What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:02

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

@DancingNotDrowningthose look great! Where are they from? They’re so flattering, I find it hard to believe anyone would think skinnies would look better. You can see what a great waist you have plus they look really comfy.

I remember skinnies coming in early/mid 2000s when I was early 20s & very cool. Before then it was bootcut. I was horrified as although I am tall and thin I have fat knees and skinnies always looked bad on me, but I worry them for years as there was no alternative. I don’t remember thinking they looked good on many people, tbh, unless you have very long, thin legs without big knees / calves / thighs. Eventually we got used to the silhouette but it wasn’t universally flattering at ALL. I was so happy they became uncool again a few years back and now I can wear looser legs again (which suit me much better - and tbh most people as long as they aren’t massively wide which don’t look great unless you’re very tall)

people saying they still see them - well yes you will, but generally not on anyone who has an interest in looking current, clothes-wise.

Well you’re obviously happy wearing them so carry on if you like them. But haven’t you noticed lots of people wearing wide leg trousers and jeans?

Yes, and most people look dreadful in wide legs, unless they're 6 foot beanpoles.

See, I will be honest, I don’t like thid look at all, i don’t think it’s flattering, but it is on trend. I also don’t find skinnies flattering on most, and they are not on trend.

for me it’s straight, flare or wide legged, and I think there is enough deviation in what’s on trend we can do what works for us and still be current.

Haha, that’s fine - I like it and that’s all I care about. As for “flattering”, I think that’s a word that’s generally used to mean “makes you look small” in fashion terms and I don’t really like it. I’m a UK 12, so not small - without my cardigan you would be able to see that I actually do have a slim waist in comparison with my giant hips, but it’s too cold for that still!

Quite!! I love my boots!

I wear mind with skirts/ dresses and tights.

I don’t wear skinny jeans but mainly because I’m a bit fat.

Quite like girlfriend type styles but honestly don’t care if they’re fashionable or not.

I do wear wideleg trousers but currently none of my jeans are wide leg

To be fair we can find plenty of articles saying the opposite, I’m not going to post as there is an article saying whatever you want it to say. And it’s pointless.

Yes, it rather begs the question of the whole point of fashion articles and returns to the point of 'wear what you like'.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 09/03/2026 16:23

god i've been wearing mine since 2012 and i've never stopped - i basically only wear skinny jeans - literally never thought about if they were in fashion or not - i dont care - i think they look cool so whatever hhaha

Happyjoe · 09/03/2026 16:36

I wonder if in 10 years time everyone will be saying "God, do you remember barrel leg jeans? What were we thinking!"

Same as shell suits. Jesus, that plastic shiny material. Shudder!

I do that all the time! Laughing at yourself shouldn't be something to worry about - it's good fun. (I particularly enjoy laughing at myself in my tightest skinnies Wink)

Not me. I never looked at them and thought they were a good idea.

I love @Judystilldreamsofhorses look!

these are mine, the seem to photograph narrower than they feel but I love them and they’re super comfy

They are very flattering though and look great, they are much narrower and more straight leg than the pps

they look quite straight leg in my photo but they’re defo more barrel - ish in RL. I’m short and love that they come in different lengths as I like a flash of ankle.

Just as contrast, here is me back from reformer Pilates - I had a tight sports vest top underneath the sweatshirt for the actual class. These legging pant things are more akin to skinny jeans, every lump and bump is right there on display. Fine for an all women exercise class but really not at all “flattering” on my very pear shaped figure. I looked equally awful in skinny jeans!

What's wrong with skinny jeans?
StephensLass1977 · 09/03/2026 18:36

Nothing wrong at all. Someone somewhere decides what's in, and everyone rushes like sheep to buy it. It's business, that's all.

Skinny jeans suit me, so I wear them. I wear them with ruched ankle boots or trainers.

DancingNotDrowning · 09/03/2026 18:48

@Judystilldreamsofhorses i know you said you don’t care about flattering - and im
with you there are so many more appealing adjectives for your clothes before you lean into flattering but I do think the barrel jeans on you are both stylish AND flattering

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 09/03/2026 19:23

PandaKitty · 09/03/2026 15:23

It’s annoying as I have a few long line blazers and loafers that I loved wearing with my skinnies but these don’t look right with wide leg/baggier styles. I have pointed boots with a low heel that I’m wearing with my wide legs but these are not comfortable for walking about in that much. And then you need longer ones for wearing with heels and regular length ones for wearing with trainers or flats

So wear a slim fitting bootcut with them? M&S Eva are great

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 09/03/2026 19:28

There are loads of different style jeans to buy which is great, I just wish they’d get rid of high rise! It’s so unflattering on me. It just emphasises my pouch belly. I don’t wear skinnies but have a range of wide, straight and kick flare jeans that I like but would love even more with a mid rise!

Allmarbleslost · 09/03/2026 19:41

I havent noticed anyone wearing skinny jeans for a long time. The shops are still selling them though so plenty of people must be wearing them!

BurntBroccoli · 09/03/2026 20:23

Happyjoe · 08/03/2026 22:04

I can't for the life of me get proper bootcut jeans/kick flares, I've given up looking. They're all baggy from the thigh onwards, look stupid. In the old days they'd be slim fit past the knee then softly flare out - looked great with sandals in the summer.

I know what you mean - I had the best pair from Gap - they fit so perfectly though quite low waisted compared to jeans nowadays.

Could you perhaps alter the leg width slightly to taper your jeans in on the thigh? I’ve done that before - really simple if you have a sewing machine.

BurntBroccoli · 09/03/2026 20:32

Brightlittlecanary · 09/03/2026 07:49

It always makes me smile, people saying they are coming back. Sadly they are not, but folks say it every season, like a desperate wish. They have been out of fashion for some time op. When something swings this far away from something it generally takes a long time indeed to swing back and right now people are still embaracing the shape.

but flared, relaxed straight, barrel or wide leg is on trend, and the trick to wide leg is to get tnem fitting through the hips and upper thighs then widening, you need to try on lots of pairs to find the ones which work for your body. This isn’t a style that if it fits it works. This season it is not super wide.

however I agree with others if you like skinnies wear them.

i have these and fhey are super flattering on. Ones less fitted over the hips and upper legs do nothing for me and make me look like I’ve a flat arse and about two sizes bigger, where as my daughter looks great in them. So body shape is key,

https://www.meandem.com/wide-kickflare-jean-mid-blue-wash

These look great! Exactly the type I wore and really suited in the early 2000s. Nice high waist too. Pricy though!

Oh no, you look lovely, it wasn’t you it was the jeans, they sort of barrel out at the sides, which I get is thr name, just not a Jean shape I like.x

The cut is great, very flattering, they are actually mid rise, the model does make them look higher though, in real life they aren’t,x

I've just carried on wearing my skinny jeans as I couldn't care less about fashion. I wouldn't be see dead in the current styles of wide leg, carrot and whatever hideous styles are deemed currently fashionable.

Why are you on Style and Beauty if you care so little 🙅‍♀️

Nellodee · 10/03/2026 00:02

There is an enormous difference between style and fashion, to be fair.

MyUnderpants · 10/03/2026 02:42

Bootcut and flares are different things aren't they? Bootcut remind me of what 30 something women wore in the 90s and would get from Next or M&S but flares are more retro in a good way, like the ME+EM ones above.
