Welcome to style mavens old and new to continue our chats.
Hopefully more bling if there's another banquet on the horizon?

It's interesting that so many of those 50s evening gowns are far more revealing than what is worn for glitzy events these days. Not that there are anywhere near as many of those!

Maireas · 12/04/2026 09:17

Those evening gowns are stunning, I love all the embroidery, and I'm looking forward to seeing them. I know it was fashionable, but the dresses really emphasise the late Queen's tiny waist. Very much an hour glass look.

I wonder if one of TLQ's Barbour macs and a headscarf are in a corner of the exhibition? I always felt that ensemble, accessorised with her dogs and horses, was when she felt most comfortable!

The Queen was born at a similar time to my DM. Corsets were still a thing for people of that age when I was born in the 60s. I remember my DM wearing a corset when I was a teenager, so late 70s at least.

The Danish Court has announced that Queen Mary’s father has died in Tasmania aged 84. It must be hard being so far away - although she was able to see him when in Australia last month, which she may well have known would be for the last time.

eggandonion · 12/04/2026 10:55

Poor Queen Mary being so far away 😕
My mother didn't wear corsets but did have a very firm girdle.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 12/04/2026 10:57

One of my grandmothers was of the same generation as the queen and the other about 10 years older but they never wore corsets! But neither of them were in the UK.

I saw some of them in an exhibition in 2013 and they are indeed tiny!

Thank you for sharing that review @PoppySeedBagelRedux- I’m booked for later in the year and looking forward to it. I’m always fascinated by the subtle nods to the countries that the royals visit or host - the colours, the chosen designer, the jewellery etc. I know we sometimes chuckle at the ‘literal dressing’ but it’s rarely a coincidence.

They wore pink roll ons 😂 or girdles. Corset suggests glamour. I can remember my Granny trying to get into one and they were definitely not glamorous.

HollyhockDays · 12/04/2026 11:22

I’m not sure about Meghan’s chartreuse dress. It looks a bit crumpled. She’s also gone for a low make up look (and looks lovely) that maybe doesn’t match the dress.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 12/04/2026 11:38

Oh dear Meghan, that dress is awful. Chartreuse is not a colour that looks good on anyone, remember Kate's Erdem curtains horror? The only person to look good in it was Nicole Kidman at the 1997 Oscars in her embroidered John Galliano gown!

Choux · 12/04/2026 11:43

Leti wearing a beautifully fitting suit at an event in Spain. I prefer slimmer leg trousers as to me they look neater.

i am undecided whether i like that long strip of the blouse hanging below the waistband. It adds interest but i half want to tuck it in the trousers or retie it as it seems too long.

Meg’s dress is spectacularly awful.Looks like a Shein copy. Im sure it was vv expensive but it doesnt look like it…that zip!

RomainingCalm · 12/04/2026 12:03

Yes, Meghan’s dress is horrible. It doesn’t even look good on the model - I’m struggling to think of anyone that could look good in that colour, style and fabric.

Where is everyone seeing Meghan’s dress? I can’t see a link.

Yes and especially someone referencing a model wearing it. Where can we find that?

It’s not hard to post a link or a photo and it keeps the chat going more as 10 or 20 people won’t each go off and google to try and find what you are talking about. If people are struggling to post links or photos we can help explain.

Oh dear! My own fault for asking to see it 😁

That is an ugly dress.

DoNotSitDownNextToMe · 12/04/2026 13:04

Satin is an unforgiving material!

You probably missed the post with a link about this upthread. I think we liked the suit, the cut colour and fit, but were a bit divided on the blouse. I really like it, and I don't usually like tie necks!
A good look for her, imo.

I'm an outlier here - I like Meghan's dress. I love chartreuse, it's a colour I wear a lot because of my skin tone, and I think it suits her. I think the issue is probably her posture - she's engaged in conversation and leaning forward a bit, but otherwise I like it.

OP posts:
KnickerlessParsons · 12/04/2026 15:02

oh gosh! That dress does nothing for Meg. Neither the colour nor the cut.

I think thats unfair. It’s not hard to Goggle either. I couldnt post a link as I was in the hairdressers with dodgy WiFi!
