Bought this dress but now that it’s here, I don’t know if it’s okay for holy communion or if it’s even nice. Thoughts please?

In the CofE - we have confirmation that happens before you can take Holy Communion every Sunday.
A much lower key affair than Catholic First Communion but similar in meaning.

I wore a white pinafore to mine and my family attended in smart attire. I would have been 12. We then had a tea and cake do in the church hall. Admittedly i am in my mid 50s so this was almost 40 years ago but my daughters were offered confirmation classes and confirmation 10/15 years ago, so they could partake in holy communion on Sundays. They opted not to so don't take communion, but rarely attend church either.

I don’t get why a load of Anglicans/Protestants/whatever always turn up on Catholic threads to insist they know better? How is this relevant?

Gettingbysomehow · 24/02/2026 10:02

Not really no. She should really have a white dress and arms covered. I made one for a friends child, she didnt want to buy one that would just be worn once, out of spare fabric I use to make druid robes. We are not the same religion.
Amazon sell communion dresses of all kinds and all price ranges.

The dress is for me, of course dd is in white!

But I think it’s back to the drawing board! It looks a lot nicer on the model than a Hanger but I haven’t tried it on yet.

Sorry didnt read thread as usual. Looks fine to me if you iron it first and wear a jacket or cardigan. I dont think bare arms are suitable for church. I was a catholic once 😀 I love it but then I am obssessed with yellow at the moment. Its such a lovely spring colour.

Rightly nor wrongly because this is actually a thread about a dress but there are several people on this thread discussing religious practices. I was quite enjoying the discussion and wanted to add my understanding of what some aspects of the Anglican church do because some posters didnt seem to realise there are similar practices in m other areas of the church.

Please tell me- where do I insist I know better?

I don't know better but threads like this I I believe are good. I've learnt a couple of extra nuggets about catholic first communion today reading this. Maybe my comments may help some one else learn something they didnt 100% realise. I thought it was a conversation (on the side now the original post). I have certainly not meant any offence to anyone. Im certainly not juding anyone and apologise if my comments make you think I'm saying I know better.

rightoguvnor · 24/02/2026 10:17

I’m afraid I don’t like the colours together, it looks like a Drumstick sweet.

This isn't a Catholic thread it's a thread about a bloody dress which has been hijacked by people arguing about which denomination takes communion (CofE do they just don't take First Holy Communion).

You could also ask how is your comment relevant to a thread about a dress in Style and Beauty.

Protestants definitely don't make their Communion.

And isn't it obvious that this is for the mother of the child. Of course the child will be wearing white if it's a girl , boys wear suits etc. Honestly 😂

They do. I do.

Communion services on Sundays and Wednesdays at our village church. It’s C of E.

You also could ask why so many ill informed Catholics turn up on a thread about a dress in Style and Beauty.

The OP neglected to mention that she was Catholic in her first post.

Protestants don’t do communion at all.

CofE are Protestants and mist definitely do take Communion. I think you are thinking of Non-conformists, e.g. Methodists, Baptists etc.

You are right and my memory served me badly. I did both simultaneously as an adult.

DD and DS took their first communions aged 7. DD was confirmed aged 13/14, DS chose not to be.

I stand corrected.

First communion in the Anglican church is a nice dress, not necessarily a white dress or even a party dress. Parents dress up for it no more than usual.

Is that the norm in Anglican churches? I remember being very confused as a child when described their confirmation in terms I associated with FHC. I understood most Anglicans treated FHC/confirmation as one event.

In RC churches its Reconciliation in the run up to FHC (yr 2) and Confirmation from the nearest available bishop at yr 9 age and they all distinct sacraments with different preps.

@ismydressugly what is the culture at your church? Some are more glam than others depending on the congregation mix. In my area congregations are pretty casual and parents/relatives would wear a mix of suits/business casual for the men with summer dresses appearing on some of the women. Full on wedding attire would be a bit OTT. I would suggest going with the flow at your own church.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/02/2026 10:33

We had Eucharist at our Anglican Church. But didn’t get confirmed or anything there. Then attended a convent school as teenager where there was communion but of course I didn’t take it as Protestant. I was damned anyway! 🤣

FuzzyPuffling · 24/02/2026 10:34

Playingvideogames · 23/02/2026 20:51

The daughter wears a white dress and the son a black suit and tie usually.

Parents tend to wear wedding guest type attire as you said.

I was under the impression the Protestants don’t do FHC because anyone can have communion in their churches?

Not so.
You should be confirmed ( teenage upwards), ie make an adult commitment to Christ.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/02/2026 10:37

Protestants don’t do communion at all.

And this is super-untrue!

sundayvibeswig22 · 23/02/2026 22:16

Sorry but it’s pretty horrible. Something my nan would’ve worn 50 years ago . Where do you live? In Ireland people get pretty fancy for communions.

Same in Scotland.

Because several people are insisting that Anglicans don't take Communion. It's pretty offensive.

As to the dress, God loves you whatever!

Playingvideogames · 24/02/2026 10:45

No, we’re saying they don’t do a First Holy Communion, which is a specific event. Not that they don’t take communion in general.

Protestants definitely don't make their Communion.

Yes, we absolutely do a First Holy Communion! Certainly in the C of E we do. Both my kids did. Special occasion, Bishop, big white dress for the girls, etc etc.

It would be great if people didn't keep pontificating about what "they" do (or don't do) from a standpoint of obvious ignorance.

cinquanta · 24/02/2026 11:07

ladyamy · 24/02/2026 07:47

I was brought up in Church of Scotland and I’ve never heard of anyone taking communion if they weren’t Catholic. Ye learn something new every day!

The Church of Scotland

“Holy Communion is a sacrament of God's grace and unconditional love. The Church encourages people of all ages to share in this sacrament, as it strengthens our relationships with each other and with Christ.”

corblimeyguvnr · 24/02/2026 11:11

When is the event?

Not sure about the first quote, but the term ‘make their communion’ in the second implies the First Holy Communion ceremony. At least where I am (Ireland) ‘making’ ones communion is only ever used in this sense. Otherwise people take communion.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 23/02/2026 19:53

Is your child making their holy communion? A white dress is the norm.

It’s for an adult I think…not the child…

mrsgilfeathers · 24/02/2026 11:59

RampantIvy · 24/02/2026 07:09

Protestants take part in holy communion every Sunday. The church I used to go to also did a first holy communion for children. DD took hers when she was 6, then she was confirmed at 13.

I don't know why you are adamant that this doesn't happen. It was my lived experience.

We have a communion service every 3 months in my Protestant church, definitely not every Sunday. I suppose they all vary 🤷🏼‍♀️

Terser · 24/02/2026 12:12

Either way, the quotes are wrong.

Protestants do take communion.

Protestants take Holy Communion.

Protestants can most certainly have a First Holy Communion (as I mentioned in my earlier comment, both my children did this in the Church of England. Special occasion, Bishop, pretty white dresses for the girls).

This may sound a bit repetitious. But I've been genuinely shocked by some of the posts on this thread. People confidently coming out with things which are absolutely untrue, and presenting them as facts.

Seriously. Seriously. Before people start posting their assumptions about other people's religious practices, PLEASE at least have a quick Google to check whether you're right or not. Otherwise it looks ignorant at best, and really offensive at worst..

ChristmasStars · 24/02/2026 12:21

This thread is great!

Regarding the dress, it's a no from me, but OP has already come to that conclusion.

Regarding communion, I'm Protestant but not Anglican. I grew up Methodist, have been to a Baptist church and am now in what someone earlier referred to as a "happy clappy" church. Regular communion in all. Weekly in our current church and anyone who trusts in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour is welcome to take it.

Just to chuck my tuppence worth in.

Hope you find a good outfit, @ismydressugly
