old Thing From Hobbs Or Phase Eight.

Thank you.

It is quite dated but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be made to look more modern. Like a PP said, I’d lose the sash and have a black slim belt and black shoes. I’d then go with another colour for accessories, chunky cardigan, such as pink. Pink and teal can look quite fresh. See this pic for an example of how they can work together.

Aaarrgh!!!! My eyes!!!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/03/2026 16:59

I’m not sure I’d wear it to a wedding but you could go navy (patent) thin belt and other accessories. It’s a pretty dress.

Travelcrazy · 13/03/2026 08:23

Thanks for all your replies they are very 50/50. I think if I wear it I will go white jacket and black shoes and bag however if anyone has any links to more suitable dresses I am willing to try other styles etc. I am 64 by the way.
The wallpaper comment had me in fits and it was spot on but it didn't put me off :)

I know you said you’ve decided not to wear it but if you do change your mind I would double check with the bride if you plan on wearing this plus a white jacket. That’s a lot of white.

Wildgoat · 13/03/2026 17:09

Beautiful dress & jacket 😁

And this is the case in point, I look at that and see something very dated, I’d have worn that in the 90s. And being dated is what Roman lers face it is known for, and you look at it and think it’s beautiful.
