Bought this dress but now that it’s here, I don’t know if it’s okay for holy communion or if it’s even nice. Thoughts please?

Sorry but it’s pretty horrible. Something my nan would’ve worn 50 years ago . Where do you live? In Ireland people get pretty fancy for communions.

They can't. They have to be confirmed. Similar process. I was confirmed into the Anglican church as an adult: the children aged 7.

Confirmation and first holy communion are 2 separate things in the Catholic Church. I took FHC at age 7 and confirmed age 14

Holy communion - yay
First holy communion - nay

Doryismyspiritanimal · 23/02/2026 22:30

can you tell us your budget and style/body type requirements op? I am not a huge fan of the dress, although it prob looks better on, the hive mind of MN can maybe find a few options.

Where I am, it tends to be more formal-to dressy, so a notch under daytime wedding guest, but a few rungs up from Easter/Christmas....although lots of people are more casual now, lots of people don't dress up at all

this is just an idea, this is my taste, I am not saying it's trendy and it depends on what you'd feel comfortable in

opinionateddanceparty · 23/02/2026 22:43

Are you Irish Catholic? I'd probably recommend jazzing it up a bit if so. You might get away with it with heels / blazer / tan, but if you have time to keep shopping it would be no harm.

You are right and my memory served me badly. I did both simultaneously as an adult.

DD and DS took their first communions aged 7. DD was confirmed aged 13/14, DS chose not to be.

I stand corrected.

First communion in the Anglican church is a nice dress, not necessarily a white dress or even a party dress. Parents dress up for it no more than usual.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 23/02/2026 23:46

It’s awful.

SophiaSW1 · 24/02/2026 00:34

I honk you’d have to see it on to give a fair idea.

FairyBatman · 24/02/2026 01:21

I really don’t like it, I also don’t think it’s conservative enough for the occasion.

caringcarer · 24/02/2026 02:50

I think it needs to cover your shoulders and top of arms also it's too low neck. You need something more modest.

CarpetDiem · 24/02/2026 03:31

Looks a bit low cut for a first communion

Moonandstarsandsun · 24/02/2026 03:43

No it’s awful

Daffodilstime · 24/02/2026 04:08

Sorry op no it’s not very nice. Ok for sunbathing in the garden but not a dress for an event.

falalalaa · 24/02/2026 04:11

It’s not nice at all. I love a nice dress, this isn’t. It looks scruffy

The daughter wears a white dress and the son a black suit and tie usually.

Parents tend to wear wedding guest type attire as you said.

I was under the impression the Protestants don’t do FHC because anyone can have communion in their churches?

Protestants don’t do communion at all.

Lampzade · 24/02/2026 06:09

Is it for you Op?
Anyway it’s ugly

SideshowAuntSallyxx · 24/02/2026 06:33

I don't like it reminds me of Cath Kitson bags and the two colours don't work together, but the style with a jacket or cardigan for church would fine.

Oh yes they do.

RampantIvy · 24/02/2026 06:43

In response to the OP. The dress is too casual and too summery. Won't you be cold in it?

ladyamy · 24/02/2026 06:45

Never heard of it happening, but fair enough 🤷‍♀️

It happens every Sunday, and depending on the church, on other days too!

SchoolDilemma17 · 24/02/2026 06:47

Not suitable for the child (girls wear a white dress, you can also hire one), also not suitable for the mother (parents dress up!)

Protestants definitely don't make their Communion.

And isn't it obvious that this is for the mother of the child. Of course the child will be wearing white if it's a girl , boys wear suits etc. Honestly 😂

Stickytoffeetartt · 24/02/2026 06:52

Not keen op sorry, it's a bit too booby for church.
