Bought this dress but now that it’s here, I don’t know if it’s okay for holy communion or if it’s even nice. Thoughts please?

I'm wearing this to my son's First holy communion

The dress is for me, of course dd is in white!

But I think it’s back to the drawing board! It looks a lot nicer on the model than a Hanger but I haven’t tried it on yet.

Sorry op but that looks like something my grandma would have worn to bed.

Only RC do Holy Communion.

It isn’t quite suitable - too much cleavage/shoulder, and the colours are wrong.

A brightly coloured suit with heels would work better, otherwise something a bit more fitted/structured - what else do you have?

Absolutely not true. Most mums wear dresses or wedding guest type outfits around here. That dress would be quite demure compared to many I’ve seen.

Do you have a link to the website to see what it looks like on the model?

I’m confused, is it for the child who is making their first communion? They are usually in white?

Her child is doing communion, this is the dress she as the mother would wear…

Namechangerage · 24/02/2026 07:03

I’d go with a sleeve OP.

it’s a bit wishy washy.

Protestants definitely don't make their Communion.

And isn't it obvious that this is for the mother of the child. Of course the child will be wearing white if it's a girl , boys wear suits etc. Honestly 😂

Protestants take part in holy communion every Sunday. The church I used to go to also did a first holy communion for children. DD took hers when she was 6, then she was confirmed at 13.

I don't know why you are adamant that this doesn't happen. It was my lived experience.

falalalaa · 24/02/2026 07:10

do I just need coffee or has the colour of the dress changed?

But they don't 'make' their holy communion as a sacrament.

It happens every Sunday, and depending on the church, on other days too!

I was brought up in Church of Scotland and I’ve never heard of anyone taking communion if they weren’t Catholic. Ye learn something new every day!

Fridaysgirl17 · 24/02/2026 08:01

My son is making his communion in May here in Ireland & everyone gets dolled up so I got him to help me choose a dress & he didn't do a bad job,it matches the blazer of his suit too

binnibonnieboo · 24/02/2026 08:08

Well in Ireland it wouldnt be dressy enough, people go full glam. But I know it's different over there. It looks like a pretty casual summer dress to me though. Maybe you are not in UK as you say it's sunny?

ZenNudist · 24/02/2026 08:14

It's not great but might depend on your own personal style. I can see it looking good on someone quirky with outlandish hair and some clashing ugly shoes (moss green velvet platforms).

You will need to cover the cleavage and shoulders but tbh there's lots of inappropriate dressing at my church one woman turned up in full length sequins with a Cape. Her dd was similarly decked up in white!

Brightlittlecanary · 24/02/2026 08:17

I’m sorry to be blunt but that’s bloody awful it looks cheap, is shapeless and the colours and patterns don’t work, you can’t front up in that and a cardie.

What is the difference?

The Church of England has communion services most Sundays.

massistar · 24/02/2026 08:37

No holy communion in the Church of Scotland but the Anglican Church is pretty close to Catholicism in terms of rituals without the Pope being head of it. Blame it on Henry VIII!

not sure the dress is dressy enough OP!

The Church of Scotland's website begs to differ https://www.churchofscotland.org.uk/about-us/departments/faith-action-programme-committees-and-departments/children-and-young-people/listing-pages/pages-chilndren/children-and-communion

Though elsewhere it mentions communion as only happening 4 times a year, so not a regular thing at all

You’ve hugely misunderstood.

In the Catholic Church, you cannot take communion until you have completed your ‘First Holy Communion’. This is a short course learning about the Bible and Sacraments, and the event itself is a celebration Mass where all the children receive communion for the first time and then celebrate with a party. It’s a specific event.

In the CofE - we have confirmation that happens before you can take Holy Communion every Sunday.
A much lower key affair than Catholic First Communion but similar in meaning.

I wore a white pinafore to mine and my family attended in smart attire. I would have been 12. We then had a tea and cake do in the church hall. Admittedly i am in my mid 50s so this was almost 40 years ago but my daughters were offered confirmation classes and confirmation 10/15 years ago, so they could partake in holy communion on Sundays. They opted not to so don't take communion, but rarely attend church either.

Terser · 24/02/2026 09:41

Sorry, I don't think the dress is right for several reasons:

  • Not smart enough for the occasion
  • Possibly a bit too low-cut and sleeveless (esp if you kneel for communion and the server gets a full birds' eye view)
  • Just an ugly dress in any case

It’s a nice enough dress but not for a parent at holy communion event. I agree with pp about the Irish my stepdad’s family are Irish and they go very glam.

It depends on the denomination. C of E every Sunday at least but a 'happy clappy' might not have it at all.

Then there are the Jehovah's Witnesses, who don't call it communion but once a year hand round bred and wine that no one (apart from possibly a couple of males) eats / drinks.
