Going to a wedding early June and I have bought this, it looks nice on buy not sure if I will go with it yet. I am blonde with a tan 5 feet 3 size 10. Is it ok and if so please can you suggest shoes, bag, jacket or cardigan and a fascinator. Thanks very much

It’s not dated but it’s also not current, I think you can make it more current though, with how you style it, or don’t style it, so don’t go hat or fascinator, you will look dated.

personally I’d wear nude block heel shoes, plain gold jewellery, keep it simple. a nude bag, don’t go black, let the dress do the talking as it’s quite a big pattern and you can likely get away with it.

Travelcrazy · 13/03/2026 07:01

@Wildgoatthanks for your help I have some nude shoes I will try them, out of interest why would black be wrong?

It’s old-fashioned sorry but if you like it it’s fine for a wedding.

Ariana12 · 13/03/2026 07:29

Youve got loads of great replies re accessorising. Just came on to say love the dress!

MinPinSins · 13/03/2026 07:33

It is dated - I think if you are fashionable people at the wedding you could end up feeling a bit dowdy. However, it's perfectly suitable for a wedding and people often do dress pretty dated at weddings.

springawakeningss · 13/03/2026 07:43

I'm not a fan sorry. Reminds me of the wallpaper everyone had for their feature wall in the early 2000s.

But omg that hat that's linked, do people actually wear things like that? 🤣

I’d call it vintage rather than dated!

Agree you could lose the sash; replace with a good quality narrow black leather belt. (And adjust the belt loops to support the belt properly so it stays in the right place.)

Pillbox hats are suddenly hugely fashionable - maybe look for one in black straw.

I would avoid any cardigan - or you’ll be cosplaying MadMen, which is really not what you want. Keep your accessories purely contemporary. And not too dainty.

Agree. This styling sounds spot on.

Definitely no cardigan

And definitely not the ubiquitous pashmina suggested on almost all wedding guest threads!

No to nude shoes: they are dated

DrumsPleaseFab · 13/03/2026 07:51

I like it but I like clothes that are classic

some people say “dated” but it could look really cool with red shoes imo , so not matchy matchy

awaynboilyurheid · 13/03/2026 08:16

Oh no not that hat! The dress is ok but not that stylish I think you could get something more flattering, but I’m in Scotland we go all out at weddings.

Travelcrazy · 13/03/2026 08:23

Thanks for all your replies they are very 50/50. I think if I wear it I will go white jacket and black shoes and bag however if anyone has any links to more suitable dresses I am willing to try other styles etc. I am 64 by the way.
The wallpaper comment had me in fits and it was spot on but it didn't put me off :)

How about a pashmina? I agree with someone else that the black shoes may well be too heavy. There is a brand of shoe and bag that you can have dyed to any colour not sure how expensive it is though. You send the belt along with shoes etc.

It doesn't go down well here if you give your honest opinion on a dress especially if your in a minority. I will just say if you love it,suit it & feel good in it whether it's dated or not doesn't matter. Have a great day.

I knew it!

nowhere in the known universe apart from on mn is a pashmina now a thing

TroubledBloodyMary · 13/03/2026 09:03

Don’t wear a white jacket. It will create a visual cliche and make it look as if you don’t understand your frock in a 21st century context.

We’re pretty much twins in age and proportions, @Travelcrazy. I wouldn’t choose that dress, but if I had to wear it I’d probably look for a cropped (to halfway down your ribs) bomber jacket in suede or leather. And if I didn’t like that idea for a wedding I’d choose a different dress.

AtIusvue · 13/03/2026 09:09
  • It is very dated; however, that’s no reason not to wear something if you like it!
  • I’d remove the sash. It’s far too little girl/ ‘flower girl’ with a sash. If you wanted something to replace it, you could use a thin black patent belt.
  • kitten heel sling backs in black
  • black 10 denier tights
  • wear it with a dress coat
  • Stay away from statement jewellery or adding anything else that is turquoise. I’d stay away from a hat too. Keep it simple.

Enjoy the wedding. I think the dress is lovely and I’m a lot younger than you. I don’t know why age was even relevant. I pick clothes that I like not what’s in or out of fashion.

Badlands1 · 13/03/2026 09:21

@AtIusvue is spot on - a dress coat is much better and agree re the belt/shoes etc

I agree with everything bar the tights, so much of a clash with the white.

shes a tan, so nude legs and shoes, the white jacket and black shoes she wants to wear really will make it dated, and too much white,

Well some of us don’t give a flying ….

TroubledBloodyMary · 13/03/2026 09:30

But surely S&B exists because some people (including the OP, presumably) do?

This!
The main things are that you like it and it suits you. I wouldn't wear either black or white with it, black would flatten it imho and whites are very difficult to match but look awful if they don't match. I would look at navy/ turquoise/grey/ silver accessories. I wouldn't choose boucle/tweedy fabric jacket with that satiny dress. Wedding guests are meant to look joyful, so lifhten everything is my motto. I quite like the idea of a pillbox hat.

That’s fine! But the OP was worried about looking dated

Ophir · 13/03/2026 10:10

there’s no need for any jacket or the like.
