Bought this dress but now that it’s here, I don’t know if it’s okay for holy communion or if it’s even nice. Thoughts please?

No one will be looking at you. All eyes will be on the kids.

its a lovely dress btw - go for it.

sellersvin · 24/02/2026 17:51

That dress is too casual. Not suitable for a Roman Catholic mass. You want something with sleeves at least and the colours are more picnic in the garden.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/02/2026 17:53

Its a lovely dress with a cardigan. Its not far off easter and has lovely spring colours. Id wear it.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 24/02/2026 18:06

For a holy communion you need something smarter, especially in April as it's not the sort of dress you can wear anything other than sandals with so if it's blowing a gale you'll need a plan B.
You could look for a jumpsuit that you could wear a jacket over and something that can be worn with sandals and shoes? Phase 8 is pretty good for that sort of thing. Do you have a smart jacket or coat you can "press into service" rather than have to buy an entire new outfit? . If you take a pic of that, then look for suggestions to wear with it?

ViciousCurrentBun · 24/02/2026 18:30

I don’t like the dress, sorry. But it’s not smart enough regardless.

Historically very devout Catholics believed in transubstantiation which means The bread and wine really becomes the body of Christ. Hence why in days of yore Christianity had rumours of cannibalism as The Roman Empire heard that they took the body and blood.

Protestants believe it’s a representation of the body of Christ.

Methodists do actually take communion but they don’t have actual wine as supposed to be teetotal, they also have individual cups so no communal cup either. United Reformed Church is less formal as well and they all have open table which means you do not have to be confirmed.

High Anglican Church which is what I spent my younger years in wanted you to be confirmed to take communion. I was confirmed after a few months of lessons at the Vicarage with other kids aged 13. Smells and bells and we did have to confess our sins before confirmation, given a handy tick list.

Assuming the child is part of the annual cohort it will be one of the Sundays closest to Corpus Christi (the relevant feast day) which falls on 4th June this year.

It can be any time of year for an individual but the ubiquitous bunch of parish 6/7 year olds will be prepped for FHC masses which align with the feast.

Surely not 6/7, that's too young? 7 or 8 I'd say, well at least in Ireland

I was 6 when I made my first holy communion, but that was in the 70s, the age may have changed since then.

That is not an historic Catholic belief. Transubstantiation is THE belief that underpins most of what Catholics believe. In each consecration, the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. Hence the huge importance of the tabernacle in Catholic Churches.

You have to have reached the age of reason, I thought this was 7 at a minimum

That’s still the current position of the Catholic Church. That’s what children are taught before a Catholic First Holy Communion.

Yes, this is not historical, it is the current belief.

So it’s a spring holy communion in April so I thought it was spring-y. It looked lovely on the model (pic attached). We’re Catholic 😂 in Scotland. I’m nearly 30 and size 10/12. As I said I would be wearing a cardigan with it. But not after hearing everyone’s opinions 😂 think I might look at Phase 8 or similar.

It’s not my cup of tea, but I’m not a floral person. However, I’m 37 and I wouldn’t be looking at Phase 8 for another 30 years I hope 🫣
For my DS’s communion (4 years ago) I wore a Topshop cornflower blue oversized/dad fit suit, so blazer and ‘mensy’ trousers with a bodysuit, with heels. It ended up being a sunny day so I took off the blazer.
I haven’t RTFT but don’t conform to looking at clothing brands that you feel obliged to look at from this post, but wouldn’t wear ordinarily. Wear what is ‘you’

It was done by school year, I was a July baby. We all made our first holy communion in May I think, so I would have been nearly 7. I remember it all clearly, the ceremony at the church, my white dress, veil, and sandals (which had been worn by both my older sisters before me!) Then back to our school for a party. There’s a photo of me outside my classroom.

OP, Oh good grief - don't go near Phase 8. I think with a cardigan over it, it's fine.

I am 30 years older than the poster I'm quoting. Why do you think I might want to shop at Phase 8?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/02/2026 20:14

My SIL’s SIL wore a colorful flower print Zara dress to her daughter’s christening. Catholic.

PhaedraWas · 24/02/2026 20:17

ismydressugly · 24/02/2026 06:56

The dress is for me, of course dd is in white!

But I think it’s back to the drawing board! It looks a lot nicer on the model than a Hanger but I haven’t tried it on yet.

I've got to page 3 and the alternative suggestions so far are awful. There's a white jumpsuit suit which is particularly awful. I much prefer your choice.

PhaedraWas · 24/02/2026 20:20

rightoguvnor · 24/02/2026 10:17

I’m afraid I don’t like the colours together, it looks like a Drumstick sweet.

It does and that's lovely. It's much nicer than any of the alternatives suggested, which if anything are getting worse as the thread moves on.

Charliede1182 · 24/02/2026 21:28

I was actually just talking about my daughter's communion today - as a non Catholic I had never seen a communion and she just went in a nice dress that she had worn for a couple of parties.

I felt mortified for her when all the other girls turned up like little brides, like "my big fat gypsy wedding" in miniature. Veils, tiaras, full face of makeup. It was beyond creepy actually.

Maybe look at a few pictures of last year's communion at that school to get a feeling for the dress code.

Haha, I don’t, sorry! I don’t know how I’ll be feeling or dressing in 30 years either…
I think my point was, she doesn’t need to be looking in Phase 8

pomers · 24/02/2026 22:06

It’s not nice for anything, it looks like a nightie. Sorry

Ohyeahitsme · 24/02/2026 22:52

RosesAndHellebores · 23/02/2026 23:34

You are right and my memory served me badly. I did both simultaneously as an adult.

DD and DS took their first communions aged 7. DD was confirmed aged 13/14, DS chose not to be.

I stand corrected.

First communion in the Anglican church is a nice dress, not necessarily a white dress or even a party dress. Parents dress up for it no more than usual.

Guess it depends on your Anglican church - the ones I've attended have only given communion to those who are confirmed which was done in year 6 and 7. And first communion wasn't a thing. I was confirmed as an adult because I couldn't receive communion without it, I wore jeans as did the rest of my confirmation class, they were slightly dressier than my usual Sunday jeans but still jeans!

Hollyhobbi · 24/02/2026 23:17

Playingvideogames · 24/02/2026 10:00

I don’t get why a load of Anglicans/Protestants/whatever always turn up on Catholic threads to insist they know better? How is this relevant?

Presumably there are a lot more Protestants in the UK than Catholics so it’s just a numbers thing?

RosesAndHellebores · 25/02/2026 03:01

@Playingvideogames the op did not say whether it was an RC or Anglican church.

@Ohyeahitsme the Anglican church is broad. My version is high - sung mass, bells, and the children do take first communion.
