Bought this dress but now that it’s here, I don’t know if it’s okay for holy communion or if it’s even nice. Thoughts please?

It looks like a summer dress? It might look nicer on than on the hanger?

MiddleAgedDread · 23/02/2026 19:50

It’s a bit granny nightie for my liking! What are you planning to wear it with? It looks quite casual for a communion. Is it your child or are you a guest?

ismydressugly · 23/02/2026 19:51

My child. I thought a cardigan. It is summery.

Child’s dress I thought holy communion ones were white. Guest dress, eh it’s ok.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 23/02/2026 19:53

Is your child making their holy communion? A white dress is the norm.

Girasoli · 23/02/2026 19:53

Are you planning to wear anything over your shoulders? Depending on the church there might be a few raised eyebrows.

I think it would look nice with a cardigan that's the same dark pink as the little flowers.

BobbieTables · 23/02/2026 20:40

I don't know if things have substantially changed but that doesn't look like a first holy Communion dress to me. They're usually white. I'd text the class WhatsApp group to check what the test of the kids are wearing.

Harrietsaunt · 23/02/2026 20:43

Aren’t they supposed to be white?

MissyB1 · 23/02/2026 20:43

I’m confused, is it for the child who is making their first communion? They are usually in white?

It's her child doing the communion not her.

Adults also can also take their first holy communion and generally don’t wear white. Guests can wear anything else that’s suitable.

candycanetime · 23/02/2026 20:45

That doesn’t look like a child dress, it looks like an adults dress. Not sure about the bust part being emphasised if a child is wearing it? Also shouldn’t it be white?

candycanetime · 23/02/2026 20:46

Just seen it’s for your child’s holy communion. Glad that it’s an adult wearing it, but I still think you could find something nicer. It’s ok, but you could find better.

Only RC do Holy Communion.

It isn’t quite suitable - too much cleavage/shoulder, and the colours are wrong.

A brightly coloured suit with heels would work better, otherwise something a bit more fitted/structured - what else do you have?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/02/2026 20:49

I can’t tell the size from the pic.
if it is for the child making her first communion, then no. First communion dresses are white and more formal. The communicants are “brides of Christ” and first communion dresses traditionally look like little wedding dresses. Mine was very long and lacy!

If it’s for you a guest, it’s fine.

edit: came back to correct a typo, and have seen it’s for a guest. It’s fine.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/02/2026 20:49

Is it a dress for you when you child takes first communion?

I'm not catholic but I thought first communion dresses dresses were white? I admit I think I'm basing that on a Billy Joel song so it may be nonsense!

For you, I think probably you need something a bit more 'wedding guest' than that? Not MOB or anything! Just a bit more 'occasion wear' iyswim

Not so.

The daughter wears a white dress and the son a black suit and tie usually.

Parents tend to wear wedding guest type attire as you said.

I was under the impression the Protestants don’t do FHC because anyone can have communion in their churches?

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 23/02/2026 20:52

I'm assuming this is the dress for the mother of the child making their communion?

If you're Irish/NI then it's probably not dressy enough. Dunno about uk though.

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 23/02/2026 20:53

Can we see it on you? Or a model?

Notmymarmosets · 23/02/2026 20:55

In England, with a cardigan or a jacket, it would be fine to wear as a guest.

Girasoli · 23/02/2026 21:13

I wore a smart flowery tea dress and a cardigan for DS1s holy communion in the UK. DH wore a suit.

Most of the parents wore something between 'Sunday best' and day time wedding guest outfits.

They can't. They have to be confirmed. Similar process. I was confirmed into the Anglican church as an adult: the children aged 7.

TalulahJP · 23/02/2026 22:11

a white suit jacket over the top would cover the shoulders and hide the cleavage?
