Do you remove make up on a longish haul night flight?

We’re flying overnight next Saturday and board the plane at 9.30pm. It’s such a long time since we’ve travelled long haul and overnight I’m not sure what I did before. Would you just keep your make up on and accept the dryness and crustiness the next morning or do you remove it completely then reapply when you get to your destination?
Going make up free for me isn’t an option. I’m 51, white as a ghost with dark circles and some broken veins. No one needs to see that, especially me!

Dont wear makeup at all, you’ll just be sleeping in it! Yuck!

RocknRollBand · 08/02/2026 18:22

I wear make up every day but not on flights. I just did an overnight flight yesterday. I don't care what I look like at the airport or on the plane. I don't know any of those people, only my husband. They don't know that I look worse than I usually do or that I can look amazing. Nor do they care. It was great when I got here and went to bed because I didn't have to wash my face properly.

JugglingMyNuts · 08/02/2026 18:24

I agree with PP that more people are wearing less makeup. So much that I only notice when people have a full face of make up on.

OP I guess you should do what ever makes you feel better but thinking not having make up on means not making an effort seems to be very old fashioned. I travel business on flights and most women are in their flight pjs on long haul without make up.

dogsarebetterthanppl · 08/02/2026 18:25

i have never flew in my life and don't intend to in the near future, but i would use a gradual tan before going and have a brow tint and lash lift/tint or lash extensions (i always have lash extensions but you might not) then take makeup off with cleansing balm and wet wipes use a thick moisturiser and tinted lip balm before sleep, then apply as much makeup as i could manage before landing. believe me, if your brows and lashes are done and you have a colour to your face, it will make all the difference when not made up.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/02/2026 18:27

My make-up has never, ever felt uncomfy.
I'd wear foundation, concealer, blusher, powder and lippy. I'd remove for a kip, moisturise and reapply afterwards.

Im a bare face sort, but I sympathise with your preference to not go bare faced.
I would recommend using some moisturiser with a dab of self tanning lotion for the week prior to the flight. That way you will have some tint to your skin without using makeup. You won’t be pale. You won’t have greasy skin. And the dark circles will be masked. I am also in my 50s.

Edited

I was going to suggest this as well. Facial fake tan and loads of moisturiser and lip balm should see you through @thedogdaysareover51

holycrapballs · 08/02/2026 18:31

I’d remove it and use a really good serum and moisturiser or even a clear mask. Then I’d reapply in the morning.

I don’t care about sitting on the plane in an overnight mask/ eye pads. Unless I had a crack of dawn flight I’m not going with nothing on my face!

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 18:31

@JugglingMyNuts I’m not talking about women in flights with no make up on, I’m thinking about when I meet pals for lunch or dinner and they don’t have a scrap of make up on or brushed their hair. I find that strange. Especially when I’ve nearly killed myself to allow time to get ready and arrive on time.
I don’t usually look as if I’ve got a full face of make up on. I wear lots of nice Korean skincare and sheer, light make up. I would probably look as if I’ve got no make up on as I’m so pasty usually.

@ilovepixieI actually do care. If I meet any of my friends and they have no make up on I find it quite rude that they couldn’t be bothered 😂

Seriously Shock

BauhausOfEliott · 08/02/2026 18:32

I always wear makeup on flights. I keep it pretty light though.

If I’m flying long-haul I take face wipes (the only time I ever use them; I usually use proper cleansers) and I usually remove my makeup during the flight, then moisturise my skin and reapply it before landing. I also always take a hydrating face mist and apply that frequently which makes a real difference.

doobaz · 08/02/2026 18:33

I'm 51 and never wear makeup because I look better without it. I don't like the idea that people may judge me for this and think that I don't make an effort. Hmm

Kendodd · 08/02/2026 18:34

Another non make-up wearer so never troubled by such problems.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 08/02/2026 18:34

Vivi0 · 08/02/2026 18:13

And for those saying no one else cares-I actually do care and judge other people that don’t wear make up. I’d never say anything but it’s how I feel.

Judging women for not wearing make up is wild!

I don’t actually know anyone who wears make up on a daily basis anymore.

I find it quite aging. And dated.

More and more people are wearing less make up, especially younger generations.

The focus seems to be on skin care. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy doing make up and will wear it to events, nights out, on holiday etc.

But I spend far too much money on my face these days to cover it up every day with make up.

The younger generations are wearing less make-up??! You clearly do not live near a UK northern city....😆

OP im with you. I like to not horrify myself in a mirror, so I would wear mascara, concealer and blusher onto the plane, remove and then reapply at the end. I find my skin feels both weirdly greasy and dry on flights if I keep any makeup on and I hate having shine round my nose and chin. I too have very fair skin and it can often look blotchy and red.

@doobaz please don’t worry about that. It’s only me who thinks that and you don’t know me 😂 I know it’s a weird opinion.

I missed this comment before. Christ, how rude. I always wear make up but it’s up to my friends what they do ffs!

@HermioneWeasleywe have six hours to kill in Heathrow before our flight so walking about for that length of time without make up is just not an option. I would love to have the confidence not to wear make up but my skin looks greasy and pale without it as I’m blonde and fair skinned. I look ill without it and it’s depressing looking at myself in the mirror. The only day in my life I didn’t wear make up was the day after I gave birth. I love make up!

Edited

You don’t have to defend yourself or put your looks down - I love make up! For an overnight flight, I’d choose my make up carefully, leave on overnight, then retouch if needed at my destination.

Have a great time 😊

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 08/02/2026 18:38

Agree with others, I wouldn't wear make up at all, it would be terrible for my (already quite bad) skin. Honestly, nobody but you is judging how your face looks without make up. I don't give a shit how I look.

I don't wear make-up and mentioned this to somebody once in conversation as the subject came up. They looked a bit surprised, looked closer at me and said 'oh yes' it was like they'd never noticed and were surprised I didn't have any on.
Thinking back (over decades) this has happened a couple of times so I don't think people even notice.

So that's why there is a long queue at the toilet at 'bedtime' on a aeroplane?

No, you do it in your seat.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 08/02/2026 18:39

Prescriptive used to have a blue facecream called Flight Cream which I was obsessed with for long haul flights. No idea if it made a difference, I just liked the thought of it.

Honestly I think you would agree that makeup does not look good on me if you saw the evidence!
I dye my eyebrows and lashes every few weeks and my skin is olive, so I don't look too pasty or bare

Snackpocket · 08/02/2026 18:41

I don’t wear heavy make up but would wear it to the airport and take it off during the flight for long haul. I also wear contact lenses and usually take them out so end the flight bare faced and in glasses.

If you chose the right formulas its perfectly fine and may actually protect your skin. Even mascaras have conditioning ingredients although I may take mascara off if it was very drying in the cabin so I wanted to use eyedrops.
